New coach ‘proud to be a panther’

Great Bend High School's new head boys basketball coach, Tim Brooks, will meet student athletes Tuesday morning. Brooks also attended Monday's USD 428 Board of Education meeting where his appointment was approved. He will also serve as assistant activities director at Great Bend Middle School and will be a strength-conditioning coach at GBHS.

Olmitz shows support for VFD

Saturday, April 30, Barton County traffic to Olmitz was up as fun-seekers headed north to the Olmitz Volunteer Fire Department Fundraiser. The goal, to build community and raise money for needed equipment for the volunteer firefighters who dedicate their time to keeping the people of Olmitz and the surrounding area safe.

Mosquito spraying to begin early

Due complaints about mosquitoes, the City of Great Bend Public Works Department will begin to spray for the pesky insects this coming Thursday. This is earlier than originally planned, Great Bend Street Superintendent Mike Crawford said.

Sunflower bank’s abc education program a success

Sunflower Bank raised $102,500 during its 2016 ABC campaign developed to support education in our communities. Over $7,450 of the total is being donated to schools and students in Great Bend and Ellinwood. The program began in 2001 and has generated over $1,036,700 throughout the past 15 years for schools and students in Kansas, Colorado, and Missouri.

Grass Workshop

Staff from Quivira National Wildlife Refuge will present a program entitled "Grasses and Grass-like Plants" from 7 to 8 p.m. on May 23, at the Ida Long Goodman Memorial Library in St. John. This free educational workshop, designed for Middle School age children through adults, is an introduction to this often confusing and difficult to learn group of plants. Panther bands spring concert recognizes seniors, parents, accomplishments

Panther band members will present their spring concert at 7 p.m. on Monday in the Great Bend High School gym. The band seniors and their parents will be recognized, as well as all of the band student's achievements during the year.
