Zoo news: Make reservations for Wine in the Wild

Reservations are being taken for Wine in the Wild, hosted by the Great Bend Zoological Society and presented by Nex-Tech and the City of Great Bend. This fundraiser will take place from 5-8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at the Great Bend-Brit Spaugh Zoo.

Barton County Health Department flu shots begin

Barton County Health Department will begin administering vaccines to prevent influenza for area residents on Monday, Sept. 19, during regular business hours on a walk-in basis. Flu vaccine available at the health department this year protects against four strains of influenza including:

County OKs new radio towers

Midwest Energy was given the go-ahead Monday morning to proceed with a plan to bolster its communications after the Barton County Commission approved conditional use permits allowing the construction of three radio towers.

Planning commission stays busy

According to Barton County Environmental Manager Judy Goreham, there have been six public hearings for various zoning-related issues over the summer months, with another one coming up in September.

More rain likely this week

Around Great Bend, residents reported rainfall amounts of anywhere from 2.5 to 6 inches on Monday. Several people reported getting about 3 inches of rain between 4:30 and 6 p.m.

Great Bend and Barton County under flood warning Monday evening

The drive home for many in Great Bend Monday evening was a wet one. At 4:38 p.m., Barton County Dispatch reported the National Weather Service in Wichita had issued a flood warning for Barton County until 8:30 p.m. Heavy rain had resulted in one inch in the 30 minutes prior to the report. Flooding occured from 10th and Washington to 8th and Washington. Stranded vehicles were reported at various locations throughout the city. Drivers calling into dispatch were advised they would be helped as help was available.
