The importance of leadership

Frustration over bills that seemingly target western and rural Kansas unfairly was evident from some of the questions asked by attendees at the Hoisington Legislative Coffee Saturday. Hoisington School Board President Dean Stoskopf. and Superintendent Bill Lowry were vocal on a bill that would limit a district's ability to raise funds for capital improvements and one that sought to consolidate small school districts, as well as the ongoing legal battles to define the Gannon decision on school funding. Perfect Pancakes

Cool weather puts people in the mood for hot pancakes, Albert Volunteer Fire Chief Charles Keller said. He's a man who knows what he's talking about. Hundreds turned out Saturday evening for the annual Albert Volunteer Firefighters Pancake Feed and Raffle. Each year for 27 years, the town of about 175 population located in southwest Barton County swells to over 600 as people from the surrounding area come for all-you-can-eat pancakes, scrambled eggs and sausage and the chance to win their share of $100s in prizes donated by area businesses and individuals.

Chamber Coffee

This week's Chamber of Commerce Coffee will be hosted by Central Kansas Whitetails, 656 W Barton County Road (4.5 Miles west of 10th and Patton), at 9:30 a.m., Thursday. Host will be Gaila Nielsen with greeters Jake Deutsch and Staci Bownes. Coffee, refreshments and door prizes will be available.

Senior companion is recognized for serving elderly

Jackie Pritchard of Hoisington was honored for her community service at the Senior Companion Program In-service meeting held on March 16, in Great Bend. Pritchard has served individuals in Hoisington and Great Bend as a Senior Companion for ten years.

Literacy kits

In April 2015, Great Bend High School Students were able to raise money to give to a charity of their choice. GBHS decided to donate the check to United Way of Central Kansas. This money was used as seed money for literacy kits.

Great Bend library makes end of fines official

As of March 1, the Great Bend Public Library no longer charges fines or late fees for overdue materials. The GBPL Board approved the practice earlier this year, but approved it again Monday after Library Director Harry Willems provided a written policy.

Barton County getting healthier

Barton County rose to the 73rd spot in the 2016 county health rankings released last week by the Robert Woods Johnson Foundation. This is a jump from 2015 when it fell in at 86th.

New rankings shed light on where kansas counties could improve health

Johnson County ranks healthiest in Kansas and Wyandotte County is the least healthy county in the state, according to the seventh annual County Health Rankings, released last week by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute. Huelskamp staff to host tax concerns office hours in Great Bend March 22

Congressman Tim Huelskamp announced that a staff representative specializing in IRS casework from his Hutchinson office will be available in Great Bend from 11 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, March 22, at Front Door Community Center. During these office hours, Huelskamp's staff representative will be available to meet individually with taxpayers to learn about their concerns and to serve as a resource for constituents struggling to navigate bureaucratic red tape. Constituents seeking assistance are encouraged to schedule an appointment by contacting Congressman Huelskamp's Hutchinson office at 620-665-6138.
