Excursions offered at biking/walking master plan kickoff

A kickoff presentation is planned for the Barton County Bicycle & Pedestrian Master Plan on Wednesday, Aug. 26, at the Kansas Wetlands Education Center, 592 NE K-156. There will be an open house from 6-6:30 p.m., with the presentation at 6:30 p.m.

Attempted murder, standoff suspect still in Barton County jail

Chris Solida, who was involved in a four-hour standoff with authorities in Great Bend Friday night, remains in the Barton County Jail on a no-bond warrant from the District Court at Woodward, Okla., for attempted murder in the first degree.

BCC Board to choose trustee

There will be a special meeting Tuesday to fill a vacancy on the Barton Community College Board of Trustees. The meeting will start at 4 p.m. in room F-30, on the lower level of the Fine Arts Building. The board will review applications for the position and vote on a recommendation.

NAMI to hold family event

The local chapter of the National Alliance for Mental Illness will hold a bake sale and family-fun day from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, at the north end of Brit Spaugh Park in Great Bend. The event will also include a barbecue meal for $5, dunk tank, snow cones and other activities.

Hostage ordeal ends peacefully

A tense four-and-a-half hour standoff Friday night between an Oklahoma man who was holding his two young children hostage and law enforcement in Great Bend ended without shots being fired and the suspect being taken into custody. The man, Chris Solida, was wanted in Oklahoma for allegedly shooting and wounding his wife, Brandy Solida.

Great Bend City Council to hold budget hearing

The Great Bend City Council will hold a budget hearing at 7 p.m. Monday at the City office, 1209 Williams. The council's regular meeting will follow at 7:30 p.m. The agenda includes an increase in water rates, an update on the old opera house building and the city's 2014 audit.

Commission to hold Monday morning meeting

The Barton County Commission will meet at 9 a.m. Monday at the Barton County Courthouse, 1400 Main in Great Bend. The agenda includes an Abatement of Taxes and Special Assessments for the City of Hoisington, a cooperative effort to fix roads in Claflin, the courthouse chiller and Health Department immunization rates.
