Tim Miller named Old Bill Honoree at 35th annual Barton Foundation Auction; tickets now available

It doesn't take long before new Great Bend area residents hear the name "Tim Miller." Miller (1940-2012) was one of the area's greatest businessmen and philanthropists, and his large company Tim Miller Enterprises was honored with the 2011 Business of the Year Award by the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce.

Disc golf tourney to take place Aug. 17

The inaugural Windy Hill Disc Golf Tournament is set for Saturday, Aug. 17, at Barton Community College as a fundraiser to benefit Relay for Life of Barton County. Registration opens at 8:30 a.m. and tee-off is at 9 a.m. for the 18-hole tourney. Entry fee is $10 per person and hole sponsorships are available for $50.

Great Bend Alzheimer’s Walk

Great Bend will host an Alzheimer's Walk on Saturday, Oct. 5, with registration to begin at 1 p.m. followed by the opening ceremony at Barton County Courthouse and Jack Kilby Square. June Jaunt photo contest winners announced

Although June Jaunt was well over a month ago, it lived on as a display of photos that featured different aspects of Great Bend. Community Coordinator Christina Hayes said the June Jaunt photo contest was created for an art display but also as a promotional tool for both the City of Great Bend and the Great Bend Public Library, where the photos have been shown. Judges forms have been tabulated and on Friday officials announced the winners of the four categories.

Rosewood Riders close out in-state horse show schedule

A dozen riders from Rosewood Services participated in their final in-state horse show of the season in late July. The riders competed in the South Central Stock Horse Association (SCSHA) Horse Show at the Hutchinson State Fair Grounds July 27 and 28. The riders will close out their horse show season in mid-August at the National Snaffle Bit Association World Championship Show in Tulsa, Okla.

Panther Pride Band Camps starts Monday

Great Bend High School freshmen band members, drum majors and section leaders will meet Monday, Aug. 5 to prepare for the upcoming marching season. Drum majors and section leaders will congregate at 7:30 a.m., with freshmen needing to check out a school instrument meet at the high school at 7:45 a.m. The entire freshman band will start playing at 8 a.m. and finish at 11 a.m.

KanCare requesting household information from beneficiaries

The State of Kansas Medicaid program, KanCare, is collecting important household information from beneficiaries to meet new federal eligibility guidelines mandated by the Affordable Care Act. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment began today mailing the instructions and a data collection form in a letter envelope to about 130,000 KanCare households of beneficiaries who are parents with children and pregnant women. This mailing is not being sent to elderly and disabled KanCare beneficiaries.

Zoo news: Clyde the bear is on the mend

Just four weeks ago, things were not looking good for Clyde, the male black bear at the Great Bend Brit Spaugh Zoo. He was in poor health at the time, but after a surgery performed by Dr. Mike Malone, veterinarian to the zoo, Director Scott Gregory said he hopes Clyde will be with the zoo for many years.
