Accident leads to drug arrest

A non-injury accident was reported at 2:37 a.m. Friday in the 1400 block of 11th St. This was followed by a Great Bend Police Department pursuit. Jerome Sisk Jr., Great Bend, was arrested in the 1500 block of 11th St. He was booked into the Barton County Jail on charges of felony flee and elude, obstruction and possession of methamphetamine. He also had an outstanding Sedgwick County warrant. Bond was set at $10,000.

Motorcycle hits dog

A Great Bend man was injured Monday morning when the motorcycle he was driving struck a dog in South Hoisington. Sheriff Brian Bellendir said the man's injuries were not life-threatening and the dog ran away.

Prairie Godmothers to host ‘Build-A-Bag Beach Party’

The Prairie Godmothers group will hold its summer social event, the Build-A-Bag Beach Party, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the Best Western Angus Inn Courtyard, 2920 10th St. This is a come-and-go event but there will be a program at 12:30 p.m. There will be free food and socializing for all who are members or interested in the group's mission, "Women Helping Women."

Cancer group plans to beat the heat

The Touched By Cancer Support Group will hold a sharing meeting at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 19, at the Heartland Cancer Center. There will be a "How to Beat the Heat" activity. The meetings are open to everyone currently fighting the disease, cancer survivors or families and friends of those involved in all phases of the illness. Lighter starts residential fire

Children playing with a lighter started a fire Sunday morning that caused an estimted $30,000 in damage to a duplex at 5907 Eisenhower St., Fire Chief Mike Napolitano reports.

USD 428 school board to elect new officers

The Great Bend USD 428 Board of Education will elect new officers for the 2016-2017 year when it meets at 5 p.m. Monday at the District Education Center. The board will take care of routine business for the new fiscal year, such as making appointments and naming the depository for district funds. Any policies not in the 2016-2017 handbooks will be rescinded.

Festival celebrates 'Service Above Self'

ELLINWOOD - This year's After Harvest Festival Parade in downtown Ellinwood spanned several generations. It featured area youths as well as alumni and former teachers from Wheatland School, which closed 50 years ago. But the oldest entry was Duane Schwab's 102-year-old 1914 Model T Ford Touring Car.

Players make a pitch for horseshoes

A friendly game of horseshoes can become serious business when there's a championship on the line. Ernesto Diaz and Darrell Keil were just having fun last Thursday at Great Bend's horseshoe pits in Brit Spaugh Park, but they planned to compete in a tournament Saturday at the Ellinwood After Harvest Festival.
