Update on jury trial

Darrin Hirsh trial continues. Defense called its first witness shortly after 2 p.m. Friday. The jury was sent home for the weekend around 5:10 p.m. and will return at 8:15 a.m. Monday, Dec. 21.

Jobless rate takes dip

TOPEKA – The labor force in Kansas swelled in November, forcing down the state's November seasonally adjusted unemployment rate to 4.0 percent,a decline from 4.1 percent in October and decreased from 4.2 percent in November 2014, the Kansas Department of Labor reported this week.

City Council meets Monday night

The Great Bend City Council will meet at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the City Office, 1209 Williams. The agenda includes a recognition of the D.A.R.E. essay winners, a court costs ordinance and a report from Community Coordinator Christina Hayes.

Commission to hold Monday morning meeting

The Barton County Commission will meet at 9 a.m. Monday at the Barton County Courthouse, 1400 Main in Great Bend. The agenda includes recognizing retiring County Engineer Clark Rusco, the replacement of a damaged Road and Bridge Department truck, the sale of two Road and Bridge trucks, and appointments to the Local Emergency Planning Committee and the Center for Counseling and Consultation Governing Board.

Madrigal music

Choir members of the Great Bend High School Madrigals sing at the Great Bend Noon Kiwanis Club meeting, Wednesday at Perkins restaurant. They have been performing once or twice a day for most of this month, vocal instructor Susan Stambaugh said. Their final public appearance of the year was set for Thursday. The program featured seasonal music, including a dance number choreographed by the students. They ended with the Madrigals' signature song, "Reach out and Touch," performed with sign language.

Hoisington City Council meeting

Changes to the city's snow and ice removal policy topped the list of new business to be discussed at the Hoisington City Council meeting Monday night. City Manager Jonathan Mitchell proposed an amended policy following the Thanksgiving weekend ice event that the city was late to respond to because it was not adequately prepared.

New signage will change speeds on US-281

Between Monday, Dec. 21 and Thursday, Dec. 24, the Kansas Department of Transportation will begin to upgrade/replace road signage and change posted speed limits in Barton County. The signing enhancement project is scheduled to be completed by early January, depending on delays due to adverse weather conditions.

Property tax deadline looming

The deadline for property owners to pay their taxes for the first half of the year is normally Dec. 20. However, this year that falls on Sunday so taxpayers have until the end of the day Monday, Dec. 21, Barton County Treasurer Kevin Wondra said.
