Asphalt overlay on K-156 Highway in Barton County

Starting around Thursday, the Kansas Department of Transportation will begin an asphalt overlay project on a 17-mile section of K-156 Highway in Barton County, from the Barton-Ellsworth County line to the US-56/K-156 junction east of Great Bend.

KHP requests assistance locating possible witness and information on US-56 fatality crash involving

This past Sunday, Aug. 24, the Kansas Highway Patrol investigated a collision outside of Overbrook on US-56 Highway, milepost 409, between Croco Road and Paulen Road, in Osage County. It is believed that a vehicle struck and killed a pedestrian who was walking on US-56 Highway. The collision occurred at approximately 5:05 a.m. on Sunday.

Sand Hills State Park Open for Reservations

Visitors can now reserve a campsite at Sand Hills State Park, located just north of Hutchinson, two miles east of the K-61/56th Street intersection. The park is a 1,123 acre natural area of sand dunes, grasslands, wetlands, and woodlands. It features 64 utility sites – 44 sites have water, sewer, and electricity and 20 sites have only water and sewer. All sites have 50-amp service. Twenty sites have concrete pads and camping areas to assist campers with disabilities, and 14 of the sites have horse pens. Interested Barton County citizens are invited to review the Final Draft of the Region E Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan until September 4, 2014. Comments on the document are welcomed and individuals should go to the Barton County website to view the proposed plan. Participation by citizens is an important element in the development of emergency plan development.

​Auditions announced for musical ‘A Christmas Carol’

The Barton Community College music department will host auditions for its holiday musical, the Charles Dickens classic, "A Christmas Carol," at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 7 and 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 8 for adults. There will be a separate audition for children only on Sunday, Sept. 7 at 1 p.m. Actors of all ages are encouraged to audition. The total cast number will be around 35.

Personnel on BCC agenda

The Barton Community College Board of Trustees will discuss personnel when it meets at 4 p.m. Thursday in room F-30, on the lower level of the Fine Arts Building. An executive session is on the agenda for discussion of personnel, and the hiring of several individuals for the Barton County campus is on the consent agenda, as well as a part-time military programs instructor. BCC has classrooms at Fort Riley and Fort Leavenworth.
