Chamber Coffee

This week's Chamber of Commerce Coffee will be hosted by 2B Organized at the Great Bend Chamber, Spray Holt Family Board Room, 1125 Williams, at 9:30 a.m., Thursday. Commission ratifies fridge purchase

It was a desperate situation for the Barton County Health Department, Health Director Shelly Schneider told the County Commission Monday morning. One of the two pharmaceutical-grade refrigerators the department uses to keep vaccines and other medications at critically cool temperatures went out earlier this month.

Title IX report on BCC agenda

The Barton Community College Board of Trustees will hear a Title IX status report at the next meeting, set for 4 p.m. Tuesday, Feb 28, in room F-30, on the lower level of the Fine Arts Building. The board will also consider a recommendation to purchase a used bus from Riley's Bus Tours/MCI.

School board to meet twice

A special USD 428 Board of Education meeting has been scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27, at the District Education Center, 201 S. Patton Road. The monthly board luncheon meeting will be held at noon Tuesday, Feb. 28, at Park Elementary School, 1801 Williams St.

School board mulls long-range plans

The Great Bend USD 428 board of education continues to work on long-range planning and has compiled a list of possible projects, including safe rooms, more parking spaces, and playground equipment. A planning session has been scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 27, at the District Education Center, 201 S. Patton Road.

Ag science instructor hopes to grow program

If Great Bend High School agriculture instructor Kevin Hoff had his wishes granted, the GBHS shop building would be bigger and the school would start a small farm in the neighborhood. Until that happens, he is working to strengthen community partnerships in his first year as at GBHS.

Commission to hold Monday morning meeting

The Barton County Commission will meet at 9 a.m. Monday at the Barton County Courthouse, 1400 Main in Great Bend. The agenda includes an agreement for a geology study for the proposed bridge on East Barton County Road, the purchase of a bush cutter and forklift for the Road and Bridge Department, and the purchase of a refrigerator for the Health Department.

Health advisory, safety tips issued during Flint Hills burning season

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) reminds Kansans that March and April are a time when large areas of the state's Flint Hills rangeland are burned. These burns help preserve the tallgrass prairie, control invasive species such as Eastern Red Cedar and Sumac and provide better forage for cattle. Prescribed burning minimizes risk of wildfires and is effective in managing rangeland resources. Smoke from the burns can influence the air quality of downwind areas. The use of smoke management techniques is vital to reduce impacts.

KWEC’s Turtle Tot Club starts in March

Turtle Tot Club, a series of nature-based programs developed for preschool-age children, ages 3 to 5, is scheduled for March at the Kansas Wetlands Education Center. The one-hour programs, offered at no charge, introduce young children to the natural world around them with sensory experiences, while reinforcing colors, shapes, math and fine motor skills. When possible, sessions include outdoor time. Programs run from 10-11 a.m. There is a minimum enrollment of 6 and a maximum of 12 children. Gas prices see little movement

The Kansas gas price average has seen little movement recently, holding steady at $2.17, the American Automobile Association reported this week. Locally, the Great Bend Price has held a tick above that average at $2.19 for several weeks as well.
