Quilts of Valor March 2017

Golden Plains Quilts of Valor awarded quilts to 15 veterans on Friday, March 31 at the American Legion Post 180 in Great Bend. The group awarded its 300th Quilt of Valor that night, and then one more for a total of 301.

Baker trial on hold, civil suit settled

The jury trial for the man charged with involuntary manslaughter in the 2014 deaths of Shawn and Danielle Schellenger has been delayed. Meanwhile, a civil suit against the defendant, Great Bend landscaper William Howard Baker, has been settled, according to records in Barton County District Court.

Veterans service rep coming to Kansas Works Center

A Veterans Service Representative from the Kansas Commission on Veterans' Affairs will be at the Great Bend Kansas Works Center at 1025 Main Street from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 6, to assist veterans and their families in applying for VA benefits. Area veterans are encouraged to inquire and see if their health condition is linked to their time in service. The Kansas Commission on Veterans' Affairs is a state agency that provides free assistance to veterans and their families with veterans' benefits. Call 785-625-8532 for more information.

Woman injured in garage fire

A 57-year-old woman suffered burns and smoke inhalation from a fire inside a garage Friday afternoon, according to a report from the Great Bend Fire Department. She was identified only as the daughter of Howard H. Barry, Great Bend.

A program that helps keep at-risk students in school now and helps them find jobs after graduation is coming to Great Bend USD 428 this fall.

Easter fun planned Saturday

Children can experience Easter fun from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Great Bend Public Library, 1409 Williams St. Rosewood Miracle Workers Aktion Club is coordinating the "Hippity Hop Easter Basket Workshop." Children get to create their own Easter baskets, decorating Easter eggs for the baskets. They also can participate in other fun activities, like coloring Easter pages.

Thexton named USD 428 Superintendent

Khris Thexton will become the next superintendent of Great Bend USD 428, effective July 1. The school board met Thursday and voted unanimously to promote the assistant superintendent to the key position.
