Quilts of Valor February 2017

Handmade quilts were presented to 10 area veterans on Friday, Feb. 24, at the American Legion Post 180 in Great Bend. They were made by the Golden Plains Quilts of Valor volunteers. The next presentations will be made at 6:45 p.m. on March 31 at the post, 1011 Kansas Ave.

Hoisington youth celebrates birthday by giving

HOISINGTON - Jaci Morris celebrated her seventh birthday by giving instead of receiving. Her wish for her birthday was that no one bring gifts to her party. Instead, guests were asked to simply bring a donation for Kans for Kids.

Closing of Larned Juvenile Correctional Facility both emotional and hopeful

LARNED - The atmosphere was like both a reunion and a wake. There were hugs, tears, and emotional greetings between old friends. Men and women stood side by side, some holding back tears, but all with a sense of hopefulness Friday afternoon as staff of the Larned Juvenile Correctional Facility gathered for the closing ceremony of the facility. The facility which was dedicated in 2003 and could hold 128 youth is now permanently closed.

Advanced grant writing workshop coming to Great Bend

Golden Belt Community Foundation will be hosting a one-day advanced grant writing workshop March 22, at the Holiday Inn Express, 3821 10th Street in Great Bend. This workshop is available to area non-profit organizations who wish to learn more advanced grant writing skills needed to successfully submit and obtain grants.

Reading readiness focus as Roosevelt Elementary students celebrate Seuss’ birthday

HOISINGTON - USD 431 Superintendent Bill Lowry and City Councilwoman Karen Van Brimmer, board members of United Way of Central Kansas, shared their love of reading with Hoisington preschoolers Thursday morning. Each donned a familiar red and white striped hat in honor of Dr. Seuss' birthday, and read versions of two popular young reader books, "The Little Engine that Could" and "The Wheels on the Bus."

Hoisington council says ‘status quo’ will go

HOISINGTON - City Manager Jonathan Mitchell recapped the recent informational meeting concerning the proposed new fire district. While as of yet there hasn't been any strong affirmation from the outlying townships and the City of Susank about moving forward, Hoisington Volunteer Fire Department Chief Jerry Stricker will be following up with individuals over the next week, he said.

City of Hoisington to honor driving range arrangement

HOISINGTON - Since the announcement that the Lovett family will be moving in pursuit of a new employment opportunity, City Manager Jonathan Mitchell reported he has been approached by a local party who would like to purchase the driving range currently operated by the Lovetts. The current arrangement with the city includes a minimal lease in exchange for paying the taxes and keeping the property mown. Mitchell asked the council Monday night if they were willing to continue the arrangement, or even possibly sell the land to the interested party.

Suspect named in yoga studio shooting

The suspect in the drive-by shooting that took place at Yoga Central Studio at 6003 10th St. on Feb. 10 was arrested by the Rush County Sheriff's Department on Feb. 28, Great Bend Police Chief Couch said.

BCC students arrested on drug charges

Two Barton Community College students were arrested after the Great Bend Police Department executed a search warrant at 4:40 p.m. at 1123 Stone St. Apartment A on Wednesday. The search warrant was based on information indicating that drugs were being sold from this location, Police Chief Couch said.
