GBHS speech team wins 12 medals

The Great Bend Forensics/Speech team competed at the Kinsley Speech Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 28. Five GBHS speech students competed and all placed. They competed in 13 events and placed in 12.

Gilliam convicted of indecent liberties

Jimmy Wayne Gilliam, Great Bend, appeared in Barton County District Court on Friday, Jan. 27, and, following his plea, was convicted of aggravated indecent liberties with a child.

Great Bend area artists featured at Hays

HAYS - Great Bend area artists are featured at an exhibition opening Friday, Feb. 3, at the Hays Arts Center. The exhibit, "Four Painters & Three Potters," features works by Krystall Barnes, Cynthia Collier-Wilson, Bambi Freeman, Mark Freeman, Carol Long, Karen Shaner and Bev Simonson.

Boys State of Kansas Leadership Academy taking applications for 2017 session

The American Legion Boys State of Kansas Leadership Academy is now taking applications for its 2017 session. The event, which will be in its 80th year, will be held June 4, through June 9, at Kansas State University in Manhattan.

New bulk mailer for valuation notices found

Noting it is cheaper to contract the work out, the Barton County Commission Monday morning approved hiring an Arizona company to handle the bulk mailing of the county's tax valuation notices.

2017 Miss Barton County and Miss Golden Belt pageant features nine

Saturday night marked the fifth in an annual tradition that is bringing back an appreciation for talent, fitness and style of young women in the Golden Belt area. The 2017 Miss Barton County and Miss Golden Belt Scholarship Pageant was held at the Great Bend High School auditorium, and features four contestants for Miss Barton county, and five for Miss Golden Belt.

Turkey hunt scheduled for youth and disabled hunters at Kanopolis Lake

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Kanopolis Lake will host its 2nd annual youth and disabled turkey hunt Saturday, April 1. This event allows hunters self-guided access to public lands managed by the Corps of Engineers including refuge and park areas usually closed to hunting.

Golden Belt Community Foundation accepting grant applications for March 1

Golden Belt Community Foundation invites proposals for its upcoming competitive grant cycle. Applications now are being accepted from qualified 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations and public institutions, including schools, government entities, and clubs and civic/community organizations in Barton, Pawnee, Rush, and Stafford counties. Funds are available primarily for the health and well-being of youth; however, limited funds are available in many other categories. Detailed grant guidelines can be found online.
