Bill jeopardizes vital road projects and jobs

A bill pending in the Kansas Legislature would cripple the state's highway maintenance program, cause a loss of jobs and severely impact Great Bend and surrounding area, Great Bend City Administrator Howard Partington told the City Council Monday night.

Vital volunteers recognized

To spotlight the impact of national service and thank those who serve, mayors and country officials participated in the fourth-annual Mayor and County Recognition Day for National Service on Tuesday. Barton County's involvement included a proclamation from the county commission on Monday to recognize the special day, and a tour of the Food Bank of Barton County on Tuesday.

Barton County general elections

A provisional ballot cast in Great Bend's Third Ward could change the outcome of one city council race. Unofficial results Tuesday showed Cory Zimmerman winning the seat with 16 votes, while Doug Keiswetter had 15 and needed one to tie. Thomas Boor was a close third with 12 votes. All three were write-in candidates.

Damon Family Foundation donates to vets memorial

A grateful Barton County commission Monday morning accepted a donation of $500 from the Damon Family Foundation to the Golden Belt Veterans Memorial. The funds are to be used to assist veterans who do not have the financial resources to pay for engravings on the Memorial, located in Golden Belt Memorial Park.

Commission to canvass votes

The County Commission will meet as the Board of County Canvassers 8:30 a.m. Monday, April 11, at in the Office of the County Clerk. At that time, they will canvass ballots from Tuesday's city general election for Ellinwood, Great Bend and Hoisington and the Ellinwood District Hospital Board of Trustees.
