Veterans rep to visit Great Bend

A Veterans Service Representative from the Kansas Commission on Veterans' Affairs will be at the Great Bend Kansas Works Center, 1025 Main Street, from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 11, to assist veterans and their families in applying for VA benefits. Area veterans are encouraged to inquire and see if their health condition is linked to their time in service. The Kansas Commission on Veterans' Affairs is a state agency that provides free assistance to veterans and their families with veterans' benefits. Call 785-625-8532 for more information.

Bike Brew Q raises $5K for Cystic Fibrosis Foundation

Over 160 cyclists, craft beer and barbecue enthusiasts came together and raised upwards of $5,000 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation at the second annual Bike Brew Q event at the Great Bend Expo Complex on July 29. Cyclists headed out in the morning and routes were available from 20-72 miles and included road and gravel routes. All routes included support and gear (SAG) stops sponsored by local businesses and philanthropy groups, and gave riders a chance to rest, hydrate and refuel.

BCC budget hearing is Tuesday

The Barton Community College Board of Trustees will hold a budget hearing at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8, in Room F-30, on the lower level of the Fine Arts Building. The board will also hold its monthly study session. Topics for discussion include the July financial report, Composite Financial Index (CFI) rating index, City of Great Bend Revitalization Plan, Higher Learning Center presentation, and Corrections programming.

Sen. Moran to host Kansas Listening Tour stop in Barton County

U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) announced that he will visit Great Bend as part of his Kansas Listening Tour on Thursday, Aug. 10. Area residents are encouraged to attend the meeting from 2-3 p.m. in the meeting room at American Ag Credit, 5634 10th St., and share feedback with Sen. Moran on the critical issues facing Kansas and the nation.

GBPD study to look at wages, morale

It was during a special Great Bend City Council meeting June 29 that Police Chief Cliff Couch leveled accusations of unethical behavior within city government. Following four executive sessions totalling two hours and 45 minutes, the council approved contracting with an outside party to do a compensation and management study of the Great Bend Police Department.

Council changes venue for meeting

The Monday Great Bend City Council meeting will be moved to the Great Bend Events Center, 3111 10th St., to accommodate an anticipated larger-than normal crowd in light of the controversy involving Police Chief Cliff Couch and the council, city officials announced Thursday afternoon. It will start at 7:30 p.m.
