A colorful program on creating butterfly gardens was given by Becky Dudrey at the March Garden Club meeting in Great Bend. Using the magazine Birds and Blooms as a resource, Dudrey shared photos of the 10 most popular butterfly species, and described the best plants to attract butterflies.

It's been a long winter but spring is upon us even though it seems fleeting. At Cheyenne Bottoms, waterfowl have been coming and going since mid-February, a few early shorebirds have arrived and some of the perennial plants are sending out tentative shoots.

The Kory Brunson Band presented a concert to benefit Kans for Kids Fighting Cancer Foundation on Friday evening, March 7 at the Crest Theater. Brunson, a native of Great Bend now living in Thornton, Colo., made the trip home to donate his time and talent to the local organization that provides assistance to families in Barton County living with cancer.
At about 4:30 p.m. Thursday afternoon, a three vehicle accident occurred on Hwy 96 between Great Bend and Ellinwood. Barton County Sheriff and the Kansas Highway Patrol were both on the scene. An eastbound truck towing a horse trailer lost two tires which collided with an eastbound van and a westbound SUV. The windshield of the van and the grill of the SUV were smashed. It is unknown at this time if there were any injuries. The roadway was closed down for about 10 minutes. More details to come.
The Kansas Department of Agriculture's Division of Animal Health is reporting an increased number of rabies cases in Kansas this year, but the disease has yet to show up in Barton County, Barton County Extension Agent Alicia Boor said.
Gerald Kenyon joined the United States Air Force out of highschool, and in 1964, he completed training as a weapons mechanic at Lowry Air Force Base in Colorado. The Independence Day holiday travel period is officially underway, with more than 35.5 million travelers expected on the road through Sunday, July 5. The Barton County Historical Society will be closed Saturday for Independence Day. Regular hours are Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. The Barton County Museum and Village is located just south of the Arkansas River Bridge in Great Bend on U.S. 281.
