USD 112 eying bond issue

WILSON - Central Plains Middle School in Bushton could be a template for lighting and HVAC improvements throughout Central Plains Unified School District 112, Superintendent Greg Clark said Tuesday. The district is considering a bond issue to fund similar improvements to its six other buildings scattered among four communities.

Great Bend Public Library announces new director

After months of strategizing and searching, the Great Bend Public Library and the Central Kansas Library System came to an agreement last week who they wanted to direct both organizations. Monday afternoon, at the Great Bend Public Library Board of Directors meeting, it was announced they had offered the position to Gail Santy, and she accepted. Effective Jan. 1, 2018, she will succeed Harry Willems who was appointed in January 2009 and served as the organization's fifth director, a position he held for nine years.

BCC instructor provides training in Okinawa to US soldiers

Barton Community College Military Schools instructor Lawrence Weber taught a five-day Maintenance Manager course to 24 U.S. Soldiers on the Japanese island of Okinawa in September. Barton was contacted, as being one of the few organizations able to provide the type of training the unit needed.

Climate change predicted to reduce size, stature of dominant Midwest plant

MANHATTAN - The economically important big bluestem grass - a dominant prairie grass and a major forage grass for cattle - is predicted to reduce its growth and stature by up to 60 percent percent in the next 75 years because of climate change, according to a study involving Kansas State University researchers.

Marijuana found after vehicles collide

A two-vehicle collision with possible injuries was reported at 9:42 a.m. Friday at 18th St. and Baker Ave. Lt. Scott Bieberle at the Great Bend Police Department reports suspected marijuana was found, but no arrests were made at the time. Everyone refused medical treatment at the scene.

Suspect attempted to hide on roof

Israel Klein was arrested for a Great Bend Municipal Court warrant for failure to appear, at 3:18 p.m. Sunday in the 1400 block of Main Street. Klein reportedly crawled onto a roof and attempted to hide behind an air conditioning unit.

A Friday afternoon fire at 2607 19th St. appeared suspicious at first, but a closer look found "nothing suspicious," according to Lt. Scott Bieberle at the Great Bend Police Department.

Stabbing victim 'not cooperative'

A man who was taken to Great Bend Regional Hospital early Monday was "not cooperative" with police, Lt. Scott Bieberle at the Great Bend Police Department said. Police were contacted by the hospital at 1:14 a.m. after he was taken there by relatives.
