County tax sale Tuesday

The annual Barton County Tax Sale will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday in the Conference Room of the Barton County Courthouse, 1400 Main St. in Great Bend. Commissioner Kenny Schremmer will conduct the auction. Parcels can be viewed on-line at www.bartoncounty.org.

Commission alarmed by domestic violence stats

On Oct. 20, Family Crisis Center Executive Director Rachel Angel wants Barton County residents to "paint the town purple" in an effort to draw attention to domestic violence, which is as serious of a problem locally as it is elsewhere in the state and nation.

Quilts of Valor

Eleven area veterans were awarded quilts from the Golden Plains Quilts of Valor group on Friday, Sept. 30, at the Argonne American Legion Post 180 in Great Bend. Amy Schartz Mellor did the quilting, and the quilt tops were made by members of the volunteer organization.

GBCCA Brings Blackwood Brothers Quartet to Stage for Next Concert

The Blackwood Brothers Quartet, lauded as the best-known name in gospel quartet history, will perform for the Golden Belt Community Concert Association at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, at the Great Bend Municipal Auditorium, Lakin and Stone.

County probe topic of contentious executive session

Commissioner Alicia Straub's asking for a 10-minute closed-door commission meeting Monday morning sparked a heated exchange after fellow commissioners felt blind-sided by the request. Straub sought the executive session as an addition to the agenda to continue discussions around an investigation involving non-elected county personnel.

Grief Support Group meetings start Monday

The Golden Belt Home Health & Hospice Grief Support Group is starting a new series of sessions this month. The group will meet from 6:30-8 p.m. at the St. Rose Health Center, 3515 Broadway Ave., on the following Mondays: Oct. 10, 17 and 24; Nov. 7, 21 and 28; and Dec. 5. American Legion Auxiliary soup supper

American Legion Auxiliary will hold an all you can eat Benefit Soup Supper on from 5 to 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 10, at the American Legion Argonne Post 180, 1011 Kansas in Great Bend. Members and guests are welcome. Tickets are $7. Chili, ham and beans, vegetable beef, chicken and noodle soups, cornbread, tea, water, coffee and dessert made by the American Legion Auxiliary members will be served. Proceeds will benefit the Golden Plains Quilts of Valor to help with the cost of making quilts for veterans.
