Barton County eligible for public assistance from FEMA

On Oct. 22, Barton County was declared eligible for Public Assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) due to severe storms and flooding that occurred throughout Kansas from July 22 through August 16. An Applicants' Briefing for township officials, cities, county, school districts and certain non-profit organizations within Barton County has been scheduled for 9 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 15 at the Barton County Courthouse, Room 101, Great Bend. This meeting is for public officials and officers from these agencies and organizations, and elected officials from these entities may be in attendance.

Sterling High School stages classic musical

A stage full of assorted gamblers, gangsters, chorus girls and missionaries can only mean one thing: the classic Broadway musical "Guys and Dolls" is coming to town. Sterling High School Theatre will present the Frank Loesser masterpiece at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, November 14, 15, and 16, in the school's Theatre.

Great Bend Fire Department firefighters and friends serve spaghetti, Thursday night at their Ninth Annual Spaghetti feed. There was also a drawing for prizes. The line waiting to be served sometimes stretched outside the Knights of Columbus Hall and down the block.

GBHS Debate team wins trophy

On Nov. 2 the Great Bend High School Debate Squad competed at Salina-Sacred Heart's Debate tournament. Four teams competed in two divisions. In the novice division, Trae Black and Malia Clark placed 3rd. In the varsity division, Marissa Hoisington and Kameko Schultz placed 3rd. The debate squad placed 3rd in sweepstakes with 10 wins against 18 schools and 60 teams. The open teams, Kris and Michael Gieck and Jesus Sandoval and Carter Sheffield, also competed just missed winning medals and contributed to the team's sweepstakes winning.
