Jeannette Holopirek Fundraiser

A fundraiser will be held for Jeannette Holopirek to help with her medical expenses. A pulled pork dinner will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Saturday, at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Olmitz. Habitat for Humanity hosts volunteer mixer

With construction on its next house under way and an upcoming talent show fundraiser in the works, Habitat for Humanity of Barton County is hosting a mixer event to thank current and prospective volunteers. The event will be held at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25, at the non-profit organization's construction site, 1906 Hubbard in Great Bend.

The 30th Annual Central Kansas Toy Run

The 30th Annual Central Kansas Toy Run will be held on Oct. 15., sponsored by The Men MC/American Legion Riders Post 180. New info in Longoria case shows victim not burned alive

Documents filed by prosecutors in the Adam Longoria case say that scientific evidence was considered in their decision not to seek the death penalty if the defendant is convicted of capital murder. He was bound over for trial on Thursday after a second preliminary hearing, for the Aug. 21, 2010, death of Great Bend teenager Alicia DeBolt.

Longoria makes brief trip to Great Bend hospital

Adam Longoria made a brief visit to Great Bend Regional Hospital late Wednesday. Sheriff Gregg Armstrong said Longoria, who is charged with capital murder in the death of Alicia DeBolt, had blood in one ear when he was taken from the Barton County Jail to the hospital at 514 Cleveland St., around 11:49 p.m. Longoria received treatment and was returned to jail without incident.

Community Concert Features Paul McDermand on Steel Drum and Marimba

Not often does the Golden Belt Community Concert Association feature a steel drum and marimba percussionist in concert. In fact, this month's performer is the first. Scam phone calls reported

On Monday, the Barton County Sheriff's Office received calls from individuals in rural Great Bend and rural Pawnee Rock, both reporting attempted fraud via telephone scams.

County to observe Martin Luther King Day

Barton County Office Buildings will be closed Monday, Jan. 19, for Martin Luther King Day. The Records Division of the Sheriff's Office and the Health Department will also be closed. The Landfill will only be open from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m. that day. Emergency services will be in normal operation.

Soup Sampler Supper is Sunday

All are invited to attend the Soup Sampler Supper, sponsored by the Daughters of Isabella, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 18, at the St. Patrick Parish Center, 4100 Broadway Ave. Several varieties of soup will be available.
