Rotary Club project

Work began on Nov. 28, to build a sanitary four unit toilet in the Children's Peace Park being developed by the Rotary Club of Bushenyi, Uganda, with the digging of the trenches for the water and sewer lines. The connection between three Kansas Rotary Clubs and District 5670 in Kansas and the Rotary Club of Bushenyi, Uganda, began when Mike Mills, McPherson Rotary Club, sat with Sister (Nurse) Ephrance Nuwamanya, incoming President of the Rotary Club of Bushenyi, on a bus ride to the Convention Center at the Rotary International annual conference in Lisbon last June. Preceptor Pi celebrates Thanksgiving

Members of Preceptor Pi Chapter, Beta Sigma Phi, enjoyed an early Thanksgiving dinner on Nov. 16 at First Christian Church with their spouses as their guests. Wheatland Café of Hudson catered the traditional Thanksgiving meal.

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3111 hosts “Quilts of Valor”

"Quilts of Valor" are heirloom quilts sewn with comforting and healing hands to show their compassion for our veterans who have served our country valiantly and with great hardship to themselves but only thinking of their country and how they can best serve. Presenting the "Quilts of Valor," on Veterans Day was the local representative, Sandra Vink of Great Bend, assisted by Helen Hullman of St. John and Shannon Royer of Otis.

Progress Club meeting

Progress Club met on Nov. 4, at the home of Pat Halbower with 18 members present. Jackie Curtis introduced Skip Yowell, co-founder of JanSport who presented our program. Skip is a 1964 graduate of Great Bend High School and a GBHS Hall of Fame member. He and his partner designed sportsgear such as packs and tents for mountain climbing and camping around the world. He gave a narrative of his travels and also of his work with youth and the underpriveleged.

Kiwanis wins Friends of Scouting award

The Great Bend Kiwanis Club has been chosen for the 2013 Friends of Scouting award, presented by the Boy Scout Quivira Council Board of Directors. Bill McKown, representing the board, presented a plaque to Kiwanis Club President Becky Dudrey at the Nov. 13 Kiwanis meeting.

LWV meeting

The City of Great Bend's Community Coordinator, Christina Hayes, will provide an update on promotions being planned for the upcoming holiday season at the November meeting of the League of Women Voters. The luncheon meeting will be held over the noon hour on Nov. 12, in the north room of Montana Mike's, 906 McKinley.

City Slickers 4-H club meeting

The Great Bend City Slickers 4-H Club met on Oct. 10 at the Presbyterian Church. Thirteen members, two leaders, nine parents and three guests were present. New officers elected were: Josh Crawford-President; Caleb Maneth-Vice-president; Haley Hicks-Secretary; Parker Scheck-Treasurer;Audrey Likes-Reporter; and Stephen Crawford and Nicole Rziha-Song Leaders. Stephen Crawford gave a demonstration and Parker Scheck gave a talk.

Great Bend Saddle Club 'Silly Chili Play Day'

The Great Bend Saddle Club held its annual Silly Chili Play Day on Oct. 27 for members and the public. A costume contest for participants and/or their horses was held. Winners in the children's division were: 1st- Olivia Keller, 2nd- Justice Keller, 3rd- Samantha Ledesma. In the adult division, winners were 1st- Julie Keller, 2nd- Judy Demel, 3rd- Wanda Schroeder. Following the costume contest were trail, poles and flag relay games. Prizes for the day were donated by Great Bend Coop, Countryside Veterinary, The Boot doctor, High Call Outfitters and O'Reilly Automotive. Chili and desserts were served.

Preceptor Pi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met Oct. 1 at the home of Jeanne Schmitt. Rosie Luthi was co-hostess. Vice President Susan Coulson led the meeting in the absence of President Cindy Meitler.
