One arrested for animal cruelty

On July 26, 2018 the Barton County Sheriff's Office assisted the Golden Belt Humane Society and the Barton County Health Department in the execution of a search warrant. The two organizations had been investigating a case of animal cruelty and maintaining a public nuisance.

WIC program a go

TOPEKA – The federal Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program, administered by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment serves 30,800 families across the state. Historically, food available through the program could only be acquired at grocery stores utilizing paper checks. However, the federal government now requires states to issue an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card to recipients to purchase food benefits.

Kansas jobless rate stays steady

TOPEKA - According to preliminary estimates reported by the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) and Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 3.4 percent in June. This was unchanged from May and down from 3.6 percent in June 2017.

Great Bend City Council candidates share views at LWV forum

Editor's note: On Tuesday, July 24, the Great Bend chapter of the League of Women Voters Candidates Forum was held, and on Wednesday, July 25, the Great Bend Tribune reported on the first half of the forum at which candidates for U.S. House of Representatives candidates Alan LaPolice (D) and Nick Renecker (R) and Barton County Commission District 4 candidates Alicia Straub and Randy Suchy participated. Lawmakers respond to ag aid package

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The United States Department of Agriculture Tuesday announced it would authorize $12 billion in programs to aid farmers harmed by retaliatory trade actions from nations angered by recently imposed U.S. trade tariffs. These programs would provide relief to many Kansas producers who have been hurt the most, with pork, wheat, corn, soybeans and sorghum on the program's list.

LWV host forum featuring 11 candidates

In anticipation of the 2018 Primary Election coming up on Tuesday, Aug. 7, the League of Women Voters of Great Bend hosted a forum for political candidates Tuesday night, at the Great Bend High School Auditorium. Rosewood tax credit request tabled again

The Barton County Commission once again tabled voting on a letter of support backing Rosewood Services' application for the Kansas Department Of Commerce Community Service Tax Credit Program. This marked the second time commissioners delayed acting on the matter as they seek more information on Rosewood's plans for the former E&E Glass building at 1117 Williams St.

After Harvest Parade

ELLINWOOD - The 45th annual Ellinwood After Harvest Festival concluded Saturday with revelers dancing into the night. The hour-long AHF Parade featured approximately 80 entries, including reunion floats, antique and classic vehicles, local residents and visiting politicians. This year's theme was "Celebrating People, Petroleum & Progress."
