GBHS Speech Team places nine events again

The Great Bend High School Forensics Team competed at the Jetmore Invitational Tournament on Saturday, April 13th. The team had nine individual placings like they did at the last tournament they competed in earlier in the week, on Monday, April 8th. The team also qualified three new events to the State Championship tournament giving them a total of 16 events which is a full entry. Every team member broke into finals in at least one event, which consisted of Nathaniel Cheney, Kenna Dirks, Michael Gieck, Mallorie McNett, Jesus Sandoval, Kameko Schultz, and Kane Schumacher. Garden Pot workshop

Kick off spring gardening with a workshop about making your own faux stone pots for succulents. The first in a year-long series of hands-on exploration workshops is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 27, at the Grassroots Art Center in Lucas. Carolyn Bigham and Doris Johnson will help participants explore some of the possibilities for creating custom garden pots using a mix of concrete, vermiculite and plaster. Toy Train weekend at the Luray Stone Church

On Saturday and Sunday, April 27 and 28, the Stone Church in Luray will be transformed into a huge railway system of blue-track Thomas trains just waiting for young engineers and playful adults. Besides the trains and yards and yards of track, there will be concessions available from the trackside depot. The playday runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Earth Day to be celebrated at Kansas Wetlands Ed Center

Kansas Wetlands Education Center is celebrating Earth Day 2013 with solar-baked cookies, organic gardening, nature art and alternative energy vehicles. The free public event runs from 1:30-5 p.m. on Sunday, April 21, at the KWEC, located 10 miles northeast of Great Bend on K-156 just inside Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife Area.

Custer's burial causes historical debate

Author Sandy Barnard will discuss George Armstrong Custer during a joint meeting of the Barton County Historical Society and the Quivira chapter of the Santa Fe Trail Association on Monday, April 22. Barnard, a well known Custer expert, will provide the program, "Where Custer Fell and Where is He Buried?" at 7:30 p.m. at the Barton County Historical Society Museum, located south at 85 South U.S. 281 – just south of the Arkansas River bridge in Great Bend.

Historic bridge on commission agenda

The Barton County Commission will meet at 9 a.m. Monday at the Barton County Courthouse, 1400 Main in Great Bend. The agenda includes the possible replacement of an historic stone bridge near Claflin, a National Public Safety Telecommunications Week proclamation, an emergency vehicle designation for Dove Chevrolet Buick Cadillac and new doors for the Health Department.

Old and young to take shot at nixing malaria

Great Bend First United Methodist Church and Trinity Methodist Church will co-sponsor the Shoot For No Malaria contest Sunday, April 14 at the GBHS Panther Activity Center. All proceeds will go to "Imagine No Malaria." Funds received will purchase mosquito netting and help in educating people in tropical, under-developed nations where malaria is still a menacing killer.

Relay pageant a success

On Dec. 6, Relay for Life of Barton County's Team Hope held a Winter Wonderland Pageant at the Elk's Lodge in Great Bend. There were 25 girls and 1 boy competing from the Central Kansas Glamour Kids.

On Monday, the Barton County Sheriff's Office received calls from individuals in rural Great Bend and rural Pawnee Rock, both reporting attempted fraud via telephone scams.
