Kiwanis Easter Egg Hunt is Saturday

The annual Easter Egg Hunt sponsored by the Great Bend Noon Kiwanis Club is set for 9:30 a.m. sharp on Saturday, April 15. The hunt will be at the Kiwanis Walking Track on the north side of Veterans Memorial Park, just off McKinley Street.

Library announces closings

Great Bend Public Library will close at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 13, and will be closed all day Friday for schedule replacement of a drain line. The library will be open on Saturday, but will be closed Sunday for the Easter holiday.

HOISINGTON - Two males were arrested Tuesday by the Hoisington Police Department after a search warrant yielded suspected methamphetamine and marijuana in a residence.

Search organized for missing priest

PROTECTION - Father Marvin Reif, 53, walked away from the Protection Valley Manor in Protection, KS on Apr. 3. A priest in the Dodge City Diocese, Fr. Marvin has suffered from mental illness for a number of years. He has served in churches throughout central and southwest Kansas.

District searches for new teachers

The search is on for next year's teachers at Great Bend USD 428. When the school board met on Monday, Assistant Superintendent John Popp said he and other district representatives spent the last week in Michigan, recruiting educators.

House proposes flat tax, both houses agree to new trms for KPERS

TOPEKA - The House of Representatives has been considering several options to improve the fiscal shape of the State Government's budget. One possible solution which passed out of the House Tax Committee on Thursday, March 30, was House Bill 2395 which makes several changes to the current tax code from income brackets to tax deductions. The greatest change made is that the bill creates a level income tax rate of 5% for all income earners. The bill also retains the income tax exemption for any person earning under $5,000 and those earning $12,500 or less filing jointly.

Wanted fugitive captured

The Barton County Sheriff deputies arrested Eliseo Velasco Jr. age 28 of Great Bend at 8 p.m. on Friday, April 7. Velasco was a wanted fugitive for outstanding warrants.
