HUTCHINSON – While visiting the Kansas State Fair on Sunday, Keith and Tammy Bell of Great Bend stopped by the Kansas Lottery Building to try their luck at winning a "muscle car" in a second-chance drawing. Although they didn't win the car, they did walk away with a $5,000 cash prize playing a $5 Muscle Car Money instant scratch ticket.

TOPEKA - The Kansas Department of Health and Environment along with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend consumers and especially persons at high risk for listeriosis to not eat cantaloupes marketed from Jensen Farms in the Rocky Ford region of Colorado due to a potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium that can cause serious illness.

A community "Music for Mission" Concert will be held in the First Presbyterian Church sanctuary, 24th and Washington, on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 2:30 p.m. A variety of instrumental and vocal musical groups representing a diverse makeup of churches located in Great Bend will join together for an afternoon of musical praise to God, said Carol Woodmansee of the Presbyterian Church Mission Committee.

Friends of the Great Bend Public Library will be holding their annual Used Book Sale the third week in October. Donations of books to the sale from the public will be accepted until Friday, Sept. 30. The library is located at 1409 Williams in Great Bend. Donated books can be brought to the library's service entrance off Stone Street or to the circulation desk.

Chicago's legendary comedy theater, "The Second City," will appear at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 5, at the Beach/Schmidt Performing Arts Center. The performance, sponsored by Fort Hays State University's University Activities Board, will feature some of the best sketches, songs and improvisations from Second City's 45-plus year history.

Monday, Sept. 12, the TLC Discoveries kids made posters for the two fire stations thanking them for all they do and being our hometown Hero's. This idea came from Lexie Brack after watching all of the 9/11 shows on TV on Sunday. She wanted to do something for our firemen to thank them. So the kids all signed the posters and she took a car load to deliver them. They had a good time talking to the men and thanking them.

U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-KS) announced today that he is accepting applications for nominations to the United States Service Academies. The academies include the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y.; the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.; the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.; and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y. Those selected will enter the academies in June 2012.

The Barton County Health Department will begin doing seasonal flu shots daily starting on Monday, Sept. 19, during regular clinic hours for anyone age 6 months and older. No appointment is necessary. Persons under age 18 must be accompanied by a parent/legal guardian, no physician's order needed. Pregnant women may receive the traditional inactivated influenza vaccine. Cost for influenza vaccine shots will be $24 or Medicare/Medicaid Card or Insurance assignment. Intradermal flu shots will also be available at the health department for people 18 to 64 years of age at $24.
