Suchy retires as public works director

With regrets, the Great Bend City Council Monday night reluctantly approved the retirement of long-time Public Works Director Charlie Suchy. In a letter to the council, he made his intentions known to leave the city after over 30 years effective Friday.

Still ‘Rolling out the Barrel’

A rollicking good time was had by members of the Sunflower Polka Club Sunday, June 3, at the Great Bend Columbus Club. Around 150 people attended the dance marking the 31-year anniversary of the club, according to Wayne "Buzz" Banks and his wife, Betty Banks, Great Bend.

The theme for this year's Relay for Life of Barton County is "Super Heros Wanted." The Barton County Commission Monday morning answered the call as it approved a proclamation honoring the relay for Life which takes place Friday.

ELLSWORTH - A Great Bend woman died following a two-vehicle crash 1 mile north of Ellsworth at 2:17 p.m. Saturday. Five others were injured.

Crowd gathers at new grizzly bear exhibit

The grand opening for the expanded grizzly bear exhibit at the Great Bend Brit Spaugh Zoo drew hundreds of visitors. The line outside the zoo Saturday morning stretched to the pool parking lot as people waited for the doors to open. Some of them check out the Little Free Library in front of the zoo and picked up a free book while they waited.

Summer Library Program kicks off with luau

Great Bend Public Library's Summer Reading Program got underway Friday with a Community Luau on the front lawn. The staff served hot dogs and handed out leis while children played in a large pile of sand to make "tiki crafts."

Kicks on K-96

The K-96 June Jaunt got underway Friday in Great Bend and continued with activities and entertainment throughout the weekend. The fun continues Sunday with fishing at Veterans Memorial Lake and a Hap Dumont baseball tournament at the Sports Complex. Up to 50 teams are scheduled to vie for points in their division.

BCC Theatre to holds auditions for summer acts

The Barton Community College Theatre Department will hold open auditions for its summer production of the comedy one-acts "The Proposal" and "The Bear" by Anton Chekhov from 4-6 p.m. June 12 and 13 in the Fine Arts Auditorium. The Theatre Department is looking to cast four males and four females who are 25-60 years old. Those who wish to audition may show up during the allotted hours on either night. No preparation or experience is necessary.

Larned trail named national recreational trail

LARNED - Continuing the expansion of recreational opportunities on public lands, U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke Thursday designated 19 National Recreation trails in 17 states, including one at Fort Larned National Historic Site. The action added more than 370 miles to the national recreation trails system of more than 1,000 trails in all 50 states.
