The Barton County Commission will meet at 9 a.m. Monday at the Barton County Courthouse, 1400 Main in Great Bend. The agenda includes a proclamation recognizing pregnancy and infant loss awareness, a Union Township Board appointment, Special Alcohol Funding distribution and an update on the county employee handbook.
The two-story brick building at the heart of Faith Community Church compound was originally built for the county poor farm. Blueprints dated Oct. 15, 1929, show the official name of the structure was the Barton County Home. Mann and Company, Hutchinson, was the architect.
Faith Community Church of Great Bend will be celebrating 61 years of ministry and dedicating the new church addition at 10 a.m. this Sunday, Oct. 13. Speakers will include the Rev. Fred Kirkpatrick, founding pastor of 52 years, and Sandy Kennedy, senior pastor.
When the Rosewood Drill Team performs Saturday afternoon at Great Bend Expo III Arena during the Rosewood Rodeo, it will be a first on several fronts. It's the first time for Rosewood to feature a horse-riding drill team and it's a new experience for the riders comprising the team. It also marks the first time that a seasoned coach will showcase an equestrian team.
Chief Justice Lawton R. Nuss announced Wednesday that the Kansas Supreme Court has reappointed Judge Mike Keeley to a two-year term as Chief Judge of the 20th Judicial District, effective Jan. 1, 2014. Chief Judge Mike Keeley has served as a district judge in the district since January 1993. He presides over cases in Barton, Ellsworth, Rice, Russell and Stafford counties.

Great Bend Expo III arena will be filled with rodeo family fun in mid-October, all with no admission fee. The public can enjoy children's activities, face painting, Randy the Clown, concessions and three performances of drill-teams on horseback. It happens during the 9th Annual Rosewood Rodeo Oct. 12 at the Great Bend Expo III Arena, two miles west of 10th and Patton.
The Shafer Art Gallery, in conjunction with the Kansas Wetlands Education Center, will host an opening reception for its first ever national juried exhibit "Choreography of Cranes," from 1-3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 6. The exhibit will also feature the work of the show's juror; renowned wildlife artist Peter Eades.
Barton Community College art students Leona Kasselman and Deb Clothier will have selections of their art in the Fine Arts Building display cases from now until December. The display cases are located in the lobby of the Fine Arts building.
