HOISINGTON - Habitat for Humanity: Barton County Area began work on the property located at 322 E. 6th Street. Work days are being scheduled for the following dates: Aug 13, 20, 27, Sept. 3, 10. The organization was granted two lots in the city of Hoisington to help alleviate a shortage of housing that has concerned the community for several years. Through mostly volunteer efforts and donations, the group is able to provide people a hand up, rather than a hand out when it comes to becoming homeowners. The local group was organized in 2001. BCC Trustees hold line on tax rate

Barton Community College's Board of Trustees approved the college's 2016-2017 budget Tuesday after inviting comments or questions from the public. Hearing none, the budget was adopted. Based on valuation numbers provided by the county on June 21, it is estimated that the mill levy will be the same as the actual rate in 2014-2015, which was 33.124 mills. In 2015-2016 the rate was similar at 33.090.

Drugs and money found in standoff

A standoff between area law enforcement officers and an armed man ended peacefully Monday evening, Barton County Sheriff Brian Bellendir said. Robert Scheuerman, 35, of Larned, is in custody.

STANDOFF ENDS IN ARREST

BARTON COUNTY - Barton County Sheriff's Office deputies stopped a vehicle at about 6:20 p.m. on SE 20 Road, about one and a half miles south of Great Bend. They believed a wanted suspect was in the vehicle, which turned out to be true. Robert Scheuerman, age 35, Larned, had a handgun and refused to surrender to officers, threatening to harm himself.

Sheriff’s Office involved in standoff

BARTON COUNTY – The Barton County Sheriff's Office is in the midst of negotiations with an armed man south of Great Bend in hopes of convincing him to surrender, Sheriff Brian Bellendir said Monday night. As of 7:50 p.m. Monday, the talks were still on going.

Girl's leg slips into water meter hole

A girl approximately 4 years old was taken to Urgent Care at Great Bend Regional Hospital on Monday after stepping into a water meter hole on 10th Street around 1:40 p.m. Her leg was X-rayed but she did not appear to have serious injuries, according to reports.

Exhibit designer joins SFTC staff

LARNED - The Santa Fe Trail Center Museum has hired Richard Lartz for a limited term position as the exhibit designer for the East Gallery renovation. Museum director Becca Hiller said it is expected to take 12-18 months to complete the work.
