Kyle Vierra, sixth-grade teacher at Park School, and Lori Tennis, Great Bend Middle School math teacher, have been nominated by their principals for the Horizon Award, a state award for outstanding new teachers. The program recognizes exemplary first-year teachers who perform in a way that distinguishes them as outstanding.

Barton Community College Young Democrats Club will hold a presidential debate watch party at 8 p.m. Monday in the college Library's Cavanaugh Room. Those who attend are asked to bring a can of food to donate to the Food Bank, and a snack to share.
Great Bend elementary students received copies of the children's novel "The One and Only Ivan" on Friday. These books are theirs to take home and keep, and to read with a family member as part of this year's One District One Book community literacy program.
The Barton County Commission will meet at 9 a.m. Monday at the Barton County Courthouse, 1400 Main in Great Bend. The agenda includes the acceptance of an insurance dividend check, an executive session to discuss non-elected personnel and the buy back of a loader for the Road and Bridge Department.
