City of Larned considers billing changes

LARNED - Every month, the city of Larned sends an average of 529 late notices, or "red" bills, to utility customers. That's nearly 20 percent of the city's 2,700 utility contracts. Larned's City Council declared that's too many, and something needs to change. They tasked Kara Rath, the utility clerk, and Monica Steiner, the finance director, to conduct a study of how other cities like Larned combat similar problems. Rath and Steiner presented their proposal to the council Monday night.

An expensive proposition

The City of Great Bend's on-call engineering firm Professional Engineering Consultants of Wichita will discontinue its study of ball field lighting for Veterans Memorial Park after the City Council Monday night authorized Mayor Mike Allison to sign the agreement with PEC ending its involvement in the project.

Basement fire damages home

An explosion woke the occupants of 806 Hubbard St. around 2:20 a.m. Monday. Great Bend Fire Chief Mike Napolitano said the couple living at that address escaped through smoke and heat and went to a neighbor's house to call 911.

Milling and overlay to begin on US-56 From Kinsley to Larned

Starting this week, the Kansas Department of Transportation will begin construction of a 25-mile road milling and overlay project on US-56 Highway in Pawnee and Edward counties, beginning at the US-50/US-56 junction north along US-56 to the south city limits of Larned.
