Free cancer screening during June Jaunt

Great Bend Masons will host a free cancer screening on Saturday, June 3, during June Jaunt. Held from 9 a.m. to noon at Barton County Health Department, 1300 Kansas Ave., the screening is open to the public. It is one of 28 free cancer prevention events the Kansas Masonic Foundation is sponsoring across the state in 2017.

GB Rotarians hold recognition luncheon

Great Bend High School Junior Rotarians and their parents attended the 2017 Junior Rotarian Recognition Luncheon held on May 1, at Stoneridge Country Club. The 16 Junior Rotarians are seniors at GBHS and each of them attended the weekly Rotary club meetings for one month of the school year.

Kansas Lions celebrate 100 years at state convention

WICHITA - Kansas Lions attending the annual Lions State Convention will celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Lions Clubs International by hosting International Director Lewis Quinn and his wife Gayle of Anchorage, Alaska, on June 1-3, at the Doubletree by Hilton in west Wichita.

Garden Club learns about healing flowers

As members of the Great Bend Garden Club met for their April meeting, they encouraged those in the community who wish to have loved ones' names engraved on the memorial plaques in the Cemetery Rose Garden before Memorial Day to get their requests to Garden Club member Delores Grose soon. Cost is $25 dollars for a single name and $40 for married couple. Call 620-792-4466.

Great Bend Noon Lions Club replacing damaged trees on Broadway.

For over 60 years the Great Bend Noon Lions Club has been taking care of the center divide of redbud trees along Broadway Avenue. The last winter storm in Great Bend was very harsh on trees. The Noon Lions have been evaluating the conditions of the trees on Broadway, and have found 16 of them to be damaged beyond repair. President Steve Goetz, Secretary Laverne Lessor, Project Chairman Don Halbower and other members of the club had decided to remove the damaged trees and replace them with healthy new saplings. Kansas Quilter Organization spring meeting

MANHATTAN - The spring meeting of the Kansas Quilters Organization will be held June 2-3 in Manhattan at the Four Points by Sheraton. The featured speaker is Debbie Maddy from Texas, who designs quilt patterns for her company, Calico Carriage. On June 2, she will teach a workshop on her "Labyrinth" quilt pattern and she will also present programs during the KQO general meeting on June 3.

Great Bend Rotary meeting

On April 17, Rep. Roger Marshall addressed the Great Bend Rotary club. He emphasized that, at least among the freshman representatives, collaboration and collegiality were the rule rather than the exception. The health-care bill is still being worked on, and he looks forward to good, positive results with economic and tax reform issues as well.
