The country unites to support finding a cure for epilepsy

On July 25, from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. the Kendrick Tinkler family will host a Lemonade for Livy stand next to Family Dollar in Great Bend. Lemonade for Livy was created by Livy's Hope, an organization whose mission is to support children with medical needs and their families. All proceeds will benefit the Epilepsy Foundation ( and their goal to find a cure for epilepsy. The intent of the campaign is to turn the country purple (the color of epilepsy awareness) by holding at least one lemonade event in each state.

Fort Larned ranger to present program on Buffalo Soldiers

A park ranger from Fort Larned National Historic Site will talk about Buffalo Soldiers who served at the fort, during a program at 7:30 p.m. Monday, July 28, in the main museum at the Barton County Historical Society. Ellen Jones will highlight Company A, US Army 10th Cavalry, one of two Black cavalry units to serve at Fort Larned from 1867-1869.

BCC Trustees ready to public budget

The Barton Community College Board of Trustees will approve next year's budget for publication at the next board meeting, set for 4 p.m. Thursday, July 24, in room F-30 of the Fine Arts Building. The board will also approve the operational budget for Fiscal Year 2015.

Stomatitis (VS) confirmed in Colorado – horse owners encouraged to be vigilant with surveillance f

Kansas Department of Agriculture Division of Animal Health officials were notified today that Colorado has become the second state in 2014 to have a confirmed case of vesicular stomatitis (VS). Four horses tested positive for the disease and have been placed under quarantine. The horses involved in these index cases have no history of travel.

Vandals blamed for oil spill

Sheriff Brian Bellendir reports vandals opened the valves on three oil lease stock tanks in rural Barton County, causing the release of approximately 188 barrels of oil. The crime occurred sometime between 1 p.m. on Friday, July 18, and 8:25 a.m. on Saturday in the 800 block of SW 10 Road. Bellendir called the vandalism a "senseless act" and said loss is expected to exceed $12,000.

Bridge inspection

Lochner Engineering Consults will perform an up-close special bridge inspection on Barton County Bridge No. 202, over the Walnut Creek on Tuesday, July 22. The bridge is located on East Barton County Road, approximately 2.9 miles East of Great Bend. Be advised this will require temporary closure of the bridge to traffic from approximately 1 to 6 p.m.

Errors made in Kans for Kids story

In the story that ran in Thursday's Great Bend Tribune about Kans for Kids Fighting Cancer Foundation receiving tax credits, there were two errors. First, Camp Aldrich was misspelled. Second, Kans for Kids was referred to as Kansas for Kids in the first paragraph. The Tribune regrets the errors.

Hahn Brothers confirmed for Supercross Shootout in Great Bend

The motocross community will convene in central Kansas on Sept. 20-21 for the 2nd Annual Hahn Brothers Supercross Shootout. Hosted by nationally recognized and professional motocross racers Wil and Tommy Hahn, the shootout provides racing opportunities for pro and amateur racers, and an electric atmosphere for spectators and racers, the Hahns said.
