Auditions for Barton Community College's fall play, "Almost Maine," by John Cariani, are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Thursday, in BCC's Fine Arts Auditorium.
The public is invited to an Open House by the Lucas Area Chamber of Commerce from 7 to 9 p.m, on Wednesday, to celebrate the Kansans Tell Their Stories Exhibit, currently on display at the Flying Pig Studio & Gallery in downtown Lucas.
With financial support from Golden Belt Community Foundation, Credit Union of America, various donations from many other individuals and organizations, Salvation Army of Barton County has supplied over 400 backpacks to students of Barton County this year. The backpacks were packed with school supplies at Simpson Hall, courtesy of the Meyers Chapel AME Church. Volunteers from the Presbyterian Church packed the backpacks and young men from Morton House assisted in hauling the completed backpacks from Meyers Chapel to the Salvation Army Family store where, on Aug. 11, 12 and 13, the majority of the backpacks were distributed.

Helping Hands Preschool, along with Great Bend-based USD 428, are looking for children to fill a limited number of openings still available in the 4-Year-old At-Risk program for the upcoming school year. This free program is sponsored by a grant from the Kansas State Board of Education. Helping Hands administers this program for children living in the Great Bend school district.

TOPEKA -The Kansas Bar Foundation has set the deadline for Interest on Lawyers' Trust Accounts (IOLTA) 2011 grant applications to October 7. As Mayra Reyes pursued her education in early childhood development, she realized she not only wanted to help children, she wanted to assist their families too. And the best way to do that locally, she learned, was to work at Sunflower Diversified's Early Education Center (EEC).
Prairie Land Food is a program for families to stretch their food dollars. Cost is $29 plus two hours of volunteer time for a box of fresh food worth $35 to $40.
