BCC seeks to lower textbook costs

Barton Community College educators hope to lower the cost of textbooks in the future by using more materials that can be found in the public domain and elsewhere for little or no cost. The group working on a project for Open Educational Resources (OER) gave a report Tuesday and the BCC Board of Trustees study session.

Commission marks National Bike Month

The bicycle is an "economical, healthy, convenient, and environmentally sound form of transportation and an excellent tool for recreation and enjoyment of Barton County's scenic beauty," the Barton Count Commission noted Monday morning. To this end, it approved a proclamation marking May as National Bike Month.

Community Theatre wins over $10K from 100 Who Care

Great Bend Community Theater is the latest recipient of more than $10,000 in donations from the members of the 100+ People Who Care group in Barton County. Following a humorous presentation from theater members Dan Heath and Matt Mazouch, members of the group selected GBCT out of the three charitable organizations who presented for the quarter on May 1.

Child kidnapping/drowning hoax reported

Sheriff Brian Bellendir said a report of a child kidnapping or drowning at the Big Bend Recreational Lake on Sunday was evidently a hoax. The woman who allegedly called 911 was arrested on an obstruction charge.

A motorist who allegedly refused to stop for a Barton County Sheriff's Office deputy early Sunday was arrested after a pursuit on county roads, Sheriff Brian Bellendir said.

Commission votes to improve accident-prone two-way stop

In light of a recent fatality crash at the intersection of North Washington Avenue and North 30 Road, the Barton County Commission approved taking steps to improve the existing two-way stop while looking at additional improvements down the road. Approved changes included better signage and white lines denoting where to stop.

Quivira to offer Migratory Bird Day activities, May 12

Quivira National Wildlife Refuge will host a special event in honor of International Migratory Bird Day on Saturday, May 12. The event will feature a series of scheduled bird walks and guided birding caravan tours. These tours will begin from Quivira's Environmental Education Classroom, located in the center of the Refuge, 8 miles north of the Visitor Center.
