Auction items accepted to benefit Heartland Cancer Center patients

Items for the silent and live auctions that benefit Heartland Cancer Center patients are now being accepted. The event is set for 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4 at the Club at Stoneridge.

​Two injured at K-96 and Patton Road

An injury accident was reported at 12:22 p.m. Wednesday when two vehicles collided at K-96 and Patton Road. The Great Bend Police Department reports Jairo Martinez was driving northeast on Patton Road in a Lincoln Navigator and failed to yield right of way to a Chrysler Town and Country van driven by Leroy Rube, who was traveling northwest on K-96. Rube and passenger Dorothy Rube were transported to Great Bend Regional Hospital.

Great Bend High School Panther card sales will begin on Saturday, Aug. 9. High school student athletes will be canvassing the community beginning on that date to raise funds for the athletic department.

GBHS starting band camps next week

Great Bend High School freshmen band members, drum majors and section leaders will meet Monday, Aug. 4-8 and Aug. 11-13 to prepare for the upcoming marching season. Drum majors and section leaders will congregate at 7:30 a.m., with freshmen needing to check out a school instrument meet at the high school at 7:45. The schedule has few days, but longer times this year so the Panther Pride Marching Band will be prepared for the many fall activities. The entire freshman band will start playing at 8-11:30 a.m. and also from 1-3 p.m.

Crime Stoppers of Barton County and Great Bend is seeking the public's assistance in the recovery of an all-terrain vehicle stolen last week from a building north of Ellinwood.

Commission to hold Monday morning meeting

The Barton County Commission will meet at 9 a.m. Monday at the Barton County Courthouse, 1400 Main in Great Bend. The agenda includes a donation to the Golden Belt Veterans Memorial from the Great Bend Tribune, the cleaning of a drainage ditch in Ellinwood and the Central Kansas Community Corrections budget.

Food preservation workshop scheduled for Aug. 1

A hands on food preservation workshop has a few openings remaining according to Donna Krug, Barton County Family and Consumer Science Agent. The workshop will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, August 1, at Great Bend High School. Participants are asked to pre-register by July 25, by calling Krug at 793-1910. The $10 fee will cover the cost of supplies plus a light lunch. Karen Blakeslee, director of the K-State Research and Extension Rapid Response Center, will lead the workshop.

​Our Lady of Guadalupe Pageant planned at Shafer Gallery

Barton Community College's Shafer Art Gallery will host a pageant performance of "The Miraculous Apparitions of the Virgin Mary," Friday, Aug. 1 at 7 p.m. Actors from the Prince of Peace Catholic church will portray the popular Mexican story of the Virgin Mary's miraculous appearance to Juan Diego in 1531. Admission is free.

The country unites to support finding a cure for epilepsy

On July 25, from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. the Kendrick Tinkler family will host a Lemonade for Livy stand next to Family Dollar in Great Bend. Lemonade for Livy was created by Livy's Hope, an organization whose mission is to support children with medical needs and their families. All proceeds will benefit the Epilepsy Foundation (www.epilepsy.com) and their goal to find a cure for epilepsy. The intent of the campaign is to turn the country purple (the color of epilepsy awareness) by holding at least one lemonade event in each state.
