Board of Education meeting

USD 428 Board of Education will meet at 5 p.m. on Monday at the District Education Office, 201 S. Patton Road. Items on the agenda include, review of 2013-2014 budget, approval of BOE policies, approval of local consolidated plan allocations, approval of mill levy for Great Bend Recreation Commission, proposed BOE retreat, 5 R's for accreditation, college and career ready standards, professional development, assessments update, curriculum adoption schedule, approval to accept grant application/awards, licensed position changes for 2013-2014, project updates at GBMS and parking lot at Great Bend High School, and student transfer request report

Golden Belt Run for Life is Sept. 28

The Suicide Prevention Task Force of the Central Kansas Partnership is holding the "Golden Belt Run for Life" with a family and friends survivors' ceremony on Saturday, Sept. 28, at Barton Community College. September is Suicide Prevention month and the local coalition wanted to promote Suicide Prevention in our community and hold an event that would help provide for needed community education.

All About Connections

Barton Community College will host an opening reception for the "Lineage" exhibit on Friday, August 16 from 6-8 p.m., which will showcase the impact art instructors have had on two emerging ceramic artists. Artwork from all of their past educators will be on display to illustrate the lineage, which will include a featured installation by Fort Hays State University Art Professor Linda Ganstrom. Music, refreshments and gallery talks will be provided. The show will run through August 30.

Demel, RN, leads newly re-organized medical program at Sunflower Diversified

Brandi Demel has been a registered nurse for 13 years but in her position at Sunflower Diversified Services she is seeing the rewards of offering care and treatment in a new type of environment. Demel is the new full-time nurse at the non-profit agency.

Softball tourney raises $2,500 for local Special Olympics team

This year's Storm Co-Ed Benefit Softball Tournament, played Aug. 3 at Veteran's Fields in Great Bend, is in the books but the tourney certainly wasn't played by the book. Heavy and intermittent rain along with muddy field conditions prompted tournament organizers to delay play, shuffle schedules and, in the end, flip coins in order to complete the fifth-annual event.

Crime Stoppers offers reward after shot taken at officer

Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information about the person who shot at a Kansas Highway Patrol officer in his patrol car last month. At 12:56 a.m. on July 28, the trooper was driving east in the 1400 block of 10th St. in Great Bend when he heard a gunshot and the rear window glass shattered.

Shafer Gallery calling for 'Choreography of Cranes' entries

The Shafer Art Gallery at Barton Community College is calling for entries for its national juried art exhibit "Choreography of Cranes." The deadline to submit work is Sept. 1. The exhibit is a collaborative effort between the Shafer Gallery and the Kansas Wetlands Education Center to raise awareness of the precarious plight of the endangered whooping cranes and the daunting task of conserving their habitat.

Sheriff issues advance warning of selective enforcement

On Wednesday, Aug. 14, the Barton County Sheriff's Office will conduct selective enforcement from 7-9 a.m. on West Barton County Road. (10th Street Extension) between the Great Bend city limits and SW 70 Ave. Sheriff Brian Bellendir said officers will be paying particular attention to speed violations and occupant restraint usage.

Tim Miller named Old Bill Honoree at 35th annual Barton Foundation Auction; tickets now available

It doesn't take long before new Great Bend area residents hear the name "Tim Miller." Miller (1940-2012) was one of the area's greatest businessmen and philanthropists, and his large company Tim Miller Enterprises was honored with the 2011 Business of the Year Award by the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce.

Disc golf tourney to take place Aug. 17

The inaugural Windy Hill Disc Golf Tournament is set for Saturday, Aug. 17, at Barton Community College as a fundraiser to benefit Relay for Life of Barton County. Registration opens at 8:30 a.m. and tee-off is at 9 a.m. for the 18-hole tourney. Entry fee is $10 per person and hole sponsorships are available for $50.

Great Bend will host an Alzheimer's Walk on Saturday, Oct. 5, with registration to begin at 1 p.m. followed by the opening ceremony at Barton County Courthouse and Jack Kilby Square.
