Busy Buzzers Club news

The Busy Buzzers 4-H club decided November would be a great time to give back to the community with a service project. At their monthly November meeting, they decided to sew shirt protectors for the local care facility Almost Home. Several of club members arrived an hour early to the meeting to begin sewing. There were experienced sewers and kids who had never sewn before helping with the project. By the end of the night, around 12-14 shirt protectors had been sewn. “I Dare You” Leadership Award

The "I Dare You" Leadership award was first offered in 1941 by the late William H. Danforth, founder of the Ralston Purina Company in St. Louis. He challenged young people to achieve their highest potential and to influence others through lives of service. The award is inspired by the book, I Dare You! written by Danforth, in which he commends the balanced life of mental, physical, social and spiritual development as the backbone of leadership.

4-H Key Award winners

Of all that can be gained in 4-H work, none is more prestigious that of the Kansas 4-H Key Award. To earn the Key Award, candidates must be 16 years of age and must be enrolled in the leadership project for the past four years.

Pilot Club International Care and Kindness Week

Pilot international and local Pilot Clubs around the globe recognize the second week in November as International Care & Kindness Week, a week-long public awareness campaign meant to bring awareness to how simple acts can change a day, a life or the world by simply showing someone you care. International Care & Kindness Week encourages people to "Take time to Care and Be Kind."

Parnassus Club meeting

The Parnassus Club met at the home of Sharon Jones with eight members present. The study of the Tone Poem continued with Becky Dudrey giving the program on Richard Strauss' composition 'Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks' Composed in 1895. 'Till Eulenspiegel' chronicles the misadventures and pranks of this German peasant. In this composition, Richard Strauss, uses the horn and the D flat Clarinet to bring to mind the folly of this prankster, Till.

Preceptor Pi makes plans for service projects, chapter socials

Preceptor Pi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi began its 2014-15 year in September with new plans for community service, and social and cultural activities. Members welcomed back Brenda Black, who has rejoined the chapter after returning to Great Bend from Topeka.

The Progress Club met on Nov. 3, at the home of Pat Halbower, with Jackie Curtis and Maxie Hinkson as co-hostesses. Sixteen members attended.

CKARSP meeting

The Central Kansas Association of Retired School Personnel met on March 13, at Montana Mike's in Great Bend. President Sally O'Connor presided over the meeting. There were 41 members present, along with Vermeene Forsberg, KARSP District IV Director.

Kansas Authors Club District 6 meeting

The Kansas Authors Club invites "would be" and interested writers to attend their 61h District meeting from 1 to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 23, at the Delos Smith Center, 101 West First Street in Hutchinson. The registration fee is $5, to be paid at the meeting. This is an opportunity for writers of all kinds to come together and get acquainted and to share their abilities and ideas with one another. Refreshments will be served, and door prizes will be given.

Xeriscaping encouraged at Garden Club meeting

At a recent Great Bend Garden Club meeting, Alicia Boor, the agriculture and natural resources agent for the Barton County Extension Service, presented an informative program entitled "Gardens for our Varying Climate." Armed with data from Kansas State University's Agricultural Research and Extension Services, Boor first described the serious lack of water facing many parts of the state and what is currently being done to help prevent the very probable water crisis that faces the whole state in the future. Parnassus Club auditions

The annual Parnassus piano and voice auditions were held in the Moses Chapel at Barton County College on March 7th. Tiffany Harms of Central Christian College, McPherson, was adjudicator for both piano and voice. Piano teachers entering students were: Darlene Boley, Becky Dudrey, Karole Erikson, Debbie Lebbin, Marlene Regehr, and Lorrie Stickney. Voice students were entered by Betty Erikson and Glenna Gaunt.

Barton County 4-H travels to Ellis County Air Rifle Match

On Saturday 10 4H'ers from Barton County traveled to Hays to compete in the Ellis County 4H Air Rifle Match. Not only was the weather very good but so were their results.

Ladies Auxiliary VFW

The Ladies Auxiliary VFW is one of the nation's oldest veterans' service organizations and members are the relatives of those who have served in overseas combat. There are 475,000 members representing all 50 states, the District of Columbia and several foreign-based Auxiliaries who volunteer millions of hours and give millions of dollars to support veterans, military personnel, and their families.
