Chamber Coffee

This week's Chamber of Commerce Coffee will be hosted by ElderCare, Inc. at the Great Bend Senior Center, 2005 Kansas Ave., at 9:30 a.m., Thursday. Host will be Kevin Sundahl with greeters Melinda Kurth and Amy Habiger. Coffee, refreshments and door prizes will be available.

GBCF listening tour – Barton County identifying needs and discussing solutions

Board members and staff of the Golden Belt Community Foundation soon will host meetings in Barton County for a listening tour and series of community meetings across Barton, Pawnee, Rush, and Stafford counties. The Barton County meetings are scheduled for Monday, March 7th and Thursday, March, 10th and will be held at the following locations and times:

Swinging through

It's always a gamble when it comes to Kansas weather and planning a hunting a trip in advance. This year, the organizers of the Pheasants Forever's Rooster Booster Chapter 504 Wounded Warrior hunt gambled and won with unseasonably mild weather. It meant nearly every soldier participant signed up for the outing was able to make it, arriving at Crosby's Wildgame Adventures "Hidden Hollow Lodge" near Albert around 5 p.m. Friday night. They were greeted by members and served a welcoming dinner followed by a meet and greet to get to know one another.

City hoping for bowling convention/tourney in 2017

City of Great Bend Community Coordinator Christina Hayes announced that with efforts made by the Convention and Visitors Bureau, as well as the Great Bend Knights of Columbus, Great Bend is currently in a close race to being voted as the location for the 2017 Knights of Columbus Bowling Tournament.

April 5 election candidates announced

The list of candidates who filed for the city council and other positions in the April 5 general election has been announced by Barton County Election Officer Donna Zimmerman said. The filing deadline was in January.

Commission OKs permit allowing for cemetery expansion

The Barton County Commission Monday morning approved special use permit allowing Holy Family Catholic Church in Odin to expand its cemetery.

GBRC to host ‘Connect Program’

The Great Bend Recreation Commission will be hosting a free Stop 'N Learn Session titled, "Connect Program" on Wednesday, March 2, from 12 to 1 p.m. at the Great Bend Activity Center located at 2715 18th. The CONNECT Program provides local opportunities to screen young children 0 – 6 years to promote emotionally healthy individuals.

American Legion Unit 180 of Great Bend will host the National President, Sharon Conatser of Champaign, Ill., at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 8, at the local post home at 1011 Kansas Ave. Lunch will be served at a cost of $8.

The Republican Caucus will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 5, at various locations in Kansas. It is by secret ballot and any registered Republican can vote.

Grant writing workshop coming to Great Bend

Golden Belt Community Foundation will be hosting a one-day grant writing workshop from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. on March 30, at the Front Door Community Center on 1610 10th Street in Great Bend. This workshop is available to area non-profit organizations who wish to learn more about the skills needed to successfully submit and obtain grants.

The Barton County Farm Bureau Association will be holding its 16th Farm Safety Awareness Day Wednesday, March 2, at Barton Community College in the Case IH Technical training building. The day will begin with registration at 8:15 a.m. followed by a welcome from Barton County Farm Bureau President, Brad Birzer.

Vietnam Scholarships

Vietnam Veterans of America Hays Chapter 939 announces that they will again be awarding four, $500 scholarships for college or trade school. Students who reside in one of the following counties are eligible: Barton, Cheyenne, Decatur, Ellis, Finny, Graham, Gove, Hodgeman, Lane, Ness, Norton, Osborne, Phillips, Rawlins, Rooks, Russell, Rush, Sherman, Smith, Thomas, Trego, and Wallace.

BCC campus safety enhanced by mobile app

As part of Barton Community College's ongoing commitment to campus safety, the college's Campus Safety Office has announced the launch of Rave Guardian, a free mobile app that turns any smartphone into a personal safety device. By downloading this free safety app, students and faculty can enhance their personal safety both on and off campus.
