Quilts of Valor June 2017

Twelve veterans were presented with Quilts of Valor on June 30 at the Great Bend American Legion Post 180. Quilts were presented by the Golden Plains Quilts of Valor. Various volunteers make the quilt tops, and the quilting is done by Barton County Attorney Amy Schartz Mellor.

Strike it rich

The long-awaited opening of the 2017 Barton County Fair is upon us. Starting at 8 a.m. Wednesday, July 5, people will begin checking in livestock and exhibits at the Expo Complex west of Great Bend. Soon the fun will start.

New county zoning regs complete

Barton County Environmental Manager Judy Goreham has completed the most recent update to the county Zoning Regulations Version II which included provisions for commercial solar facilities, commercial agricultural product storage facilities and a new definition for "structures," the County Commission was told Monday morning.

Marshall announces July Listening Tour

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Roger Marshall will begin his July Listening Tour on Thursday, July 6. Constituents are encouraged to attend and ask questions. This will make 35 listening tour stops this year, separate from other public events attended.

USD 428 ends Fiscal Year

Thursday morning was Khris Thexton's final Board of Education meeting as interim superintendent of Great Bend USD 428. His appointment to the superintendent's position became official on Saturday.

County offices to close for July 4

Barton County business offices, the Health Department, the Records Division of the Sheriff's Office and the landfill will be closed on Tuesday for the Independence Day Holiday7. Emergency services will be in normal operation on that day.

Great Bend USD 428 administrators, Tim Friess, Great Bend High School principal; Christie Gerdes, Barton County Special Services director; Phil Heeke, Park School principal; and Daryl Moore, GBHS assistant principal; work as a team to lift a hula hoop with two fingers as they participate in Mandt training Wednesday morning at the District Education Center. The Mandt system is designed to safely address the behavior of students in difficult situations.
