Council declares trailer house unsafe, sets hearing

The Great Bend City Council Monday night agreed with the findings of Building Inspector Lee Schneider and Code Enforcement Officer Stuart Baker that a dilapidated trailer house at 26 Hickory St. is unsafe and dangerous and set a public hearing for 7:30 p.m. March 21, prior to the City Council meeting at City Hall to discuss the matter.

City hires new CVB Director Emily Goad

City of Great Bend Community Coordinator Christina Hayes announced during the City Council meeting Monday that a new Convention and Visitors Bureau Director has been hired. Emily Goad, a Great Bend native, takes the reins when the new CVB office opens this month in the Great Bend Events Center.

Ellinwood Chamber welcomes three new board members

Three new board member nominees of the Ellinwood Chamber of Commerce were announced Master of Ceremonies Rob Dove Saturday night at the 2016 Ellinwood Chamber Banquet and annual board meeting. Dove also announced that Chamber member Lloyd Kurtz, retired, is the organization's nominee for the Ellinwood Rotary Club's Citizen of the Year award to be presented at the annual banquet Feb. 11.

Winter weather advisory issued for Barton County

WICHITA - A winter storm warning for Barton County was changed to a winter weather advisory Monday morning by the National Weather Service in Wichita. Snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches are possible. The winter weather advisory for hazardous winter weather is in effect from 6 p.m. Monday to 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Wetland Explorer: Searching for Fun

Oh, the scavenger hunt – many of us have fond memories of days at summer camps, racing around with your team, trying to find everything on your list. It's almost a traditional part of American childhood. We do our fair share of scavenger hunts here at the Kansas Wetlands Education Center, and it never fails to amaze us how excited kids are by the simple act of checking off items from a list. From the KWEC exhibit hall to our nature trail, we're always ready to kick off a scavenger hunt.

Boys Scouts ready for annual dinner

The Boy Scouts Troop and Pack 184 have made plenty of noodles for the 45th annual Chili and Chicken Noodle Soup Dinner. The meal featuring homemade soup and desserts will be served by Scouts from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 7, at the Elks Lodge, located at 12th and Kansas Ave. in Great Bend. Use the 12th St. entrance.

​Elks Lodge taking reservations for Valentine’s Dinner

The Elks Lodge in Great Bend is taking reservations for its Valentine's Dinner. It will be served from 6-8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, at the Elks, 1120 Kansas Ave. Members and guests are welcome. Cost is $15 per person for rib-eye steak, baked potato, salad, dinner roll, beverage and dessert.
