Starting Sept. 1 through Sept. 6, the City of Hoisington will begin a permitted road closing of US-281 Highway from Reference Post 114 to Reference Post 116 for the annual Labor Day Celebration in Barton County.
The Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism (KDWPT) has confirmed the presence of invasive zebra mussels in Cedar Bluff Reservoir in Trego County. The lake is owned and operated by the federal Bureau of Reclamation (BOR). In July, the BOR conducted its annual plankton sampling survey which revealed zebra mussel veligers (larvae). The results were reported to KDWPT aquatic nuisance species staff on Wednesday, Aug. 24. The Barton County Commission will meet at 9 a.m. Monday at the Barton County Courthouse, 1400 Main in Great Bend. The agenda includes a conditional use permit for Midwest Energy to build a communications tower near Ellinwood, a memorandum of understanding for Next Generation 911 and the replacement of a road grader for the Road and Bridge Department.
At 12;35 p.m. on Thursday one mile south of Bushton, a 1968 piper fixed wing aircraft flown by Brad Fitchett, 51 of Ellsworth, was in the process of spraying pesticide on a crop field and had to make an emergency landing when the engine stalled.
First responders in Barton County are invited to a free chicken barbecue dinner, from 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 31, at the Dillons No. 3, 1811 Main St. in Great Bend. It will be open to all law enforcement officers and firefighters, said Bob Allen, one of the cooks.
Average retail gasoline prices in Kansas have risen 9.6 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.15 Thursday, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 1,329 gas outlets in Kansas. This compares with the national average that has increased 6.5 cents per gallon in the last week to $2.20.

LARNED - Tim Keck, secretary for the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services, discussed the future of Larned State Hospital during a public meeting Wednesday at the Pawnee County Courthouse.
The Great Bend Police Department and other agencies responded to a shooting incident in the 3900 block of Forest Ave on May 21. Although the suspects were gone when officers arrived, they were able to quickly ascertain the identities of the suspects, build a case, and obtain warrants for the arrest of the two suspects involved in the shooting.
