Noon Lions give to Japan effort
The Great Bend Noon Lions Club recently donated $1,000 to earthquake/tsunami relief in Japan through the Lions Club International Foundation. The funds are part of more than $6 million LCIF has committed to the effort, including $3 million contributed by Lions in Japan.

Eagle Scout Tyler Koelsch
The Eagle Scout Court of Honor was bestowed upon Tyler John Koelsch on March 12 at the Eastridge Presbyterian Church in Lincoln, Neb. Tyler is the son of Rick Koelsch, formerly of Great Bend and the late Jane Koelsch. Grandparents are LeRoy and Jean Dringmann and June Koelsch, all of Great Bend. Tyler is a member of Boy Scouts of America Troop #2 Cornhusker Council. His scoutmaster is Scott Connors.
Barton County Historical Society to host Volunteer Orientation - April 7
The Barton County Historical Museum and Village will conduct an Orientation Meeting at 1 p.m. on April 7 at the Village south of the river bridge on Highway 281. The meeting is for anyone in Barton County who seeks information about volunteer service at the museum. This meeting will help volunteers, new or returning, to become acquainted with life at the Village and to learn more about the new happenings and the many new displays at the museum.
March Social planned for Preceptor Pi members
Preceptor Pi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met March 15 at the home of Reta Lucas. President Brenda Black led the meeting.
Barton County Historical Society
There are many 'untold stories' about Great Bend Army Air Field during its brief, but very active, existence during World War II. One of those stories involves six young women, assigned to GBAAF as WASPs or Women Airforce Service Pilots. Karen Neuforth, Research Coordinator of the Barton County Historical Society, will tell that story at the regular meeting of the Society at 7:30 p.m. Monday. Barton County 4H’ers compete in Pawnee County Air Rifle Competition
On Saturday, March 19 kids in the Barton County 4H Shooting Sports project traveled to Pawnee County to compete in the annual Pawnee County Shootout air rifle competition.

Eighteen members of the Great Bend Garden Club met on March 17 at the county extension office.
Great Bend Rotary
The Great Bend Rotary Club recently honored five new Paul Harris Fellows. They were Rotarians Ed Mauler, Devin McMillen, Dr. Patrick Stang, Dr. Tom Vernon and Rotary Spouse, Anna Burke. Rotarian Gary Burk was honored as a Multiple Paul Harris Fellow. District 5670 Governor Peter Marcus from Ness City made the presentation. BCARSP Meeting
The Barton County Association of Retired School Personnel met at 11:30 a.m. on March 11 at the Club at StoneRidge. President Rose Kelly opened the meeting with the flag salute and Becky Dudrey gave the invocation. Thirty-eight members and one guest, Alicia Westhoff, were present. New members Steve Dayton, Janice Friedeman and Marcia Berchek were introduced.

The Progress Club met on March 7. Hostess was Karen Becker. Seventeen members were present. Pat Halbower gave the program on Australia. In 1994, the Halbowers traveled to Australia, Tasmania, and New Zealand. Australia is the only continent that is also a country. It was in the 1700's that people first knew about this country. Scouts receive recognition
Several Scouts from Troop 111, sponsored by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Great Bend, received special recognition for giving service beyond what is normally expected.

BCARSP meeting
The Barton County Association of Retired School Personnel met on May 10, at Montana Mike's in Great Bend. President Sally O'Connor presided over the meeting. There were 50 members and two guests present.
Great Bend Optimist and Rotary Club luncheon
A joint luncheon recognition was recently held for the Great Bend Optimist and Rotary Clubs. Brigadier General Vic Braden, Deputy Commanding General, Army National Guard, for the United States Army Combined Arms Center, Fort Leavenworth was the speaker.
League of Women Voters meeting
League of Women Voters of Great Bend will hold the monthly meeting at noon on Tuesday, May 14, at Montana Mike's in the north room. Lunch will be from the menu and can be from their "quick serve" menu.
Prides of Kansas Lions To Wichita Convention
The annual Kansas Lions State Convention in Wichita, May 30 - June 1, 2013, will take on an international significance as the Kansas Lions host Lions Clubs International President Wayne Madden and wife Linda at the Airport Hilton Convention Center.
