What does it take to be named a "Friend of 4-H"? There are many people who share their time and talent with the 4-H program. This year the Barton County 4-H Council voted to recognize a couple and a family who have gone above and beyond what is asked of them. A true friend of 4-H is involved through the thick and thin and doesn't quit until the job is done. The 2013 Friends of 4-H are Brad and Phyllis Brack, George and Phyllis Miller and Kelly and Fawnia Miller.
Attracted by the autumn displays of chrysanthemums seen in the yards and flower gardens around town, Jeannine Girton chose these colorful flowers as her program topic for the November Garden Club meeting.
Work began on Nov. 28, to build a sanitary four unit toilet in the Children's Peace Park being developed by the Rotary Club of Bushenyi, Uganda, with the digging of the trenches for the water and sewer lines. Members of Preceptor Pi Chapter, Beta Sigma Phi, enjoyed an early Thanksgiving dinner on Nov. 16 at First Christian Church with their spouses as their guests. Wheatland Café of Hudson catered the traditional Thanksgiving meal.
"Quilts of Valor" are heirloom quilts sewn with comforting and healing hands to show their compassion for our veterans who have served our country valiantly and with great hardship to themselves but only thinking of their country and how they can best serve. Presenting the "Quilts of Valor," on Veterans Day was the local representative, Sandra Vink of Great Bend, assisted by Helen Hullman of St. John and Shannon Royer of Otis.
Progress Club met on Nov. 4, at the home of Pat Halbower with 18 members present. Jackie Curtis introduced Skip Yowell, co-founder of JanSport who presented our program. Skip is a 1964 graduate of Great Bend High School and a GBHS Hall of Fame member. He and his partner designed sportsgear such as packs and tents for mountain climbing and camping around the world. He gave a narrative of his travels and also of his work with youth and the underpriveleged.
The Great Bend Kiwanis Club has been chosen for the 2013 Friends of Scouting award, presented by the Boy Scout Quivira Council Board of Directors. Bill McKown, representing the board, presented a plaque to Kiwanis Club President Becky Dudrey at the Nov. 13 Kiwanis meeting.
