'Rounding Third' ... and coming home

GB woman among Yellow Brick Road winners

TOPEKA – At a news conference Wednesday in Topeka, Richard Smalley, marketing manager of the Kansas Department of Commerce, Travel and Tourism Division, announced the winners of the Yellow Brick Road Trip Sweepstakes. Carolyn Aviles of Colwich, Richard Castleberry of Inman, Amie Linenberger of Great Bend, and Charles Mohney of Meriden won prize packages from Coleman, Bushnell, the Kansas Bed and Breakfast Association, BikeSource, AAA Allied Group and Dillons.

The Great Bend Recreation Commission will again offer a contest to see who can bring in the longest tail feather from a pheasant once the hunting season starts Saturday. Program coordinator Garet Fitzpatrick announced the contest Monday during the GBRC Board of Directors meeting.

First Kansas African-American female mayor to speak in Great Bend

Kim Thomas, the first African-American woman to serve as a mayor in the state of Kansas, will speak at the Great Bend NAACP chapter Freedom Fund Banquet at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 13, at the Great Bend Senior Center, 2005 Kansas Avenue in Great bend. In addition to Thomas' speech, there will be entertainment and a dinner for a donation of $20.

GBHS KAYs, KAYETTEs earn state awards

McPHERSON – Nine members of the Great Bend High School KAYs and 15 KAYETTEs attended the Area 6 KAY Regional Conference on Friday, Nov. 5, at McPherson High School. The clubs returned with the highest state award possible. The Kays and Kayettes each received the Gold Award, recognizing their student leadership and service to their school, community, nation and world for the 2009-2010 school year.
