USD 428 ends Fiscal Year

Thursday morning was Khris Thexton's final Board of Education meeting as interim superintendent of Great Bend USD 428. His appointment to the superintendent's position became official on Saturday.

County offices to close for July 4

Barton County business offices, the Health Department, the Records Division of the Sheriff's Office and the landfill will be closed on Tuesday for the Independence Day Holiday7. Emergency services will be in normal operation on that day.

US-50 asphalt overlay from Kinsley to Edwards/Stafford county line to begin

Starting this week, the Kansas Department of Transportation will begin construction of a 23-mile asphalt mill and overlay surfacing project on US-50 Highway in Edwards County, beginning at the west city limits of Kinsley east to the Edwards/Stafford county line.

KWEC’s ‘Gifts from the Garden’ series continues

The next "Gifts from the Garden" adult class, "Impressive Pressed Flowers", provides old and new methods of pressing flowers. Held at the Kansas Wetlands Education Center, July 16, from 2 to 4 p.m., the class is offered at no charge.

A White-winged dove nested in our tree in the front yard. I watched them build the nest, lay some eggs, and hatch one fledgling. I went out on the front deck after the rainstorm, and the baby was on the ground in the drive way. It had beautiful markings, bright eyes, and could NOT fly. I didn't see either parent. I took it over into the flower bed by the deck where there was ground cover and lilies and shrubs to give it some cover, and set it down. Mom found the baby quickly and fed it generously. Later ...

City to study management, pay at police department

Following an exhausting string of executive sessions totaling 2 hours and 45 minutes to discuss "personnel issues currently facing the city" Thursday night, the Great Bend City Council emerged and voted to proceed with hiring a law firm to conduct a management and compensation study of the Police Department.

Ellinwood’s Wolf Pond under toxic algae warning

ELLINWOOD – The Kansas Department of Health and Environment, in conjunction with the Kansas Department of Wildlife Parks and Tourism, has issued a public health warning for eight lakes, including Wolf Pond in Ellinwood, and a watch for two lakes due to harmful toxic algae blooms.

With scores of massive white wind turbine components as a backdrop, officials cut the ceremonial ribbon for the Great Bend transload facility Thrusday afternoon. The site, located in the Great Bend Industrial park west of town, has been in use for a couple months now, but this just marked its grand opening.
