It was a concert with a twist. Band members became teachers and audience members became students. The sixth-grade bands at Park and Lincoln elementary schools each recently held an open house to showcase what they have been learning in band this year, said Don Regehr, band teacher.

Emerging ceramic artist hosts free workshop at BCC

Studio potter and Wichita State University professor Brenda Lichman is presenting a free ceramics workshop from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11 in T-151 at Barton Community College. Lichman has been a visiting artist at the Shafer Gallery, brought in by art instructor Bill Forst who specializes in ceramics. Forst applied for a mini-grant from the Barton Foundation in August to bring Lichman in for the workshop.

Eagles offer early Valentine's Day dinner

The Fraternal Order of Eagles, 1024 Main, will serve their annual Valentine's Day dinner on Saturday, Feb. 11. The will serve prime rib, green beans, twice baked potato and a salad from 6-8 p.m. The dinner will be $20 per plate or $36 per couple. A DJ will play music from about 8 p.m. until they close.

Route set for 43rd annual Bike Across Kansas

Registration is now open for the 2017 Biking Across Kansas bicycle tour across the state. The 43rd year of the largest bicycling event in Kansas history - a 513-mile ride across the state - begins on Saturday, June 10.

Chase, shots fired, leads to arrest

Three people were arrested around 3 a.m. Friday after fleeing from Barton County Sheriff's deputies, Sheriff Brian Bellendir said. The vehicular pursuit began near the 200 block of NE 20 Ave. in Great Bend and ended just east of U.S. 281 near NE 80 Road south of Hoisington. At one point during the chase, one of the occupants fired several rounds from the car.
