Each class at Lincoln Elementary School in Great Bend created an anti-bullying poster early in the school year. One urges "Donut (do not) Bully." In another poster, students' portraits were turned into superheroes. Its caption: "Stand Up for what is right, even if you are standing alone! Be your own superhero!"

Barton music students to present recital

Barton Community College will present a student recital of instrumental and vocal performances at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 4 in the Dorothy Moses Morrison Chapel, located in the Fine Arts Building, F-157. The recital is free and open to the public.

BCC students awarded at juried art exhibit

Barton art students received recognition at this year's Barton Student Exhibition at the Shafer Gallery on April 21. This exhibit will run through May 12. Those interested in experiencing the art can visit the Shafer Gallery 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Saturday. The reception included an awards ceremony where cash awards were handed out for each category. The awards were donated by The Credit Union of America in Great Bend, Karen and Dale Shaner, Don and Barbara Beahm, The Great Bend Tribune, Eagle Communications, Bob Feldt, Kent Weltmer and Maureen Leahy.

Camp Hope 5K canceled

Sunday's 5K walk/run for Camp Hope at Barton Community College has been canceled due to weather challenges. Sponsors at BCC's Community Service Organization and Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society announced that registration fees will be returned or shirts and bags will be delivered or mailed. Sponsors are selling shirts for $10, which will be donated to Camp Hope.

Bid awarded for Field House HVAC

A Garden City firm, Tantro Plumbing, was awarded the contract for the heating, ventilation and air conditioning renovation at the Great Bend High School Field House. The school board met Thursday at Lincoln Elementary School and approved Tantro's low bid of $321,967.

College sees big savings with Canvas system

A new learning management system for online courses at Barton Community College will cost at least $300,000 less than the current system while providing a better product, college trustees were told Tuesday. After hearing a detailed report on the Canvas services, the board approved a one-year contract for $82,954.

Endowment Concert raises funds for scholarships

The Barton Music Department awards 11 scholarships every year at about $1,000 each and 20 performance awards for non-music major students, which enables them to participate in ensembles. This could not be done without the community's support of the annual Music Endowment Concert, which is set for 7:30 p.m. Monday, May 1 in the Fine Arts Auditorium.
