Faith Community Church will host a celebration Saturday, Sept. 28, to kick off the expected 15,000 shoebox gifts that southwest Kansas residents will collect this year for needy children overseas. The event for Operation Christmas Child starts at 9:30 a.m. at the church, located at 293 West Barton County Road, Great Bend.
The Great Bend Recreation Commission will be sponsoring a Fall Middle School Dance from 7-9 p.m. Friday at the Great Bend Activity Center, 2715 18th St. It is for all Great Bend Middle school students.
There will be a fall square dancing organizational/dancing meeting from 7:30-9:30 p.m. Friday at the Great Bend Recreation Center's Burnside Room, 1214 Stone. The class is sponsored by the Hoisington Swinging Stars and the GBRC, and all singles and couples are invited and there is no dress code.
The Great Bend community is invited to spend a special afternoon at this year's Community Music for Mission Concert. The concert will be held in the Presbyterian Church Sanctuary, 24th and Washington, at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 29. Talented musicians from churches in the Great Bend area will be offering musical praise to God through a variety of musical formats, from hand bells and chimes to vocal solo, duet, quartet and choral groups, to piano solos and a brass quintet.
In spring, 2013, the United Way gave presentations to the fifth grade classes at the USD 428 and Holy Family Elementary Schools and asked students to make a poster depicting the United Way and the 21 agencies they serve and how they make a difference in the community.
