BCC will host eclipse events

A total solar eclipse will occur over the United States on Aug. 21, visible on a path from Oregon to South Carolina, crossing over northeast Kansas. Barton County is expected to experience 94 percent of a full eclipse at about 1 p.m.

Great Bend Brit Spaugh Zoo loses longtime resident ‘Sunny’ the tiger

It is with great sadness that the Great Bend-Brit Spaugh Zoo announced Wednesday the passing of its beloved Bengal Tiger, Sunny. Sunny Delight was humanely euthanized Wednesday after animal care and veterinary staff decided that his quality of life had deteriorated to a point that we could no longer keep him comfortable.

Weekend accident claims Stafford Co. official

STAFFORD - A current Stafford County Commissioner, Shane Stimatze, was found dead at his home in rural Stafford County on Monday from an apparent accident that occurred sometime over the weekend.

Vehicle registration snafu uncovered

Claflin Police Chief Gary Vaughan was approached last week by a Claflin man who lent his vehicle to a friend. The friend was stopped by a Kansas Highway Patrol officer and ticketed for illegal registration on his 2002 Toyota Sequoia.

Teachers tell district why they stay

Historically, Unified School District 428 has surveyed teachers leaving the district. But, for the first time, teachers staying were asked why they wanted to remain in Great Bend, Assistant Superintendent John Popp told the USD 428 School Board Monday night.

Commission OKs ‘jake brake’ ban

About a month ago, a resident complained to the Barton County Commission about the use of "jake brakes" on South McKinley and Railroad Avenue just outside the Great Bend City limits. Monday morning, commissioners took action on this matter.

Saturday morning, as 17th Ave. East of McKinley began to fill up with floats and other parade entries, families made their way to the parade route on the South side of Vets Park. They were there for the first ever Party in the Park Wet-Dry parade. The route was divided in two at the railroad tracks just west of the lake, with dry spectators lining up to the East, and wet spectators to the West.

Commission to hold Monday morning meeting

The Barton County Commission will meet at 9 a.m. Monday at the Barton County Courthouse, 1400 Main in Great Bend. The agenda includes an update on the Oxford Houses, the use of engine compression brakes within a mile of cooperative city limits in the county and the appointment of a deputy district coroner.

U.S. 56 milling and overlay from Ellinwood to Lyons to begin

A 19-mile asphalt mill and overlay surfacing project on U.S. 56 in Barton and Rice counties will begin this week. The project is located from the two lane-four lane transition east of the City of Ellinwood east to the west city limits of Lyons.
