Holiday musical

Holy Family School's annual music program can be seen at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8, at Barton Community College's Fine Arts Auditorium. The program features songs from all classes, with the fifth and sixth graders presenting the musical, "Dr. Newheart's Christmas Cure."

City of Larned approves installation of tennis backboards

The Larned City Council met for a brief meeting Monday night. After discussing and approving the monthly appropriations ordinance, Mayor William Nusser noted that the agenda item concerning the discussion of a potential wind energy opportunity for the city would be removed. Council members then heard a report from Junior City Council member Kaylyn Millen, who opened her presentation by quizzing council members and the mayor about county trivia. Then, she shared what she and other junior members had learned earlier that day during their visit to the Pawnee County Courthouse where they met with county commissioners.

Senior Companion Volunteers recognized for their service

Beverly Prescott of Larned and Delores Burgardt of Great Bend were honored for their service and support to frail and disabled adults through the Senior Companion Program at the in-service meeting and holiday luncheon held in November. Prescott has served 13 years as a companion; Burgardt was honored for five years.

USD 428 board meets with attorney

The Great Bend USD 428 Board of Education met behind closed doors for more than two hours Monday evening at the District Education Center. A special meeting was announced Monday morning, set for 7:30 p.m. The board quickly moved into executive session for discussion of personnel.

Veterans rep to visit Great Bend

A Veterans Service representative from the Kansas Commission on Veterans' Affairs will be at the Great Bend from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at the Kansas Works Center, at 1025 Main St., to assist veterans and their families in applying for VA benefits. Vietnam veterans are encouraged to inquire and see if their health condition is linked to agent orange.

RUSSELL COUNTY A dead deer on K-18 caused two vehicles to collide at 5:41 p.m. Sunday on K-18 in Russell County, 3.6 miles east of the U.S. 281/K-18 Junction in Plainville.

GBHS Debate places 1st

The Great Bend High School debate team competed at the a Gusta High School Invitational Debate Tournament on Saturday. All three teams competed in the varsity division. Ashtin Heath and Aaron Miller placed first with a perfect 5-0 win loss record and almost perfect speaker points with only dropping one speaker point through all five rounds of competition. Also competing for the team were second year debaters Lisa Marlow and Geoffrey Pafford and first year debaters Darian Harbaugh and Patrick Heath.
