The Food for Thought Book Club will meet at at 12 p.m. on Jan. 8 at the Great Bend Public Library. This month the club is reading books about "History". Any book that fits into the theme works whether its a nonfiction book recounting a historical event or a piece of historical fiction. This book club is open to anyone who wishes to participate. The South Bend Jolly Workers 4-H Club met on Dec. 8, at the Walnut Bowl for their December meeting and Christmas party. After their regular business meeting, they wrapped gifts that the club purchased for a family from the Angel Tree. After wrapping gfifts, they had a gift exchange and enjoyed a game of bowling. Their next meeting is scheduled for Jan. 12th.
Tristan Mitchell was recently awarded the prestigious Eagle Scout award at a Boy Scout Troop 184 Eagle Court of Honor. The Eagle Scout award is the highest youth honor in scouting. Mitchell's Eagle service project consisted of refurbishing and painting the playground equipment, added a second wheelchair swing, put up 37' of chain link fence and built two soccer goals, at Eisenhower Grade School. He spent 127 hours on this project.
Progress Club met on Dec, 2, at the home of Judy Fox with Becky Dudrey and Sharon Jones as co-hostesses. There were 17 members in attendance. The meeting was opened with the Our Father, minutes read and approved and a treasurer's report given. Members presented their donations to Military Moms. Judy Fox then presented her program on "Precious Moments." She started her collection in the late 1980's and only buys pieces with meaning to her.
What does it take to be named a "Friend of 4-H"? There are many people who share their time and talent with the 4-H program. This year the Barton County 4-H Council voted to recognize a couple and a family who have gone above and beyond what is asked of them. A true friend of 4-H is involved through the thick and thin and doesn't quit until the job is done. The 2013 Friends of 4-H are Brad and Phyllis Brack, George and Phyllis Miller and Kelly and Fawnia Miller.
Attracted by the autumn displays of chrysanthemums seen in the yards and flower gardens around town, Jeannine Girton chose these colorful flowers as her program topic for the November Garden Club meeting.
Work began on Nov. 28, to build a sanitary four unit toilet in the Children's Peace Park being developed by the Rotary Club of Bushenyi, Uganda, with the digging of the trenches for the water and sewer lines. The connection between three Kansas Rotary Clubs and District 5670 in Kansas and the Rotary Club of Bushenyi, Uganda, began when Mike Mills, McPherson Rotary Club, sat with Sister (Nurse) Ephrance Nuwamanya, incoming President of the Rotary Club of Bushenyi, on a bus ride to the Convention Center at the Rotary International annual conference in Lisbon last June. The Great Bend Evening Lions Club presented the Melvin Jones Fellowship award to Elward (Eldy) Hiss for his 42 years of humanitarian service to the highest degree. Eldy has shown stalwart dedication in his quest to help others through his time spent with the Great Bend Evening Lions Club. He said that while Lions help people in need all around the world, it is his friendship with Club members and the many services they provide locally that means the most to him.
