Ellinwood Rotary putting a colorful twist on community event

The Ellinwood Rotary Club will change up a favorite June Jaunt activity this year. For the past couple of years they organized a Color Run, but after the initial year, attendance waned. What was missing, they believed, was a sense of competition that would get teams revved up to take part.

Variety Show opens Friday

The Great Bend High School Music Department will host the Variety Show Friday and Saturday in the GBHS Auditorium. Tickets may still be purchased, said Vocal Director Susan Stambaugh. There is no Sunday performance this year.

UWCK Literacy Kits

Throughout 2015, numerous businesses, organizations, and individuals took time out their busy schedules to help the United Way of Central Kansas prepare 400 Literacy Kits to be distributed at Kindergarten Round-Ups in Great Bend, Ellinwood, Larned, and Otis-Bison. On May 6, the last of those Literacy Kits will be given out to enrolling Kindergarteners at Holy Family Elementary School.

Celebrating 250 Years of Volga German Heritage

PORTLAND, Oregon - Responding the 1763 invitation of Catherine the Great for Western Europeans to move to the Russian Empire, more than 30,000 immigrants (mostly Germans) made the trek to the Russian Steppe between 1764 and 1772. Of significance to those whose descendants settled the western Kansas prairie 110 years later, nine Roman Catholic colonies were founded along the Volga River in 1766: Degott (July 18), Graf (June 10), Herzog (July 14), Katharinenstadt (June 27), Louis (June 14), Mariental (June 16), Rohleder (June 14), Schuck (July 18), and Volmer (July 18).
