The Parnassus Club met May 10 at the Classic Inn, with seven members present for the annual Spring Luncheon. Following a very yummy and enjoyable meal, the business meeting was held. Sharon Jones reported on the Night at the Opera in Salina which was enjoyed by Nancy Converse, Betty Erickson, Chari Miller and Sharon. They enjoyed an Italian dinner at Martinelli's across the street from the Stiefel Theatre where the Opera evening was presented.
The Barton County Association of Retired School Personnel met at 11:30 a.m. on May 6 at the Club at Stone Ridge. President Rose Kelly opened the meeting with the flag salute and Becky Dudrey gave the invocation. Forty-two members and one guest, Joe Boley, were present. Birthdays for March, April and May were recognized.
Barton County Historical Society will have their monthly meeting at 7:39 p.m. on Monday. The program will be Home on the Range: Kansas Folklore presented by Jim Hoy. The program is brought to you by the Kansas Humanities Council, a non-profit organization promoting understanding of the history and ideas that shape our lives and strengthen our sense of community.
The Great Bend Garden Club held a tour of gardens for its May meeting. The tour began on the backyard patio of Bonnie Sarff where light refreshments were served by Bonnie, Teresa Bachand, and Fern Tompkins. Then nineteen members and two guests, Darlene McDorman and Linda Ludes, visited and enjoyed the spring flower gardens of Bonnie, Mary Kummer, Alice Young, Delores Baker, and Delores Grose.
Great Bend Rotary recognized this year's Junior Rotarians at a luncheon on Monday. Two students are selected each month during the school year from Great Bend High School Seniors. These students are given the opportunity to attend weekly meetings with Rotary to learn about the organization as well as the community through a variety of special presenters. Rotary also presented Louis Burley with a $500 Junior Rotarian scholarship.
Preceptor Pi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met May 10 at the home of Judy Krebaum, who also served as co-hostess. President Brenda Black led the meeting.
Janis Link, member of Preceptor Pi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi, was honored by her chapter with the Silver Circle Ceremony in April, recognizing her for 25 years of membership in Beta Sigma Phi. She will serve as president of her chapter for 2011-12.
The Kansas Lions State Convention in Lawrence, June 2-4, will take on an international flavor as the Kansas Lions play host to International President (IP) Sid and Judy Scruggs at the Lawrence Holiday Inn Convention Center.
The four Great Bend chapters of Beta Sigma Phi celebrated the international sorority's 80th anniversary with a Founder's Day event April 26 in the Plaza de Cavanaugh community room at Barton Community College.
Twenty members of the Great Bend Garden Club along with two guests, Pam Sweeney and Kay Hallenbeck, met for their April meeting at the Barton County Extension Office.
