Tom Holmes has been a staple at Great Bend City Council meetings of late. After the departure of the city sanitarian, it fell to him as the assistant to present trashy and run-down properties for abatement.
The Barton County Landfill currently has a building on-site that is used for scale operations, office space, employee training and includes a shop. However, it is showing its age, Solid Waste Director Phil Hathcock told the County Commission Monday morning.
This week's Chamber of Commerce Coffee will be hosted by local author Darcy Leech at the Chamber Board Room at 9:30 a.m., Thursday. Host will be Cindy Parr with greeters Pete Schartz and Kevin Sundahl. Coffee, refreshments and door prizes will be available.
A non-injury accident was reported at 2:37 a.m. Friday in the 1400 block of 11th St. This was followed by a Great Bend Police Department pursuit. Jerome Sisk Jr., Great Bend, was arrested in the 1500 block of 11th St. He was booked into the Barton County Jail on charges of felony flee and elude, obstruction and possession of methamphetamine. He also had an outstanding Sedgwick County warrant. Bond was set at $10,000.
A Great Bend man was injured Monday morning when the motorcycle he was driving struck a dog in South Hoisington. Sheriff Brian Bellendir said the man's injuries were not life-threatening and the dog ran away.
The Prairie Godmothers group will hold its summer social event, the Build-A-Bag Beach Party, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the Best Western Angus Inn Courtyard, 2920 10th St. This is a come-and-go event but there will be a program at 12:30 p.m. There will be free food and socializing for all who are members or interested in the group's mission, "Women Helping Women."
The Touched By Cancer Support Group will hold a sharing meeting at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 19, at the Heartland Cancer Center. There will be a "How to Beat the Heat" activity. The meetings are open to everyone currently fighting the disease, cancer survivors or families and friends of those involved in all phases of the illness.
