GBRH welcomes New Year's baby

Each year, the staff at Great Bend Regional Hospital wait anxiously to see which expecting mother will deliver the first baby of the new year. For 2016, the first baby was born over the weekend to Jarret and Katie Knieling of Rush Center. Their new daughter, Remi Mae Knieling, was born at 1:50 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 2, weighing 8 pounds 5 ounces and measuring 20 inches long.

Drugs found in three Hoisington homes

HOISINGTON - The Hoisington Police Department ended 2015 and started 2016 by executing search warrants for narcotics. Warrants served on three different residences resulted in multiple arrests over the last two weeks, and the seizure of suspected drugs and paraphernalia.

USD 428 schools may add behavior lessons

Great Bend USD 428 students may be learning more than reading and writing in 2016. Assistant Superintendent John Popp said administrators plan to present a district-wide curriculum for social and emotional character development for the school board's approval in the coming months.

Incomplete voter registrations cleared from the books

Two years ago the Barton County Clerk's office reported the registrations of more than 300 potential voters were on hold. This year, that number has been greatly reduced to thanks to a change in the law, according to Darin DeWitt, voter registration clerk in the Barton County Clerk's Office.

The Barton County Commission will meet at 9 a.m. Monday at the Barton County Courthouse, 1400 Main in Great Bend. The agenda includes a Kansas Asphalt Paving Association award, the designation of officials depositories, the Kansas Association of Counties membership and appointments to the The Center for Counseling and Consultation Board.

Baker trial date set; civil case filed

William Howard Baker, 60, will stand trial for the August 2014 vehicular deaths of a Reno County couple in Great Bend. Shawn Schellenger, 27, and his wife Danielle Schellenger, 33, where riding a motorcycle on Aug. 16, 2014, when the trailer Baker was towing came loose from his pickup and crossed into their lane on West 10th Street in Great Bend. Both died as a result of injuries sustained in the accident.
