Man found guilty in trial

LARNED - A Larned man who threatened to choke his mother to death was found guilty of felony criminal threat and misdemeanor disorderly conduct, Tuesday in Pawnee County District Court.

BCSO responds to fatality crash

Barton County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a two-vehicle fatality crash at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of SE 40 Ave (Airport Road) and 4th Street west of Great Bend, Sheriff Brian Bellendir said.

BCC aims for no mill levy increase

The Barton Community College Board of Trustees won't need a mill levy increase get more money from local taxpayers next year. At the board study session held Tuesday, Vice President of Administration Mark Dean explained that valuations are up, especially for oil. Last year's tax rate of 33.26 mills raised $8.03 million, but this year an estimated rate of 33.15 mills could raise $8.53 million.

Council hears allegations of ‘unethical’ conduct

According to Great Bend Police Chief Cliff Couch, there is a misconception surrounding his recent run-ins with City Administrator Howard Partington and other city officials. It is more than an employment dispute, he said, adding he's feels he's been treated inappropriately by Partington and that he is "desperately trying to blow the whistle about unethical conduct occurring at City Hall."

City Council OKs budget

Following a three-and-a-half-hour work session Monday night, the Great Bend City Council approved publishing the city's budget for 2018. The public budget hearing is set for 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 21, prior to the council's regular meeting in the council chambers at City Hall.

County hires county works director

Long-time Barton County Road and Bridge Director Dale Phillips retired at the end of June. On Monday, the County Commission appointed the man to take his place.

Commission renews agreement with county counselor

Renewing the contract with Ellsworth attorney Carey Hipp as Barton County's legal counselor was in the best interest of the county, the County Commissioner decided Monday morning. This came despite a plea from County Attorney Amy Mellor, who caught most on the commission off guard when she attended the meeting asking to move the counselor's job to her office and asking for more departmental resources.

Fair wraps up Sunday

Sunday is the final day of the Barton County Fair, not counting the all-day tear down, cleanup and storage that will take place Monday at the Expo Complex. The commercial exhibits cleared out of Expo I Saturday evening, making room for the annual 4-H BBQ, opening Sunday morning at 11:30.
