Hoisington man arrested for aggravated kidnapping

According to the Hoisington Police Department on March 4, formal charges of aggravated kidnapping were filed on Garrett Barnett after he was arrested by the Hoisington Police Department following two separate incidents that occurred late in the evening on Feb. 29, and into the early morning hours of March 1.

USD 428 Board to look at handbooks

The Great Bend USD 428 Board of Education will meet at 5 p.m. Tuesday, March 8, at the District Education Center, 201 S. Patton Road. The board's usual meeting date was changed because of a conflict.

Huelskamp continues Town Hall tradition in Rush and Ellsworth counties

On Wednesday and Thursday, March 9 and 10, Congressman Tim Huelskamp (KS-01) will host his annual Rush and Ellsworth County Town Halls. At the Town Halls, he'll take questions from Kansans and listen to their thoughts and concerns so he can bring them back to Washington.

Veterans Service Representative visit

A Veterans Service Representative from the Kansas Commission on Veterans' Affairs will be at the Great Bend Kansas Works Center at 1025 Main Street from 9:30 a.m. -2 p.m. on March 10, to assist veterans and their families in applying for VA benefits. Vietnam veterans are encouraged to inquire and see if their health condition is linked to agent orange. The Kansas Commission on Veterans' Affairs is a state agency that provides free assistance to veterans and their families with veterans' benefits. Call 785-625-8532 for more information.

KWEC’s Turtle Tot Club starts in March

Turtle Tot Club, a series of nature-based programs developed for preschool-age children, ages 3 to 5, is scheduled for March at the Kansas Wetlands Education Center. The one-hour programs, offered at no charge, introduce young children to the natural world around them with sensory experiences, while reinforcing colors, shapes, math and fine motor skills. When possible, sessions include outdoor time.

Fundraiser for Claflin Lions Club

Claflin Lions Club members will be selling tickets for their Annual Seafood Buffet now through March 18th. Tickets can be purchased from now through Friday morning, March 18, at Pistol Pete's Nuts and Bolts Co. in Great Bend, or from any Claflin Lions Club member. The event will take place from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. on March 18, at the Claflin Catholic Church Parish Hall. Barton County GOP hears from Cruz, Kasich supporters

The Crest Theater's main floor seating was filling up Saturday and volunteers were considering opening the balcony as the Barton County Republican Caucus got underway. Several registered voters were ready to drop their ballots in the box and leave by 10 a.m., but County Chairman Richard Friedeman asked them wait until the end of a short party meeting.

Democrats ‘Feel the Bern’

Democrats came from as far away as Scott City to vote Saturday in the party caucus at the Hoisington Activity Center. In the final tally, there were 130 votes for Bernie Sanders and 67 for Hillary Clinton. Southwest Kansas will now send three delegates to vote for Sanders and one to vote for Clinton at the National Convention.
