Dance Bash

Hoisington City Council approves bid for west side lift station project

Once again, the Hoisington City County delved into city policy work Monday night at a regular meeting at the city offices. The result - more city employees will now be able to take time off for vacations and sick-leave without the worry of a smaller paycheck upon their return.

The Barton County Landfill will hold its next household hazardous waste collection date from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Solid Waste Director Phil Hathcock said.

2015 Kansas Fairs & Festivals Association Ag Challenge of Champions

Leah Parsons and Cody Wondra were named the winners of the 2015 Kansas Fairs & Festivals Association Ag Challenge of Champions. Parsons and Wondra will receive a $2,250 scholarship to be used for their college tuition. The scholarship is awarded to the top two winners of the contest that is held in conjunction with the Kansas State Fair. Contestants have to identify cuts of meat, grains, grasses and weeds, feed and livestock breeds, veterinarian equipment, four written exams on farm management as well as give a 3 minute extemporaneous speech.

Chamber Coffee

This week's Chamber of Commerce Coffee will be hosted by Sunflower Diversified Services, 8823 4th Street (plant location near airport), at 9:30 a.m., Thursday. Host will be Scott Donovan with greeters Connie Oetken and Brian Ewing. Coffee, refreshments and door prizes will be available.

School board approves Neighborhood Revitalization Grant

Ellinwood City Manager Bud Newberry addressed the USD 355 Board of Education Monday night at their regular meeting, explaining the proposed neighborhood revitalization plan. He provided details of how taxpayers are provided tax rebates over the course of five to eight years, depending on the location of their project, in an effort to incentivize improvements that will lead to significant increases in valuation of property in the district.

Shooting victim identified

The Great Bend Police Department has released the name of the man who was fatally shot last Friday at 2402 Williams St. He has been identified as Jeremy Saldana, 39, of San Angelo, Texas.

Plan B: City of Ellinwood to resume Main Street demolition

Don McMican, Engineer with DGM Consultants, P.A., provided the City of Ellinwood with his report on his visit to their property located at 102 N. Main Street, and his subsequent recommendation of how to proceed with the demolition of the building in a way that puts the neighboring building, 104 N. Main, owned by Mark and Cassie Batchman at the least amount of risk.
