Wanted fugitive captured

The Barton County Sheriff deputies arrested Eliseo Velasco Jr. age 28 of Great Bend at 8 p.m. on Friday, April 7. Velasco was a wanted fugitive for outstanding warrants.

Barton Community College to close for Easter break

Barton Community College will be closed on Friday, April 14 and Monday, April 17 for Easter break. Barton's Center for Adult Education and Shafer Art Gallery will also be closed. The college's regular class schedule and office hours will resume Tuesday, April 18.

Roofing bid on school board agenda

The Great Bend USD 428 Board of Education will approve a bid for roofing at Great Bend High School when it meets at 5 p.m. Monday, April 10, at the District Education Center, 201 S. Patton Road. Other items on the agenda include recognition of the district's Teacher of the Year candidate; recognition of GBHS Future Business Leaders of America who earned awards at state competition; first reading of 2017-2018 handbooks for teachers and students, and approval of a bid for asbestos abatement and HVAC at the Field House.

The Passion & the Resurrection

Hoisington artist Mary "Monne'" Nicholson's Easter-themed paintings are on display at the Great Bend Public Library. Nicholson said the works are from two exhibits, "The Passion of Christ" and "He is Risen." The paintings will be up until April 17.

Stunt skater flips over GBMS principal

It was a stunt. But it was an impressive stunt. Jaren "The Monster" Grob somehow talked Great Bend Middle School Principal David Reiser into taking one for the team. The inline skater flew upside down over Reiser and literally gave him a high to the delight of a gym full of middle-school students.
