Credit card scams fail

A rural Barton County man contacted the Barton County Sheriff's Office on Saturday to report an attempted fraud. He said he received a text that his Visa account had been "locked." He was given a number to call and was asked for secure information, which he did not provide. He also called his financial institution and was told nothing was wrong with his card.

Barton County 4-H junior leaders taking orders for peaches

Barton County 4-H Junior Leaders will have 18-19-pound boxes of Colorado peaches available for $30 on Aug. 16. ​Four area teens injured in rollover

ELLIS - Four teenagers from central Kansas were injured Tuesday morning in a one-car accident on Interstate 70 in Ellis County, about half a mile west of Ellis. Kansas Highway patrol reports the driver, 18-year-old Kasey D. Wagner, Great Bend, fell asleep at 7:55 a.m. at the 1999 Cadillac DeVille was eastbound on I-70. The car entered the south ditch, hit a tree and rolled, coming to rest on its top.

Crime Stoppers seeks information on stolen truck

Crime Stoppers of Barton County and Great Bend is seeking information on a truck stolen last week from Aaron's Repair & Supply Inc., 170 SW 40 Ave. Sheriff Brian Bellendir, speaking for Crime Stoppers, said the black, 2001 Dodge Durango 4 x 4 bearing Kansas tag 521 AQI was stolen between 5 p.m. on Monday, July 28 and 7 a.m. on July 29.

Suspect arrested after pursuit

A police pursuit that began shortly before 2:30 Sunday a.m. near 24th and Odell St. in Great Bend ended a short time later near 29th and Quivira Ave. Suspect Joshua Smith from Hays allegedly fled on foot but was later found and arrested, according to Lt. Williams Browne at the Great Bend Police Department.

Shots fired in Great Bend

At 11 p.m. Sunday, the Great Bend Police Department received multiple reports from people who heard shots fired in the area of Sixth and Odell St. Two men and a woman were contacted in the front yard of 521 Odell St., and a case was taken. No one was arrested.

Fatal collision in Barton County

An Ellsworth woman died when the vehicle she was driving collided with another vehicle on K-156, 14 miles northeast of Great Bend at 4:19 p.m. on Tuesday. A 2000 Mazda protege driven by Teresa Mehl, age 45, was travelling east on K-156 and crossed into the westbound lane, colliding with a 2012 GMC Sierra 2500 driven by Andrew Kirkpatrick, 31, from Ellinwood.
