Extension district, occupancy on commission agenda

A resolution to approve the proposed extension district, combining the Barton County KSU Extension Council with the Ellis County Extension Council, is on the agenda for the next Barton County Commission meeting. The meeting is set for 9 a.m. Monday, Nov. 28, in Room 106 of the Barton County Courthouse.

Barton to host holiday vocal and instrumental concert

Christmas music is something almost everyone can relate to and often creates a nostalgic glimpse into childhood memories. The Barton Community College music department will take its audience down memory lane and beyond as it hosts its Holiday Variety Show at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 5 in the Fine Arts Auditorium.

Woodcarver to present Nov. 28 program at Historical Society

Local woodcarver Barry Bowers will present a program when the Barton County Historical Society meets at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 28. The program will feature his caricature style carvings.

Community Concert offers Musical Monday fundraiser

The Golden Belt Community Concert Association will host Musical Monday for Giving Tuesday. Musical Monday is a come-and-go event set for 7-9 p.m. Nov. 28 at the Best Western Angus Inn Courtyard giving supporters of the concert association an opportunity to donate to the GBCCA Endowment. These financial gifts will help continue the association's heritage of offering quality, diverse musical performances to residents of Barton County and the surrounding area.

Cookie Contest sure to be fun and festive

Great Bend shoppers have the opportunity to participate in a fun event this Saturday as they visit local retail stores and support Small Business Saturday. The eighth annual Great Bend Cookie Contest is being held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., allowing people to sample cookies from 15 participating business locations and vote for the best cookies in town.

BCC theater dept. to host Original Playwright Series

The theater department at Barton Community College is calling for original plays from the community for its Original Playwright Series. Three of the submitted plays will be chosen to be performed on April 27, 2017, in the Fine Arts Auditorium. Playwrights have until Feb. 1 to submit their plays.

Commodities available Monday

Commodities will be distributed from 5-6 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 28, at 1305 Patton Road. Recipients must bring two forms of identification, such as a driver's license and utility bill showing their address.

Pawnee Co. Health Department is No. 1

OVERLAND PARK - The Kansas Association of Local Health Departments (KALHD) recognized Pawnee County Health Department as the 2016 Local Health Department of the Year during the awards luncheon of the 41st Kansas Association of Counties annual conference held in Overland Park Nov. 15-17. Robin Rziha, Pawnee County Health Department administrator, accepted the award presented by Michele Ponce, KALHD Executive Director, and Dan Woydziak, KAC President.

There should be a name for the six-day period that starts on the fourth Thursday of November. After all, five of the days are already tagged: Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, Cyber Monday and now Giving Tuesday. (Sunday is still Sunday, thank goodness.)
