Reed: Proposal won't save money

Great Bend Superintendent Brad Reed said a proposal in the Kansas Legislature to consolidate more school districts would not save money but could hurt the quality of education in some districts. USD 428 representatives' recent trip to Topeka was discussed at Thursday's mid-month school board meeting.

Superintendents speak out

There was no shortage of information presented at the Hoisington Chamber of Commerce coffee Thursday morning. USD 431 Hoisington Superintendent Bill Lowry's legislative report included news about a bill that many have expressed concern over since the state legislature resumed session earlier this month. Earlier in the week, the Kansas Association of School Boards sent out an alert to members about three bills, one of which could completely change the face of public education in Barton County

Bike, pedestrian master plan meeting canceled

The public presentation of the Barton County bike/pedestrian master plan, scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 2, at Kansas Wetlands Education Center, has been canceled to due forecasted inclement weather. The plan will soon be available on the Golden Belt Community Foundation website at goldenbeltcf.org.

New EduKan director adds transparency

A "significant deficiency" was found during the Fiscal Year 2015 audit for EduKan, the online education consortium that serves six western Kansas community colleges. However, a management letter from the auditors confirms that problems in 2015 ended after Dr. Adam John took over as chief executive officer last summer.

Spray family gets naming rights to BCC weight room

The weight room at Barton Community College's Kirkman building has been refurbished and major equipment upgrades are taking place, thanks to the generosity of the Kip and Kelly Spray family. On Tuesday, the BCC Board of Trustees officially renamed that portion of the building the Kip and Kelly Spray Family Strength Training Center.

New ambulance approved by Hoisington City Council

Randy Miller, director of the City of Hoisington's electricity distribution department, was honored at the City Council meeting Monday night for his 32 years of service to the city. Mayor Clayton Williamson formally thanked him, and presented him with a plaque. Miller will retire at the end of the week, and it was announced the public is invited to a reception in his honor Friday afternoon at the council chamber from 2 to 4 p.m.
