People choose from a variety of homemade soups and desserts during the third annual "Taste of Hoisington," March 1 at the Hoisington Activity Center. The event was sponsored by the Hoisington Ministerial Association, and the proceeds will benefit people in need in the community.
Golden Belt Home Health & Hospice (GBHH&H) will sponsor a new Thursday afternoon grief support group in Great Bend from March 13 through May 1. It will meet each Thursday from 1:30 to 3 p.m. in Conference Room 103 of the Medical Building at 3520 Lakin in Great Bend. Use the Lincoln Street entrance.
Kansas State University Opera presents the one-act operas "The Old Maid and the Thief" by Gian Carlo Menotti and "Trial by Jury" by W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan at 7:30 p.m. on March 6-8, and 2:30 p.m. on March 9, in the Mark A. Chapman Theatre in Nichols Hall.
Barton Community College hosted a blood drive Friday in the Case New Holland Training Facility. They received 32 units of blood. Barton Visitor Center Receptionist Reba Hickel, pictured, donated and said she does so as often as she can. "I want to help people in need," she said. "I wish more people would donate because it really does help save lives."
A benefit hog feed will be held from 4:30 to 7 p.m. on March 8 at Mom's Bar and Grill in Seward. Proceeds will benefit the Special Olympics Team "The Storm" and Kansas School of the Blind "KanLuvKids" program. Tickets are $8 per plate for adults and $5 per plate for kids 12 and under. The Great Bend Seventh-day Adventist School is taking orders for the spring shipment of Bithell Berries from Boring, Ore. The 14 pound boxes of fresh fruit are flash frozen so to better divide them upon arrival. Available now are Marion blackberries, red raspberries, boysenberries, blueberries, strawberries sliced with sugar, strawberries whole, loganberries, pie cherries, sweet cherries, peaches, apricots, apples and rhubarb. At Great Bend Health and Rehabilitation's Valentine party on Feb. 14, all residents were noted as kings and queens, however with a draw of names of residents attending event, LaVane Rohr and Claudine Ringwald represented them as king and queen. They were crowned as Walt Pennington entertained with music. All residents were presented a red rose compliments of Dillons and their customers and cookies and punch were provided by Epsilon Sigma Alpha (Zeta Gamma Chapter).
Hoisington's City Council agreed to call a special meeting Tuesday evening to discuss altering the city's ordinance to allow fireworks to be discharged on both July 3 and 4, following suit with the Barton County Commission's Monday decision. The county commission's decision applies only to unincorporated areas. Some, but not all, cities have been following suit. In order to allow the extra day, the council would need to approve the change, and it would need to be printed once in the official city newspaper, The Hoisington Dispatch, two weeks prior to the date. The USD 431 Board of Education decided in favor of hiring a food service company to manage the school lunch and breakfast program at a savings of nearly $100,000 for the coming school year. With the specter of budget cuts looming makes this 80 percent cost cutting measure particularly significant.
