Barktober an event for dogs and their people

Hands of Hope Rescue and Advanced America will hold a fundraising Barktober Dogs Days event from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Oct. 22, at Advanced America's Great Bend location, 2800 E. 10th St. There will have a pulled pork dinner with desert and beverage for $5. Dine-in and carry out will be available. They will hold a prize drawing for ar quilt and other items, along with many items that will be for sale.

Quivira to present a Crane Tour and Open House October 29

Cranes will be the featured topic at a special event planned from 8 a.m. to noon on Oct. 29, at Quivira National Wildlife Refuge. Offered by Quivira and the Friends of Quivira staff, the event will begin with a guided bus tour, followed by a program about Whooping Cranes. A brunch will be served following the program. During the event, visitors will be able to meet and speak with both Refuge and Friends staff about Quivira and its various programs and projects.

RACE FOR THE FINISH

More than 100 runners participated in the Barton County YP5K and Half Marathon race Saturday morning. Most came from Great Bend and other Barton County communities, but other cities in Kansas, as well as some from Oklahoma and Colorado were represented. It was the second year for the race, but a different route was used this year. In an effort to keep crossing highways to a minimum this year, while still highlighting the scenic points of the city as much as possible, the starting point shifted from Veterans Park to Jack Kilby Square.

Remembering a loved one

Many gathered to remember a friend, a companion and a loved one during a dedication Friday morning at the Memorial Rose Garden at the Great Bend Cemetery. A statue was dedicated in the honor of Mary Kummer-Maneth, who those present said she is truly missed in the community.
