Time to remember

Memorial Day is a time to remember the fallen who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country, this remembrance will happen here in Great Bend at 10 a.m. on Monday as people will gather at Veterans Circle in the Great Bend Cemetery to pay their respects.

Memorial Day travel at highest level since 2005

TOPEKA - The West North Central Region, of which Kansas is a part, will see more than 3.3 million people taking Memorial Day weekend trips of 50 miles or longer, a 2.1 percent increase over 2016 and the largest number of travelers since 2005, according to American Automobile Association.

Wetlands Waterpark opens Saturday

Great Bend's Wetlands Waterpark at 2303 Main is scheduled to open Saturday, May 27. The aquatic center will be open from 12:30-5:30 p.m. daily when there are no weather hazards and the forecasted high temperature is 75 degrees Fahrenheit or higher.

BCC to offer free citizenship classes

Barton Community College will offer free citizenship classes starting June 1 at the Center for Adult Education, 1025 Main, Great Bend. Classes will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays and Thursdays in room 208.

More information for tornado victims offered

Barton County residents are moving forward in an effort to clean up and rebuild following the tornado of May 16. A tabulation of storm damage dollar amounts is continuing, but as of today damage amounts are short of the threshold needed for a federal disaster declaration through the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Barton County Emergency Manager Amy Miller said.

Number of county tax sale properties dwindling

The Count Treasurer's Office is receiving payments for properties included in this year's tax sale and there are currently 66 properties, said County Treasurer Kevin Wondra. Since the properties have now been filed with the court, homeowners are required to pay the abstract and court fees of $170 to redeem the property.

Juvenile Justice budget remains unchanged

The Barton County Commission Monday morning approved the 20th Judicial District Juvenile Services 2018 fiscal year budget. The $635,847.82 budget includes $33,157.82 for prevention and $602,690 for graduated sanctions, Director Marissa Woodmansee said.

Police letters blame pay for understaffing

Letters to Great Bend City Council members and/or city officials from the local Fraternal Order of Police chapter express concern over staffing shortages within the Great Bend Police Department, blaming this on salaries that fail to compete with other cities. Members are frustrated with a lack of response, officer moral, and worry about the safety of the community.

Members of the Great Bend American Legion Unit 180 and Auxiliary invite the public to honor our nation's fallen warriors and contribute to the continuing needs of veterans by wearing a red poppy for Memorial Day. Handmade crepe paper poppies will be available for a donation.
