Brownies conduct service project

Girl Scout Brownies in Troop 11142 recently conducted a sweet community service project at the Heartland Cancer Center in Great Bend. They made and delivered 50 chemo kits filled with journals of inspirational pictures and quotes, along with pens, toothbrushes, hand sanitizer, lotion, candy and mints. They also made special kits with toys for children.

USD 428 Board of Education meeting

The USD 428 Board of Education will meet at 5 p.m. on Monday at the District Education Office, 201 South Patton Road. Items on the agenda include approval of flooring bid for Eisenhower Elementary School; approval of 2015-2016 BOE meeting schedule; approval to alter District Education Center summer schedule; assessments updates; grounds improvements; and licensed teacher resignations and licensed teacher appointments.

Playground report on Rec agenda

The Great Bend Recreation Commission will hear a report from the playground advisory committee when it meets at 4 p.m. Monday at the Carl Soden Recreation Center, 1214 Stone St. The board will also discuss goals for the coming year. There will be an executive session for discussion of a personnel matter. Board action will be needed in connection with the National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA) National Congress, set for Sept. 15-17.

Barton music recital rescheduled for Monday

The Barton Community College recital of instrumental and vocal performances that was scheduled for Thursday, May 7 has been rescheduled for noon on Monday, May 11 in the Dorothy Moses Morrison Chapel, located in the Fine Arts Building, F-157. The recital is free.

Vehicle accident blocks traffic

A traffic accident blocked traffic at Navajo Road and K-96 Friday morning in Great Bend. The accident involved a Chevrolet 1500 4x4 and a Toyota Corolla. Police report the driver of the Chevrolet truck failed to yield right of way at a stop sign and collided with the northbound Toyota. The Corolla sustained heavy damage and was towed from the scene. The driver of the car was transported to Great Bend Regional Hospital with possible injuries. Names of the drivers were unavailable.

Barton MLT student earns Outstanding Student award

Barton Medical Laboratory Technician student Amber Gabel of Hays was named Outstanding Student on April 28 by the Kansas Society of Clinical Laboratory Science (KSCLS) at the KSCLS and Clinical Laboratory Managers Association (CLMA) annual conference. Gabel also received a $250 scholarship from CLMA. Requirements focused on GPA, credit hours enrolled, communication, instructor recommendations and teamwork.
