Energy management pays off at USD 428

For the past 11 years, Great Bend Middle School instructor Greg Wells has been leaving sticky notes is classrooms throughout the school district. In addition to his teaching duties, Wells serves as the USD 428 energy manager, overseeing a conservation program. The notes may remind a teacher to turn off a computer or the light at the end of the day.

Tax distributions still not complete

The Barton County Commission Monday morning learned that the property tax distributions that were due out by Sept. 20 from the County Treasurer's Office have yet to me made. In addition, there are still tax abatements and refunds that have not been cleared up either.

Edible art

Mrs. Kaiser's preschool class at Roosevelt Elementary School in Hoisington wrapped up Fire Prevention Week Friday by making a themed snack. Using graham crackers, pretzels, oreo cookies and frosting, they created firetrucks. Pictured are Tinley Christians and Braylin Rossman.

Hunter Safety class

A Hunter Safety Class will be offered in Odin at the Odin Store meeting room. Classes will be held from 7 to 9:30 p.m. on Oct. 13, 1 to 5 p.m. on Oct. 17, 1 to 5 p.m. on Oct. 18, and 7 to 9:30 p.m. on Oct. 20th. Students must be at least 11 years old and attended all classes to be eligible for certification. There is no charge for the class. Big First Congressional campaign in full swing

Although the primary for the Republican nomination for the U.S. Congress is still ten months away, don't tell that to Dr. Roger Marshall of Great Bend. Marshall, who is hard at work to replace sitting U.S. Congressman Tim Huelskamp as the standard-bearer for the GOP in next year's general election, made yet another swing through north central Kansas last week, making at least nine campaign visits there since March.

Hungry Heart Soup Kitchen

The Central Kansas Dream Center (CKDC) recently received garden produce from members of the Grass Roots Environmental Advocacy Team (GREAT). CKDC operates the Hungry Heart Soup Kitchen and other faith-based social services at the old Roosevelt Junior High School building on Broadway, Great Bend. The Soup Kitchen serves lunch to about 70 persons on weekdays. CKDC also provides faith-based human services meeting immediate and long-term needs in the areas of homelessness, hunger relief, life controlling issues and education, including shelter for women and women with children. ​Search begins for future GBPL director

The Great Bend Public Library's Board of Directors will meet at 4:45 p.m. Monday in the Dane G. Hansen Media Center, on the lower level of the library. There will be a report from the search committee, as GBPL and Central Kansas Library System prepare for the retirement of Director Harry Willems in 2016.

​BCC trustees schedule Tuesday retreat

The Barton Community College Board of Trustees will hold a retreat from noon to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, in the Conference Room of the Administration Building. There will be a tour of campus facilities: Camp Aldrich Dining Hall, Fine Arts Building, Indoor Sports Training Center, Baseball Press Box, Wrestling Practice Facility & Locker Room/Offices, Child Development Center, and Welding shop & Storage.

Let's Get It Started

The Barton County Young Professionals group championed the cause of fitness Saturday by sponsoring the first YP5K and Half Marathon at Veterans Memorial Park. Twenty participants started the half marathon at 7 a.m. An hour later, 56 more runners/walkers started the 5K event.

County tax sale set for Tuesday

The annual Barton County tax sale takes place at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Conference Room of the Barton County Courthouse, 1400 Main in Great Bend. Commission Chairman Kenny Schremmer will conduct the auction.

Commission to hold Monday morning meeting

The Barton County Commission will meet at 9 a.m. Monday at the Barton County Courthouse, 1400 Main in Great Bend. The agenda includes cereal-malt beverage licence renewals and changes to the regulations dealing with the memorial parks and cemetery.
