Use-of-Force Simulator trains officers

The Barton Community College service area will be a safer place thanks to a new tool employed by the college's criminal justice program, a Use-of-Force Simulator. The simulator puts officers in extreme situations and forces them to make split-second decisions on what type of force to apply in a given situation.

USD 428 Board of Education meeting

USD 428 Board of Education will meet at noon on April 23 at Eisenhower Elementary School, 1212 Garfield. Items on the agenda include 2013-2014 School Calendar, approval of paper bids, approval of licensed personnel resignations and licensed personnel appointments; and act on resolution to nonrenew contract on a nontenured teacher. Eisenhower Elementary School Principal, Tina Reiser, and other staff members will share information regarding the academic programs and the school improvement efforts at the school.

Planning Committee meeting moved

The Barton County Local Emergency Planning Committee will meet at 1:30 p.m. Monday, April 22, at the Barton County Health Department Conference Room, instead of at the Barton County Courthouse as was originally planned. The agenda will include discussion on Tier II Reporting Facilities in Barton County, a review of the Barton County Household Hazardous Waste program, an LEPC by-laws update and reports from members.

Rosewood Services brings world-renowned circus to Great Bend

To commemorate its 15th anniversary next month and to help raise funds for its non-profit foundation, Rosewood Services is bringing the world's largest big-top circus to Great Bend on May 16. The Carson & Barnes Circus will host two shows – one at 4:30 p.m. and the other at 7:30 p.m., at the Great Bend Expo Complex.

Senior Companions recognized for service to elderly

Jodi Bybee of Great Bend and Jackie Pritchard of Hoisington were recognized for their service to frail and disabled adults at the February 18, in-service meeting held at the Great Bend Senior Center. Bybee has served 11 years; Pritchard has been with the Program for nine years. The guest speaker at the meeting was Sandy Watches with Professional Home Health. She discussed the mandated state regulations and services provided that govern home health agencies.

State Kansas Music Educators Honor Band

Great Bend High School Junior Ben Diel was selected as eighth chair trumpet in the State Kansas Music Educators Honor 5-6A Band which will meet in Wichita Feb. 26-28. Eric Vazquez, sophomore, was named as an alternate on bass clarinet, which is also a big achievement. The students did a live audition in January and received notification of their placement. They will rehearse for two and one-half days before presenting the concert on Saturday afternoon in Century II Convention Hall. GBHS Speech Team places 4th

At the Medicine Lodge Speech Tournament on Feb. 12, the Great Bend High School Speech Team qualified three more events to state. Becca Kay qualified to state in Original Oration by placing 2nd in the event. Hadley Murphy qualified in both Original Oration and Serious Solo Acting by placing 1st in both of the events. Sara Allen placed 6th in Original Oration and Becca Kay placed 5th Serious Solo Acting. "The team only brought four students and still placed 4th overall in sweepstakes out of 13 schools which is very impressive." stated GBHS speech coach Barbara Watson.
