Airport runway venue for night-time run/walk

The next Great Bend Airfest is a year away, but Airfest Committee members said they are excited about the upcoming event, Run the Runway. Community members and visitors have the opportunity to participate in an evening 5K Run/Walk or 1 mile walk on Oct. 3 at the Great Bend Municipal Airport. The event will start at 7 p.m. Participants will have the opportunity to run or walk at night with the runway lights on.

CKAVI announces annual Food/Craft Sale

Central Kansas Association for The Visually Impaired's annual Food/Craft Sale will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 26, at the Convent auditorium, 3600 Broadway Ave. Sponsors note there is easy access north of the convent off 17th St. Baked goods, handmade crafts, and new and used items will be sold.

Square Dance lessons

Fall Square Dance lessons will start on Sept. 28, and run through Nov. 23, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Sunday afternoons at the First Presbyterian Church. Singles and couples of all ages are welcome. The Hoisington Swinging Stars Square Dance Club will sponsor the lessons. Cost for the lessons are $25 per person which includes refreshments. There will be nine sessions with three different callers to prepare dancers to feel comfortable with different types of callers when they attend dances. Brother to Brother

Sunday, the Tribune began a four part series about the military service of brothers Jack and Donald Matthews, two Great Bend veterans who served their country during World War II and the Cold War during the Korean Conflict. Both will be memorialized at the Golden Belt Veterans Memorial at the Golden Belt Memorial Park. Don Matthews shared his brother's memoirs with readers, which covered the period between D-Day and the Battle of the Bulge during 1944. Today, some history about Donald's service as the Cold War began.
