Holiday Cookie Contest raises more than $350 for County Food Bank

Icy weather hampered involvement in the 7th Annual Great Bend Holiday Cookie Contest, held Nov. 28. Still, the annual sweet-treat contest went on as scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. during Small Business Saturday in downtown Great Bend. Rosewood Furniture Gallery supplied participants with decorative boxes, a list of cookie contest businesses and a voting bracelet.

House fire occurs in Barton County

Firefighters respond to a structure fire at 20 SE 40 Ave., late Tuesday morning. Upon arrival responders saw smoke coming from the residence. There was structural damage and damage to the living-room area. No one was hurt in the fire. The cause is still under investigation by the Great Bend Fire Department and the Kansas Fire Marshal. The GBFD was assisted by the Ellinwood Fire Department and the Barton County Sheriff's Office.

Hirsh found guilty of assault and battery

Darrin Hirsh was taken to the Barton County Jail on Tuesday afternoon, after being found guilty of one count of aggravated assault, two counts of criminal threat and one count of domestic battery, all involving an altercation on March 12, 2013, with Candice Hirsh, who was his wife at the time. The jurors also ruled that each of these crimes was an act of domestic violence.
