That's what made Saturday's coffee hosted by the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce an unexpected treat. All four of Barton County's elected state representatives made time to come and answer questions and share their early insights about the 2017 legislative session.

Kansas Commission on Veterans Affairs visit

The Kansas Commission on Veterans Affairs Office (KCVAO) Mobile Operations will be located at the Great Bend Walmart parking lot on from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday to provide information and free assistance to veterans and family members. Veteran services representatives will help navigate the many resources and benefits available. Such benefits might include service connected disability compensation, improved pension with aid and attendance, death pensions, VA health care options, education benefits, vocational rehabilitation and much more. FHSU Golden Belt Alumni Chapter After Hours

Fort Hays State University Golden Belt Alumni Chapter will host an After Hours event from 6-8 p.m. on Feb. 23, at Playa Azul Mexican Restaurant and Cantina, 4923 10th Street in Great Bend. FHSU Head Football Coach Chris Brown will be in attendance to provide an update on the football team, their past season successes and future goals.

Barton Theatre Department to present Drama Therapy Workshop

Barton Community College's theatre department will host a Drama Workshop seminar with speaker LaVonne Canfield from 1-3 p.m. on Feb. 18, in the Fine Arts Auditorium. Canfield will start her workshop with a brief history and background of Drama Therapy within the Creative Arts Therapy framework. Her session will go on to cover experiential learning activities, examples of Drama Therapy work with the incarcerated, how drama therapy fits into a variety of settings and pathways to becoming an RDT. She will close with an activity on the importance of self-care in the professions which involve helping others.

The Shafer Art Gallery will host an opening reception for the CUNA Mutual RS Art & Science Encounter, "The Geometry of Beauty" by Bradford Hanson-Smith from 6:30-8 p.m. on Friday, in the Shafer Gallery. A CUNA Mutual RS Art & Science Encounters Family Day will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, in the Shafer Gallery. Families are invited to learn how to make art with folding techniques by Hanson-Smith at this free family event.

US-50/US-281 roundabout field survey proceeds in Stafford County

STAFFORD COUNTY – The Kansas Department of Transportation this week began conducting survey work at the US-50/US-281 intersection in Stafford County in preparation for the proposed construction of a roundabout. The survey is designed to gather information necessary for the detailed design of the proposed improvements.
