'Planning for Winter Interest' piques the interest of Garden Club members

A program by Delores Baker entitled "Planning for Winter Interest in the Garden" was enjoyed by the members of Great Bend Garden Club at their January meeting. With a number of dried plants from her own garden as illustrations, Baker shared ideas for creating attractive landscaping scenes and bouquets of dried plants and shrubs.

Anti-bullying movie to be shown again

The Great Bend Anti-bullying Task Force will have a reshowing of "Bullying: The Movie" from 7-8:45 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, at the Great Bend Front Door, 1615 10th St. After the film, there will be information packets available and T-shirts for sale. The movie is free, but seating is limited.

City Council meets Monday night

The Great Bend City Council will meet at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the City Office, 1209 Williams. On the agenda are a Great Bend Municipal Airport hanger lease, support for Job Fest, a consulting agreement for the Railroad Avenue/U.S. 281 project and Rural Housing Incentive District public hearings.

Mortgage registration fees on Commission agenda

The Barton County Commission will meet at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the Barton County Courthouse, 1400 Main in Great Bend. The agenda includes a resolution supporting the retention of the mortgage registration fee, sand bids, Central Kansas Community Corrections revised budget, and appointments to the Center for Counseling and Consultation and Health Advisory boards.

DePue Brothers Share Their Blend of Bluegrass, Classical, Rock Music

Four violinist brothers who formed the DePue Brothers Band will share their vivid blend of bluegrass, classical and rock music in a concert for the Golden Belt Community Concert Association at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, at the Great Bend Municipal Auditorium.

USD 428 Board of Education will meet at 5 p.m. on Monday at the District Education Office, 201 S. Patton Road. Sterling College hosts Robert Burns Night January 7th

Sterling College is welcoming back new and old acquaintances on Saturday, Jan. 25, for Robert Burns Night. Recognizing the achievements of Robert Burns, Scottish poet and songwriter, this event will be one of many similar events held around the world on Jan. 25 to celebrate Burns's birthday. Guest speaker to visit NAMI meeting

The local National Alliance on Mental Illness will meet from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the Great Bend Regional Hospital cafeteria. 2014 New Year Baby

Great Bend Regional Hospital and Barton County welcomed the first baby of 2014 on Jan. 3. Raegan Denae Alefs was born at 3:44 p.m. She weighed 5 pounds 1 oz. Her parents, Ashley and Ryan Alefs, were surprised as she was about three weeks early. Ashley is a RN at GBRH and had actually worked the few days before the birth. If she continues in her mothers footsteps, she will be a fourth generation nurse in the family.

Brownies conduct service project

Girl Scout Brownies in Troop 11142 recently conducted a sweet community service project at the Heartland Cancer Center in Great Bend. They made and delivered 50 chemo kits filled with journals of inspirational pictures and quotes, along with pens, toothbrushes, hand sanitizer, lotion, candy and mints. They also made special kits with toys for children.

Playground report on Rec agenda

The Great Bend Recreation Commission will hear a report from the playground advisory committee when it meets at 4 p.m. Monday at the Carl Soden Recreation Center, 1214 Stone St. The board will also discuss goals for the coming year. There will be an executive session for discussion of a personnel matter. Board action will be needed in connection with the National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA) National Congress, set for Sept. 15-17.
