Committee named to find administrator

A search committee consisting of current city officials and new Great Bend governing body members was selected to complete interviews for a permanent city administrator. This person will take over for George Kolb who was hired as interim administrator last September in the wake of long-time City Administrator Howard Partington's August retirement.

Commission renames Hipp county counselor

Carey Hipp will serve another year as the Barton County counselor, the County Commission decided Tuesday morning. The item had been on the commission's agenda last week but was tabled since Commissioner Alicia Straub was absent and commissioners thought it best to have all five members present for the vote.

Chamber Coffee

This week's Chamber of Commerce Coffee will be hosted by Habitat for Humanity: Barton County Area, at the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce Spray-Holt Family Board Room, 1125 Williams Street, at 9:30 a.m., Thursday. Hoisington EMS granted $25,000 for new equipment

HOISINGTON - Hoisington's EMS Director Scot Fleming learned earlier in December his department had been picked to receive a grant from Firehouse Subs of Wichita. The grant made it possible to purchase two ROSC-U mechanical CPR devices, one for each ambulance. The state-of-the-art equipment provides high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for hours. He and EMT volunteers Megan Elmore, Garrett Tindall, and Andrea Aguilera demonstrated one of the new units Thursday morning when the department hosted Chamber Coffee at their new living and training quarters.

400th Quilt of Valor Awarded

Golden Plains Quilts of Valor Group Leader Amy Schartz Mellor and members awarded eight Quilts of Valor on December 29, 2017, at the American Legion Post 180 in Great Bend. Golden Plains Quilts of Valor's 400th quilt was awarded to Larry Wood. To date, the group has awarded a total of 402 quilts to area veterans.

The top story of 2017 for Great Bend began when Police Chief Cliff Couch's dispute with City Administrator Howard Partington became public, followed by the City Council's suspension of the chief, and everything that was set in motion as a result. The "Stand With Chief Couch" movement included a Facebook page, blue support signs posted in front of homes throughout the city and hundreds of people attending city council meetings as the story unfolded.

Adopt-A-Pet fundraiser on Jan. 6

Golden Belt Humane Society/Adopt a Pet will be held on Saturday, Jan. 6, at Orscheln's, 5320 10th St., Great Bend, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Volunteers will be serving chili with crackers, Wheatland Café cinnamon rolls and a bottle of water for a $6 donation. Animals available for adoption will be inside.
