Barton theater students celebrate year's end

Barton Community College theater students who have been entertaining community members for the last year gathered for a year-end celebration Wednesday afternoon in the Shafer Art Gallery.

Photographer offers advice at gallery reception

Composition, color, print quality and more are all considered when judging a photography exhibit, which was the task placed before seasoned photographer Stan Reimer at the Shafer Art Gallery's opening reception for Exposure Time. Reimer said despite the technical qualities of a photo, the first round of elimination is a little more subjective in nature.

Incredible Years Preschool enrolling for Summer Fun

Brown Mackie students earn credit at Rosewood Ranch

Two Brown Mackie College occupational therapy assistant students spent four days in late April involved with the therapeutic-riding program at Rosewood Ranch. While the ranch has welcomed dozens of visitors to observe its award-winning program over the years, OTA students Kelley Hulteen and Barbara Berg are the first to make it part of their college curriculum by visiting April 23-26.

BCC Field Ops Day stresses realism

More than 100 people were involved in Barton Community College's EMT Field Ops Day on Saturday. Students from the EMS, Medical Assistant, and Criminal Justice programs; instructors, volunteer patients; and local law enforcement and emergency medical service personnel were on hand to create lifelike emergency scenarios designed to put the students' skills to the test and mimic the high stress situations they might encounter in the field.

Exposure Time

The public is invited to take a look at what some of the top photographers in the area are seeing through their lenses, with the Shafer Gallery's new show, "Exposure Time: Juried Photography Exhibition." The gallery, located in the Fine Arts Building at Barton Community College, will host an opening reception for the exhibit from 1-3 p.m. Sunday, May 6.

BCC employees and students raise $1,200 for Family Crisis Center

Barton Community College students and employees donned red high heels to raise funds for the Walk a Mile in Her Shoes fundraiser for the Family Crisis Center in Great Bend last Thursday. The event culminated with a public display of stiletto strutting in the courthouse square.

Guided 'lek' tours offered at wetlands

Just before the sun rises over the vast grasslands each spring, while most people are still snug in their beds, prairie-chickens are busy putting on a show that is critical to their survival. In April, staff from the Kansas Wetlands Education Center will lead guided field trips to watch the birds' mating rituals at Cheyenne Bottoms.

There's still time to sign up for the Kansas Wetlands Education Center's last Turtle Tot Club session by calling 1-877-243-9268 to register by March 23. For preschool-age children, ages 3 to 5, Egg-citement, will be presented 10 to 11 a.m., March 25. From insect to bird eggs, children will explore eggs of all kinds and sizes, participate in an egg experiment and make an egg craft. There is a minimum enrollment of 6 and a maximum of 15 children. Children must be accompanied by an adult caregiver and pre-registration is required.
