Operation Dry Water Nets Two Arrests KDWPT game wardens enforce boating under the influence laws

Over the weekend, game wardens with the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism (KDWPT) participated in Operation Dry Water, a national effort to reduce the number of accidents and deaths related to boating under the influence (BUI). The three-day enforcement effort was conducted from 12 a.m. June 27, to 11:59 p.m. June 29. In addition to enforcing wildlife laws and regulations, game wardens are responsible for patrolling the waters of Kansas, conducting boat accident investigations, boat safety inspections, BUI checks, safety programs, education classes and other boating related activities. Zoo news: Jack Hanna tickets sold out

Tickets for the Barton County appearance of Jack Hanna sold out during the Nex-Tech Zoo Fest in June. Tickets for the October show were offered to the general public for the first time during the event, said Scott Gregory, director of Great Bend's Brit Spaugh Zoo.

Altered Books’ workshop

Altered Books' workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, July 5, at the Grassroots Art Center in Lucas. The instructor is LuAnne Howell, an artist from Lincoln. Reuse and upcycle is the basis of much of LuAnne's artwork. Painting, stitchery, and altering books are only a few of her talents. An old unwanted book, can suddenly become a treasure box, capturing ones own mementos.

Commission to hold Monday morning meeting

The Barton County Commission will meet at 9 a.m. Monday at the Barton County Courthouse, 1400 Main in Great Bend. The agenda includes a rezoning request for property between Great Bend and Ellinwood, the recognition of retiring Chief Deputy County Clerk Marcia Sauber, a recycling grant and the purchase of assorted equipment for Central Kansas Community Corrections.

In the June 24 story on the Barton County Commission, the cost of the fence at the new radio tower east of Great Bend was incorrectly reported. The cost of the work, being done by Little Giant Fabrication of Great Bend is $2, 992.18, not $9,992.18. The Tribune apologizes for the error.

Local toddler qualifies for national pageant competition

Twenty month old Anniyah Hurd-Harders won Supreme Baby titles at the 2014 Kansas State Our Miss Diamond pageant, qualifying her to represent Kansas on the national level. Anniyah competed in McPherson over the weekend with other state preliminary winners in the 13-24 month old age category to capture the Overall World of Babies Supreme and the Supreme Sweepstakes awards. She qualified for the state pageant after winning the Supreme titles in a preliminary contest held in Great Bend last year.

Golden Belt Community Foundation accepting grant applications

The Golden Belt Community Foundation invites proposals for its upcoming competitive grant cycle. Applications now are being accepted from qualified 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations and public institutions, including schools, government entities, and clubs and civic/community organizations in Barton, Pawnee, Rush, and Stafford counties. Funds are available primarily for the health and well-being of youth; however, limited funds are available in many other categories.

Showers, thunderstorms may develop Wednesday night

Severe storms with ping pong ball sized hail and damaging winds are expected over parts of central Kansas roughly along and west of Highway 14 late Wednesday evening. Barton County has a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms Wednesday evening.
