BCC offers workshop for health pros

Barton Community College will offer health-care professionals a chance learn valuable skills from industry leaders that will help them in their day to day jobs, as well as fulfill continued education requirements, at the 21st annual Clara Barton Colloquium from 7:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28, at the Club at StoneRidge, 1438 24th St., Great Bend.

​Man in hospital following altercation at residence

A 34-year-old man was hospitalized Wednesday after being battered at a Great Bend residence. Keeven Hendricks was listed in fair condition Thursday at Via Christi Health's St. Francis Hospital in Wichita.

Zoo News:

Brit Spaugh Zoo Director Scott Gregory will head to Arizona today, where he and other Great Bend officials will meet with the board of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. On Saturday afternoon, they'll learn if the zoo has gained the AZA accreditation it has been working toward.

Convention Center and Airfest on council agenda Tuesday night

Due to Labor Day, the Great Bend City Council will meet at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the City Office instead of the normal Monday. The agenda will include selecting an architect for the Great Bend Convention Center project, the Airfest, improvements at 24th and Main, and curb and gutter replacements. There will also be an executive session.

Perky pets

This photo of "Ms. T," (on tractor) submitted by Linda Seibert, won first place in the Great Bend Recreation Commission's first "My Cute Pet Contest." Seibert received a free portrait session along with a free 8 by 10 photo donated by Riggs Photography & Camera Shop. The second place winner was "Ginger," submitted by Pam and Marcus Boger. They wil receive a $25 gift card donated by the Great Bend Orscheln Farm & Home Store. Program Coordinator Garet Fitzpatrick said the GBRC plans to make the contest an annual event.

​Ellsworth firm is new Kinze Manufacturing distributor

WILLIAMSBURG, Iowa – Farm equipment company Kinze Manufacturing has added a new dealer to its distribution network. Kan Equipment Inc. is the new Kinze dealer in Kansas with two locations in Ellsworth and Herington, officials at the Iowa-based company announced Thursday.

Audit topic of council committee meeting

The Great Bend City Council's Administration Committee will meet at 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Great Bend City Office to discuss the city's 2011 audit. Council members Ken Roberts, Dale Westoff and Nels Lindberg will meet with representatives of Adams, Brown, Beran and Ball to go over the report.

Members of the Golden Belt Community Concert Association travelled to Nashville, Tenn. August 2-4 for the 10th annual Live On Stage Conference, where they heard from several artists vying for a spot on the 2013-2014 concert season.

School zone lights adjusted

At the request of the Riley Elementary School principal, there has been an adjustment to the flashing school zone lights on 10th Street, the Great Bend Street Department reported. Due to the number of students arriving for breakfast the lights turn on at 7 a.m. After Labor Day, Riley students will begin an after school program so we will add a third time of day for the lights to activate. That time will be 4:05 p.m. on and 4:30 p.m. off.

Commission to discuss Villa South, burn ban

When the Barton County Commission meets at 9 a.m. Monday at the Barton County Courthouse, it will discuss opening streets in the Villa South addition and reconsider a county-wide burn ban. Other items on the agenda include board appointments and state health insurance.

GBHS Speech Team places 4th

At the Medicine Lodge Speech Tournament on Feb. 12, the Great Bend High School Speech Team qualified three more events to state. Becca Kay qualified to state in Original Oration by placing 2nd in the event. Hadley Murphy qualified in both Original Oration and Serious Solo Acting by placing 1st in both of the events. Sara Allen placed 6th in Original Oration and Becca Kay placed 5th Serious Solo Acting. "The team only brought four students and still placed 4th overall in sweepstakes out of 13 schools which is very impressive." stated GBHS speech coach Barbara Watson.

​Seventh-day Adventist School taking frozen berry orders

The Great Bend Seventh-day Adventist Elementary School is placing the spring order for frozen fruit from the Bithell Farms in Oregon. Place orders by Feb. 25 and the fruit will arrive in late March or early April. Available are Marion blackberries, red raspberries, boysenberries, blueberries, strawberries which are sliced and sugared, strawberries whole without sugar, loganberries, red pie cherries, dark sweet cherries, peaches, apricots, apples and red rhubarb. Also available are freezer jam and purees.

Check It Out!

Ellinwood High School was the place to be this past Sunday! Many people came out to enjoy dinner sponsored by the EHS band, and then ventured on over to the library to see the Smithsonian Exhibit. Dr. Michael Zogry, from Kansas University was our featured speaker. His topic was "Faith and Basketball", and he discussed Dr. James Naismith's connection with basketball and religion.
