Gas prices see little movement

The Kansas gas price average has seen little movement recently, holding steady at $2.17, the American Automobile Association reported this week. Locally, the Great Bend Price has held a tick above that average at $2.19 for several weeks as well.

Rush Center to again celebrate St. Patrick’s Day

RUSH CENTER – Rush Center will host its annual St. Patrick Celebration on Saturday, March 11. The event will feature a breakfast of biscuits and gravy at 9 a.m. at the Walnut Valley Senior Center and lunch featuring Irish stew from 11 a.m. through the afternoon at Township Hall. The parade will start at 2:30 followed by BINGO at the Senior Center. Downtown will feature a car show and various booths, children's games and a cake walk.

Federal disaster declaration OKed following ice storm

President Donald Trump granted Gov. Sam Brownback's request for a federal disaster declaration for 18 Kansas counties, including Barton, affected by a severe winter ice storm that struck the state Jan. 13-16, the Kansas Adjutant General's Office announced Friday afternoon.

Out of the Morgue

As we wrap up February, we do so with a nod to Black History Month. One hundred years ago, a man with Great Bend connections, Oscar Micheaux, published his second novel, "The Homesteader," which was soon after made into his first film. Micheaux went on to influence other major filmmakers and continues to add to the richness of our local history. Here, in a special edition of Out of the Morgue, is a recap of his and his family's story.

Kiwanis club gears up for Pancake Day
