The Great Bend High School debate squad traveled seven two-person teams to two different tournaments on Sept. 22 and won six medals and a sweepstakes trophy.

The Kiowa Gun Club will sponsor a shooting exhibition range day by Savage Arms, partnering with Hornady Ammunition and Nikon Sport Optics. The range day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday will feature several of Savage Arms selection of sport rifles.

Afternoon of Christian music to benefit Barton County Emergency Aid

The First Presbyterian church invites Great Bend and Barton County communities to a "Music for Mission" concert which will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 30, in the First Presbyterian Church sanctuary, 24th and Washington. A variety of instrumental and vocal musical groups representing a diverse make-up of churches located in Great Bend will join together for an afternoon of musical praise to God.

Injury accident

The Kansas Highway Patrol investigated an accident about 5:32 p.m. Wednesday at U.S. 56 and K-156. The patrol reports that a GMC 1500 pick-up operated by Tanner Cain, 20, of Beaver, Okla. had stopped at a stop sign before driving onto U.S. 56 into the path of a westbound Mack semi-tractor operated by Brian Wick, 39, of Ness City. Cain was injured and transported to Great Bend Regional Hospital. Wick was not injured. Traffic was diverted at the intersection.

BCC student does double duty on set of 'Bus Stop'

Barton Community College sophomore Drew Reisner spends his afternoons each day creating a new world inside of the Fine Arts Auditorium as a member of the stage production team for Barton Theater's fall production of William Inge's play "Bus Stop." Once he's done with that, he puts on his costume and rehearses with the rest of the cast into the evening. Oh, and he's also learning to play the guitar for the show and handling a full class load. The Hoisington native has a lot on his plate, but it's nothing he can't handle.

Council committee to discuss insurance consultant

The first meeting of the Great Bend City Council Health Insurance Independent Consultant Selection Committee will take place at 2 p.m. Monday at the City Office. The meeting is open to the public. At its Sept. 4 meeting, the council voted to study hiring a consultant to help the city in bidding its insurance coverage. It named council members Dale Westoff, Dana Dawson and Randy Myers to the committee to make a recommendation. They are joined by three city staff members.

Shank to talk about restoring family farm

Richard Shank will talk about his restoration of his family farm in Saline County when the Barton County Historical Society meets at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the museum, located just south of Great Bend's Arkansas River bridge on U.S. 281. Admission is free and open to the public.

Fabulous flippers

Erica Price with Chris Cakes flips a pancake, Thursday at the Prince of Peace Parish Center in Great Bend. The annual Sunflower Diversified Services Pancake Dinner featured the nimble Chris Cakes crew at an all-you-can eat dinner to raise funds benefitting area people with developmental disabilities. One person ate at least 15. The oldest person in attendance was 99-year-old Mildred Sherwood from Holton.

Cyclist meeting postponed

The Barton County Health Community Design Leadership Team focus group for local bicyclists planned for at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Barton County Courthouse Square has been postponed due to scheduling conflicts. A new date will be announced at a later.

Collin Raye to open Community Concert season

The Golden Belt Community Concert Association begins its 2012-13 season with the music of 1990s country hit maker Collin Raye. His concert is set for 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, at the Great Bend Municipal Auditorium, Lakin and Stone.

Sunrise Campaign, pancake feed, help people with disabilities

Two upcoming public events will kick off a local fundraising effort, with all proceeds benefiting central Kansans with developmental disabilities and delays. The Sunrise Campaign, which helps Sunflower Diversified Services' clients, has been an annual fund drive for 12 years.

Golden Belt Community Foundation will be hosting a one-day grant writing workshop March 25, at The Front Door on 1610 10th St. in Great Bend. This workshop is available to non-profit organizations in Barton, Pawnee, Stafford and Rush Counties who wish to learn more about the skills needed to successfully submit and obtain grants.
