Valentine Party set for Tuesday

Larned WWII Marine finally accounted for

LARNED - On Thursday, Feb. 1, the Department of Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency announced a World War II Marine from Larned had finally been accounted for. Believed killed on Nov. 20, 1943, Krieger was the first casualty of WWII from Larned. Within moments, social media lit up with comments of hope to the family and expressions of gratitude to the soldier thanking him for his service and his ultimate sacrifice.

Hike and bike trail will be closed for repairs

The City of Great Bend announced Thursday the temporary closure of a section of the Great Bend hike and bike trail. The section of trail between Washington and 10th Street on top of the flood control levy will be closed for repairs from Monday, Feb. 5, to Monday, Feb. 19.

BCHS Museum welcomes spring with farming exhibit

A new exhibit at the Barton County Historical Society Museum, "Agricultural Options on the Central Kansas Plains," is on loan from the Coronado Quivira Museum of Lyons. Museum staff spent the first part of this week uncrating and installing the numerous panels in the exhibit hall and the library.

New look, new feel

The Dillons store on 10th Street in Great Bend celebrated its grand re-opening on Wednesday to showcase a new look and feel of the store along with the celebration of a new Starbucks Coffee Shop inside the store. The celebration included a ribbon cutting, presentation of $16,500 in donations and an ribbon cutting for the $3 million renovation.

Happy Birthday, Kansas! winners receive prizes at Capitol building

TOPEKA - Winners of the Happy Birthday, Kansas! Student Photo Contest received prizes last Friday at the celebration of Kansas Day at the Kansas State Capitol. Governor Sam Brownback congratulated students as Marearl Denning, representing the legislative spouses, presented an iPad to first-place winners and a Kindle to second-place winners. The contest, now in its fourth year, is presented in conjunction with the Kansas Historical Society.
