‘Santas Around The World’ Exhibit Now Open Through December 20

Twenty-three life sized Santas, representing countries and regions from around the world, appear in a winter wonderland of lighted trees and festive holiday décor in downtown Great Bend. The exhibit, known as "Santas Around the World," is now open to the public at 1223 Main Street.

​Ice causes injuries on Ellsworth County roads

The Kansas Highway Patrol responded to several injury accidents on icy roads in Ellsworth County over the extended holiday weekend. All of the people involved were wearing safety restraints.

Santa's Workshop, which was scheduled for Monday, Nov. 30, has been postponed due to weather. It will be held Monday, Dec. 7, from 6-8 p.m. in the Great Bend Municipal Auditorium.

The TBC Support Group meeting scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1 has been canceled. The meeting is rescheduled for Tuesday Dec. 8, 2 p.m. Christmas festivities scheduled for this week will be held at that time.

Kansas Reads to Preschoolers event

Kansas Reads to Preschoolers is an annual event promoting reading to children under the age of five. Parents, librarians, and caregivers are encouraged to read the chosen title during November. This program is sponsored by the State Library of Kansas. The book selected for this year is "Is Your Mama a Llama?" by Deborah Guarino. Cover, illustrated by Steven Kellogg.

Where Have all the Ducks Gone?

We are in a duck vortex right now. There are essentially NO ducks in the Bottoms. We had a nice teal season and early duck season. I never cease to be amazed at the number of "out of state" tags and the volume and quality of gear, boats, dogs and vehicles these dedicated duck hunters bring to our marsh. Many times I see more tags from states other than Kansas. I attribute that to the wisdom of our local sportsmen who know when the resident ducks have become educated or gone south. Holiday parade cancelled

While Santa and his reindeer would have no problem getting around Great Bend on Saturday, city officials opted to err on the side of caution in consideration of those navigating the streets without the help of magic this weekend. Great Bend was included in a winter weather advisory issued by the National Weather Service, warning of increased ice accumulations and slick roads, as well as increased ice accumulations on trees and power lines.

Moran discusses Choice Act and refugees at Larned town hall

KHP reports injury accidents, one fatal

Icy roads contributed to injury accidents in central Kansas, including a fatal rollover Thanksgiving Day in Hodgeman County. Kansas Highway Patrol responded to that accident, and to an injury accident Thursday in Ness County. There was also an injury accident Friday in Russell County.

​Touched by Cancer members to celebrate Christmas

Touched by Cancer support group will meet at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1, at the Heartland Cancer Center, 204 Cleveland, Great Bend. Third and fourth graders from Jefferson Elementary school will spread some Christmas cheer by singing carols to the group, HCC patients, caregivers and staff. Candy canes will be distributed to all.
