Immunizations pay off for Ellinwood family

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment Immunization Program is continuing its Immunize and Win a Prize program, and this year there was a winner from Ellinwood, the Barton County Health Department announced.

U.S. Supreme Court to hear appeal in Barton County murders

TOPEKA - The vacating of the death penalty for the man convicted in a pair of 2004 Barton County murders will be argued before the U.S. Supreme Court which it next convenes in October, according to information on the high court's website.

KDHE immunization program

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) Immunization Program is continuing its successful 'Immunize and Win a Prize,' program. This statewide campaign provides prizes to families who have their children timely immunized. All Kansas children are eligible. However, to qualify, the children must receive their immunizations from a Vaccines For Children (VFC) provider.

Drug Enforcement Operation conducted in Ellinwood

ELLINWOOD -- On Friday, a multi-agency drug enforcement operation was conducted in the city of Ellinwood at 515 S, Bismark. Police officers from Great Bend and Ellinwood along with deputies from the Barton County sheriff's office, and special agents from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation were part of the operation. The Great Bend Police department drug detecting canine named "Kia" also responded to the scene at the request of Ellinwood.

Great Bend City Council nixes two days of fireworks

In a brief special noon meeting Monday, the Great Bend City Council rejected an amendment to the city's fireworks ordinance that would have allowed the discharge of fireworks on both Friday, July 3 and on Saturday, July 4.

County announces holiday closings for Friday

Barton County business offices, the Health Department and the Records Division of the Sheriff's Office will be closed for the Independence Day Holiday on Friday. The Landfill will be open from 8 a.m. – 11 a.m. Friday, and will be closed the remainder of the holiday weekend. Emergency services will be in normal operation on that day.
