A joint luncheon recognition was recently held for the Great Bend Optimist and Rotary Clubs. Brigadier General Vic Braden, Deputy Commanding General, Army National Guard, for the United States Army Combined Arms Center, Fort Leavenworth was the speaker.
League of Women Voters of Great Bend will hold the monthly meeting at noon on Tuesday, May 14, at Montana Mike's in the north room. Lunch will be from the menu and can be from their "quick serve" menu.

The Desk and Derrick Club of Barton County recently donated $100 to the Great Bend Military Moms, to help with the costs of sending care packages to deployed military personnel. The Great Bend Military Moms have sent more than 4,300 care packages, to those serving so far away from home, and are getting ready for the next shipment. If you know of anyone currently deployed, get their military address to Leslie Barrett, 620-792-2838, as soon as possible. They all deserve to know they are appreciated.
The four Great Bend chapters of Beta Sigma Phi celebrated Founder's Day April 25 with an evening dinner program in the Cavanaugh Room located at Barton Community College's Learning Resource Center.

The Kansas Authors Club invites "would be" and interested writers to attend their 61h District meeting from 1 to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 23, at the Delos Smith Center, 101 West First Street in Hutchinson. The registration fee is $5, to be paid at the meeting. This is an opportunity for writers of all kinds to come together and get acquainted and to share their abilities and ideas with one another. Refreshments will be served, and door prizes will be given.
This is the 20th Anniversary for Brain Awareness Week (BAW), which is a global campaign to increase public awareness of the progress and benefits of brain research. Every March, BAW unites the efforts of partner organizations worldwide in a celebration of the brain for people of all ages.
At a recent Great Bend Garden Club meeting, Alicia Boor, the agriculture and natural resources agent for the Barton County Extension Service, presented an informative program entitled "Gardens for our Varying Climate." The annual Parnassus piano and voice auditions were held in the Moses Chapel at Barton County College on March 7th. Tiffany Harms of Central Christian College, McPherson, was adjudicator for both piano and voice. Piano teachers entering students were: Darlene Boley, Becky Dudrey, Karole Erikson, Debbie Lebbin, Marlene Regehr, and Lorrie Stickney. Voice students were entered by Betty Erikson and Glenna Gaunt.
On Saturday 10 4H'ers from Barton County traveled to Hays to compete in the Ellis County 4H Air Rifle Match. Not only was the weather very good but so were their results.
The Ladies Auxiliary VFW is one of the nation's oldest veterans' service organizations and members are the relatives of those who have served in overseas combat. There are 475,000 members representing all 50 states, the District of Columbia and several foreign-based Auxiliaries who volunteer millions of hours and give millions of dollars to support veterans, military personnel, and their families.
