KC Wolf visits Hoisington students

Hoisington elementary students were treated to a visit by Dan Meers, who performs as the Kansas City Cheifs' mascot, KC Wolf, on Thursday morning at Roosevelt Elementary School. The visit was courtesy of the Hoisington Elementary Parents Association.

Scouts turn out for Ellinwood City Council

ELLINWOOD -When Ellinwood Scout master Scott Reser learned the city council would discuss the fate of the scout house at Wolf Park Tuesday evening, he picked up the phone and rallied scout leaders and scouts who filled the city office to show their support of fixing the roof and keeping the building around for future generations of scouts to meet in.

The Model Association of Central Kansas (MACK) is an organization providing a safe, family-oriented environment to promote education and wholesome recreation for its members and the community as a whole through modeling activities. GBHS poster presentation

Every year Julie Bugner-Smith, United Way of Central Kansas Executive Director, goes to all the schools in Ellinwood, Great Bend, and Larned to talk to the 5th graders about the United Way. Each student is given a poster to draw a picture on depicting their vision of the United Way, incorporating the Campaign Theme for that year. This year the theme was "Community Super Heroes." This past Friday night at the Panthers game, the Poster Contest winners presented their posters to businesses and leaders in Great Bend.

Judgement House presents ‘The Silent Killer’ this weekend

Death arrives unexpectedly, and there are choices required that are important and determine our eternal outcome. This, in brief, is the message delivered in a unique way each year through the Judgement House production at the Great Bend Church of the Nazarene. Members Dale Pruter and wife Sherry, have been instrumental in bringing the annual live walk-through drama to Great Bend for the past 10 years. Wednesday night, they were busy with actors and actresses, recruited from several area churches, running through lines during dress rehearsal leading up to the opening Friday night, Oct. 16.

Trumpeter swans pulled from lake at zoo

The three trumpeter swans at the Great Bend Brit Spaugh Zoo were removed from public display last week to protect them from an increase of avian influenza that is sweeping across the country, Zookeeper Sara Hamlin said. Meanwhile, the zoo's alligators have been moved to their fall/winter quarters.

Hoisington City Council considers new rules on accessory buildings

For several months, the Hoisington planning commission has been working to find a balance between restriction and ease of future development. Changes to the existing zoning ordinances within the city pertaining to accessory buildings have been their focus. These include sheds, garages, and other structures like carports that exist on a residential lot along with the main structure. At Monday night's city council meeting, Jerry Renk, spokesman for the commission, addressed the council. With the public hearing out of the way as of Sept. 21, and with only positive comments received, the commission recommended adoption of the changes.
