The Barton County Association of Retired School Personnel met on March 8 at Montana Mike's in Great Bend. President Sally O'Connor presided over the meeting. There were 35 members and three guests present.

On March 9, Barton County 4H members in the 4H air rifle project traveled to Larned to compete in the Pawnee County 4H Shootout. There were 36 shooters representing seven counties from across Kansas.
The Daughters of Isabella will meet at 7 p.m. on Monday at the St. Patrick Parish Center. Hostesses are Grace Anderson and Rose Younger. Members are asked to bring feminine items and/or non-perishable food items for the Barton County Food Bank. On March 2, the kid's in the Barton County 4H air rifle project traveled to Hays to compete in the Ellis County Air Rifle Match. There were 60 competitors from 15 counties entered in the air rifle match including the Barton County kid's.
Great Bend High School senior, Nathan Brungardt, has attained Eagle Scout, the highest Boy Scout advancement. He joined Cub Scout Pack #157 in 2001 and in 2007 crossed over to Boy Scout Troop #157, led by Steve Divis. His Eagle Scout project consisted of converting an old mule barn at the Great Bend Zoo into an enclosed housing for the owls. All materials for his project were recycled or donated.
Great Bend City Slicers 4-H Club met on Feb. 17 at the Pizza Hut. There were eight members, eight parents are four guests present. Members were reminded of 4-H Days on March 2. The next meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. on March 14 at the old 4-H building.

On Feb. 16th Barton County 4H hosted the Barton County Winter Classic Air Rifle match at the Expo grounds west of Great Bend.

The "I Dare You" Leadership award was first offered in 1941 by the late William H. Danforth, founder of the Ralston Purina Company in St. Louis. He challenged young people to achieve their highest potential and to influence others through lives of service. The award is inspired by the book, I Dare You! written by Danforth, in which he commends the balanced life of mental, physical, social and spiritual development as the backbone of leadership.
Of all that can be gained in 4-H work, none is more prestigious that of the Kansas 4-H Key Award. To earn the Key Award, candidates must be 16 years of age and must be enrolled in the leadership project for the past four years.
Pilot international and local Pilot Clubs around the globe recognize the second week in November as International Care & Kindness Week, a week-long public awareness campaign meant to bring awareness to how simple acts can change a day, a life or the world by simply showing someone you care. International Care & Kindness Week encourages people to "Take time to Care and Be Kind."
The Parnassus Club met at the home of Sharon Jones with eight members present. The study of the Tone Poem continued with Becky Dudrey giving the program on Richard Strauss' composition 'Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks' Composed in 1895. 'Till Eulenspiegel' chronicles the misadventures and pranks of this German peasant. In this composition, Richard Strauss, uses the horn and the D flat Clarinet to bring to mind the folly of this prankster, Till.
