​Library classes explain online card catalog

The Great Bend Public Library is offering free sessions on how to use Pathfinder, GBPL's online catalog. Library spokseperson Jennifer King said this is the perfect opportunity for the public to get comfortable with the library's system as they prepare to operate from a smaller site for a few months. The library will offer multiple public sessions and there is no need to register in advance.

Imagination Playground open Wednesday

The Imagination Playground will be set up on Wednesday, January 7th, inside the Great Bend Activity Center located at 2715 18th, from 9:30 – 11:00 a.m. This free drop in activity is recommended for children ages 2 and older. 2014 has been a busy year at the library! Starting with the beginning of the year in January, the Kansas Photography Exhibit was held. In February, ESCL was honored as one of four runner-up finalists for the 2013 AWE, Inc. Literacy Success Awards. March was a busy month with a visit from author, Cynthia Kadohata, Chamber Coffee, and the popular Quilt Show. In April, the library hosted a Student Art Show and a special event featuring Wyatt Townley, Poet Laureate of Kansas. Veterans Service Representative visit

A Veterans Service representative from the Kansas Commission on Veterans' Affairs will be at the Great Bend Kansas Works Center at 1025 Main Street from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 8, to assist veterans and their families in applying for VA benefits. Two-step classes offered

Two-step dance lessons will be offered from 7-9 p.m. Tuesdays, Jan. 6-27, at the Great Bend Activity Center. All participants must have a partner for this class. Lessons are open to anyone 18 and older. The entry fee is $11 per person.

The Great Bend City Council will meet at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the City Office, 1209 Williams. The agenda includes a report from Great Bend Chamber of Commerce President Jan Peters, a letter of support for a SeaPort Airlines ticketing and baggage agreement and an a consultant agreement for FAA airport grants regarding a building a fire truck at Great Bend Municipal Airport.

Commission to hold Monday morning meeting

The Barton County Commission will meet at 9 a.m. Monday at the Barton County Courthouse, 1400 Main in Great Bend. The agenda includes 2015 insurance rates, the Health Department's Gold Level Breastfeeding Employees Support Award from the Kansas Breastfeeding Coalition and a renewal of membership for the Kansas Association of Counties.

Survey to begin on U.S. 281 in Barton County

Starting around Monday, Jan. 5, and continuing for three weeks, the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) will have a field survey team surveying a section of US-281 Highway in Barton County. The survey area will include the section of US-281 highway 4,000 feet east and west of the US-281 bridge over a drainage tributary of Blood Creek, located 2.9 miles northwest of the east US-281 junction with K-4 highway. The purpose of the survey is to gather information necessary to create detailed designs for future highway improvements.

Items sought for museum sports exhibit

Coronado Quivira Museum is seeking items for its next exhibit, Hometown Teams in Rice County, which is scheduled to open Feb. 8th. Balls, uniforms, trophies, banners, mascots, stories of rival teams, royalty dresses or suits, and sponsorship advertisements of games are needed. The sports which will be featured include football, baseball, basketball, swimming, volleyball and any other sport which generates enthusiasm among local residents. Since sports royalty will be included, photographs of past and current queens, princesses, and kings are especially needed. All loans will be returned at the close of the exhibit.
