Kansas Lions to converge in Mcpherson

The local McPherson and area Lions Clubs will serve as hosts as leaders from Lions Clubs all across Kansas will once again gather at the Best Western Convention Complex in McPherson, Oct. 25-27, for planning, fun and fellowship as we move forward in this new Lions Year in community service.

Annual Carve-n-Show

Golden Belt Wood Carvers will hold their annual Carve-n-Show from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 26, and noon to 4 p.m. on Oct. 27, at the Great Bend Senior Center, 2007 Kansas Street. Completed carvings will be on display along with work in process. The public is invited to

Progress Club meeting

Progress Club met for its October meeting at the home of Kathy Schugart. President Norma Ward presided and Vice President Judy Fox introduced Sally O'Connor of the Great Bend Community Theatre who presented our program. Sally gave a brief history of GBCT and its present home at the Crest. She previewed the upcooming productions and outlined ways Great Bend citizens can participate. The Crest is also available for rental for other events.

Garden Club offers Christmas memorial opportunities

The Great Bend Garden Club would like to remind the community that now is the time for arranging for names of loved ones as Christmas memorials to be added to one of the memorial plaques hanging in the Rose Garden of the Great Bend Cemetery. Memorials can be created by anyone and can be accomplished with a phone call to Delores Grose at 620-792-4466.

Barton County 4H Marksman compete at state match

This year Barton County 4-H expanded their shooting sports program to include a Small Bore Rifle project. After a long summer of weekly practice's and traveling the state to compete in several qualifying matches, four Barton county youth earned the opportunity to compete in the State of Kansas 4-H Shooting Sports Fall Match.

League of Women Voters meeting

League of Women Voters of Great Bend will hold the monthly meeting at noon on Tuesday at Montana Mike's in the north room. Lunch will be from the menu and can be from their "quick serve" menu.

Great Bend Pilot Club Names Knudson Sweetheart of the Year

Pilot International Foundation was established in 1975 to support the community-based work of Pilot Clubs by promoting the awareness and prevention of brain-related disorders, and improving the lives of those affected by such disorders, through education, volunteerism, financial support, and research. Each year, the Great Bend Pilot Club supports the efforts of Pilot International through a multitude of activities.

Great Bend City Slicers 4-h club meeting

Great Bend City Slickers 4-H club met on Sept. 12 at the Presbyterian Church. Nine members, three leaders and eight parents were present. It was announced that 4-H record books are due on Sept. 18. Election of officers will take place at the next meeting. 4-H week is Oct. 6- Oct. 12 and all members were asked to wear their 4-H t-shirts and bring friends to the next meeting. Kansas Authors Club District 6 meeting

The Kansas Authors Club invites "would be" and interested writers to attend their 61h District meeting from 1 to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 23, at the Delos Smith Center, 101 West First Street in Hutchinson. The registration fee is $5, to be paid at the meeting. This is an opportunity for writers of all kinds to come together and get acquainted and to share their abilities and ideas with one another. Refreshments will be served, and door prizes will be given.

Xeriscaping encouraged at Garden Club meeting

At a recent Great Bend Garden Club meeting, Alicia Boor, the agriculture and natural resources agent for the Barton County Extension Service, presented an informative program entitled "Gardens for our Varying Climate."
