Life jackets, supervision essential to boating safety

TOPEKA - Whether it's during vacation or part of an ordinary summer day, boating can be fun for the entire family – as long as everyone remains safe. The U.S. Coast Guard reports an estimated 85 percent of boating-related drowning could be prevented by the use of life jackets. Nationally, of the children who drowned while boating in 2003, more than 60 percent were not wearing life jackets.

​Habitat for Humanity celebrates project completion with community barbecue

Drywall, check. Light fixtures, check. Carpeting, check. The final touches are being put on the house being constructed at 1906 Hubbard. After many months, thousands of volunteer hours, and countless supporters in the Barton County area, Habitat for Humanity of Barton County announced that its fifth home is complete The non-profit organization will celebrate the project's completion with a community barbecue at 5 p.m. on Sunday, June 24.

Zoo News: Tuesday is Inspection Day

"June 12th could possibly be the most important day in zoo history!!" Brit Spaugh Zoo Director Scott Gregory said. He was speaking of the Great Bend zoo's history. Tuesday is the day the zoo will be inspected by staff from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums for possible accreditation.

Civil War author to visit historical society

No other state's history is so entwined with the American Civil War as that of the Sunflower State, says historian Debra Goodrich Bisel. She will visit the Barton County Historical Society to present a lecture and book signing from 1-3 p.m. Friday in the main museum, located just south of the Arkansas River Bridge in Great Bend on U.S. 281. Admission to the program is free.
