Chili cook-off moves to bandshell

The location of Saturday's Charity Chili Cook-off for Sunflower Diversified Services Diversified has moved to the bandshell area of the Barton County Courthouse Square. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Nov. 12.

Commissioners re-elected

Two Barton County Commissioners were re-elected Tuesday. With no opponents on the ballot, Republicans Homer Kruckenberg and Don Davis won easily, although Kruckenberg did face a write-in opponent in Sharon Wondra.

Elementary school build on target for completion

HOISINGTON - Monday night, the USD 431 Board of Education received an update from Nabholz Construction Rep. Mickey Starkey that he said should put their minds at ease. He handed out copies of the milestone schedule agreed upon at the beginning of the project to each board member. He noted that while the build was behind schedule in one area, steel construction, it is well ahead of schedule in another, drywalling. According to the schedule, drywalling was expected to begin in February, but according to the revised schedule, it will actually begin during the first or second week of December.

EGS students hold mock election

ELLINWOOD - Ellinwood Grade School students participated in a school-wide election Tuesday. While their parents might remember similar election day events from their youth, putting marks on a paper ballot and dropping them in a box, thier offspring took part in a more high-tech experience.

TAYLOR HEADING TO TOPEKA

Tuesday, District 33 elected Republican Mary Jo Taylor of Stafford to represent them for the next four years. She had a decisive win over Democrat Matt Bristow of Ellinwood after a race that would be defined by the decidedly respectful tone taken by both candidates took towards one another.

Sterling students bring “Garden” to life

The Irish term "wick" refers to something that appears lifeless but in fact has a spark of life within it. "Wick" also happens to be one of the most rousing, upbeat songs in the Broadway musical "The Secret Garden" which Sterling High School Theatre will present at 7:30 p.m. this Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Nov. 10, 11 and 12, in the school's theatre.
