​Trooper’s domestic violence trial underway

It took most of the day Tuesday to choose a jury for Darrin Hirsh, a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper charged with aggravated assault and other counts of domestic violence in Barton County District Court. The jury is scheduled to hear opening statements at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday when the trial resumes.

St. John concession sales will benefit Secret Santa

ST. JOHN - The concession stand at the Central Plains and st. John basketball games Tuesday will be selling Wheatland Café bierocks, pizza pockets, and pigs-in-a-blanket as usual. A chili and cinnamon roll meal deal is also featured. A bowl of chili and a Wheatland Café cinnamon roll will cost $5.

Veteran’s Memorial Lake stocked with trout

With the subsiding of the toxic blue-green algae problem, Veteran's Memorial Lake in Great Bend will again receive regular stockings of rainbow trout as part of the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism's winter trout program. The first fish were delivered Tuesday morning.

County to upgrade 911 system

It is happening sooner than Barton County officials were expecting or wanting, but the upgrade to the latest Next Generation 911 system will take place in the coming months. The County Commission approved the $104,000 conversion Monday morning.

Barton County 4-H members were honored for their accomplishments at the 81st annual 4-H Achievement Celebration. Holiday Hustle

The United Way of Central Kansas walked among the lights of Veteran's Memorial Park this past Friday to encourage exercise, family, and giving during this Holiday Season. The Light to Unite Holiday Hustle had to be postponed due to weather, but the event went on and was a great night of fun. Historical Society holds volunteer appreciation

Anyone who has served as a volunteer at the Barton County Historical Society this year was invited Thursday to an appreciation reception and a sneak peek at the holiday exhibit. The public can view the exhibit free during the Ghosts of Christmas Past Open House from 1-4 p.m. Sunday at the Barton County Historical Society Village and Museum, south of the Arkansas River bridge on U.S. 281 in Great Bend.
