Commission to hold Monday morning meeting

The Barton County Commission will meet at 9 a.m. Monday at the Barton County Courthouse, 1400 Main in Great Bend. The agenda includes a report on the Built Environment Conference held recently in Wichita, an appointment to the Memorial Parks Advisory Committee, change in memorial park regulations, a revision of the landfill rates and a tax sale update.

Racing bikes stolen

Two racing motorcycles with a combined value of $11,525 were stolen last week from the 700 block of Washington St. in Great Bend, Sheriff Brian Bellendir said. The Sept. 26 theft is featured this week by Crime Stoppers.

Date changed for square dance lessons

The date for Country Square Dance Lessons has been changed to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday at the First Presbyterian Church on the corner of 24th and Washington. There will be no charge for the first class for those who want to learn social "mixer" dancing. High school, college, young couples and adults are welcome.

'Cooking Vegetarian' is program topic

The Great Bend Recreation Commission will host a free Stop 'N Learn Session titled "Cooking Vegetarian" from noon to 1 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 2, at the Great Bend Recreation Center, 1214 Stone St. Presenter Gloria Hernandez will show how to cook vegetarian dishes which include cheese, eggs and milk. Each participant will make a veggie spring roll.

GBHS Debate Squad places 3rd at first tournament

On Saturday the GBHS debate squad placed 3rd at Valley Center against 16 schools and 66 teams. In the novice division the team of Kylynn Keeler and Hadley Murphy placed 4th with a 4/1 win/loss record. Keeler said "I am really proud of everyone that competed. It was a lot of fun!" Also in the novice division the team of Uriel Renteria and Sara Allen had a 3/2 win/loss record that contributed to the sweepstakes placing.
