Radon—a serious public health concern

Many Kansans are unaware that radon gas may be sneaking into their homes, businesses or schools. January has been named Radon Awareness Month to help educate communities and provide free testing in participating counties. Barton County Health Department will be distributing free radon testing kits on a first come, first served basis beginning on Monday, January 6, during regular business hours.

The history of Perkins and the American Flag

The feeling in America in the early 1970s was changing, full of turmoil and political unrest. America was beginning to retreat in Vietnam, and the Watergate scandal was draining citizens of their patriotism. The negative public sentiment and disrespect toward America and the flag deeply disturbed our owner at that time, Wyman Nelson. During all of this, Perkins was expanding rapidly with an average of two store openings per month bringing the total up from 12 stores to over 350 in a few short years.

Snow sculptures wanted for GBRC contest

A foot of snow with school out may be the perfect combination for a prolific season of snow art. Garet Fitzpatrick at the Great Bend Recreation Commission reminds area residents that its annual snow sculpture contest runs through March 31, 2014.

WICHITA - Great Bend received 11 inches of snow, according to the National Weather Service in Wichita, which covers southern and south central Kansas. McPherson County received in excess of 10 inches of snow.

Slide-offs result in minor injuries

As the snow fell Saturday, the Barton County Sheriff's Office warned motorists to stay off the roads if possible, and the Emergency Accident Reporting System went into effect. Motorists did not have to immediately report non-injury accidents if no alcohol was involved and the roadway was not blocked, but were advised to report accidents as soon as possible after the storm had cleared.

Brownies conduct service project

Girl Scout Brownies in Troop 11142 recently conducted a sweet community service project at the Heartland Cancer Center in Great Bend. They made and delivered 50 chemo kits filled with journals of inspirational pictures and quotes, along with pens, toothbrushes, hand sanitizer, lotion, candy and mints. They also made special kits with toys for children.
