Homecoming tradition returns in style

At the Great Bend Panthers homecoming parade Friday, observers saw a return to a tradition that has taken a hiatus since 2006. While concern over predicted rain evaporated, floats representing several Fall sports teams went before the homecoming court of attendants who rolled slowly by, waving from the back seats of convertibles provided by a number of Great Bend community members.

One-vehicle crash

On Oct. 5, around 2:47 p.m., Barton County Sheriff's deputies responded to the 700 block of Northeast 20 Ave., to a reported motor vehicle accident. Officers were advised that a vehicle had rolled and was on fire.

Buildings declared ‘unsafe and dangerous’

The Great Bend City Council Monday night adopted a resolution setting 7:30 p.m. Dec. 7 as the dates for a pubic hearings for the unsafe and dangerous structure at 1318 Kansas Ave., owned by Trent Mermis, and 1324 Kansas Avenue, owned by Norma Ward.

The last B-29 hangar to be razed

The last of the World War II B-29 hangers at the Great Bend Municipal Airport has been near collapse for several years, and the recent storm just made things worse. Noting that it is a shame to see the landmark go, the Great Bend City Council Monday night authorized Stone Sand Company to raze the beleaguered historic structure.

ETERNALLY ON GUARD

In November, the Barton County Historical Society will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the dedication of "The Rifleman," the original bronze statue by noted American sculptor Frederick C. Hibbard. To the north of the Barton County Courthouse, this likeness of a young man about 19 years of age stands eternal guard in defense of the Union, rifle and bayonet at the ready.

Marsh Musings

At 5 a.m. this morning I am standing in a ranch road holding the gate while Dusty drives through with the lights off. We know this road and the barbed wire gates that are perennially so tight for no reason obvious to us that it often requires both of us to close them. We go through two gates on the adjoining ranch to get to the area on Dustys ground where we will hunt. We have been doing this for many years. Good neighbors are important.
