MADV 5th Annual Benefit Meal

MADV, Ministries Against Domestic Violence is an organization formed to provide awareness about issues surrounding domestic violence and services, such as providing a meal a month to the victim support group, raising money for the victim or raising funds from donations. This year the meal will be from 5:30 - 7 p.m. on Jan. 30, at St Rose Auditorium. They will have Chicken and Sausage Gumbo or a Walking Taco. Plus a cinnamon roll and a veggie pack along with a drink. ​Ice from passing vehicle smashes windshield; injures teen

The Barton County Sheriff's Office had a busy holiday weekend due to bad weather and poor road conditions in central Kansas, Sheriff Brian Bellendir said Monday. Deputies responded an injury accident and several non- injury accidents. There were also 15 to 20 reports of vehicles that simply slid off the roadway.

Zoo expected to reopen Tuesday

The Great Bend Brit Spaugh Zoo has been closed since ice coated the sidewalks last Thursday. According to Scott Keeler, director of public lands, employees have been working to clear ice from the sidewalks so they will be safe for visitors. The zoo is expected to reopen Tuesday. Regular hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and admission is free.

‘Santas Around The World’ Exhibit Now Open Through December 20

Twenty-three life sized Santas, representing countries and regions from around the world, appear in a winter wonderland of lighted trees and festive holiday décor in downtown Great Bend. The exhibit, known as "Santas Around the World," is now open to the public at 1223 Main Street.

Kansas Reads to Preschoolers event

Kansas Reads to Preschoolers is an annual event promoting reading to children under the age of five. Parents, librarians, and caregivers are encouraged to read the chosen title during November. Where Have all the Ducks Gone?

We are in a duck vortex right now. There are essentially NO ducks in the Bottoms. We had a nice teal season and early duck season. I never cease to be amazed at the number of "out of state" tags and the volume and quality of gear, boats, dogs and vehicles these dedicated duck hunters bring to our marsh. Many times I see more tags from states other than Kansas. I attribute that to the wisdom of our local sportsmen who know when the resident ducks have become educated or gone south. Holiday parade cancelled

While Santa and his reindeer would have no problem getting around Great Bend on Saturday, city officials opted to err on the side of caution in consideration of those navigating the streets without the help of magic this weekend. Great Bend was included in a winter weather advisory issued by the National Weather Service, warning of increased ice accumulations and slick roads, as well as increased ice accumulations on trees and power lines.
